Since Friday, drivers across the U.S. are being locked out of their vehicles due to an outage involving ignition interlock devices from Intoxalock. There was no communication until a statement Sunday night as an update on their website. Many had court-required recalibration dates this weekend, but service centers were closed and the company's phone and system support were down. As a result, devices are now recording violations and placing vehicles into lockout status, leaving people unable to get to work or meet daily obligations. While the company says fees will be waived, many drivers are still facing lost wages, towing costs, and potential reporting issues with state monitoring authorities. This appears to be affecting customers in multiple states and may leave people without access to their vehicles for several days. Drivers are asking regulators and the media to investigate how a nationwide outage of a court-mandated device could lead to mass lockouts and violations. THIS COULD GO ON FOR DAYS. It is now Wednesday, almost a week later.

It took 4 hours to answer their emergency text line and they immediately closed it out without the chance to respond... gave seconds to answer.

They are currently adding fake 5 star reviews to TrustPilot during this crisis.

Reddit intoxalock has alot of info. Also a few public facebook groups.

Don't Do It!
January 31, 2026

I wouldn't even give this service 1 star. The device constantly drains your battery. You can't leave your vehicle in -20 degree weather to let the battery charge or they charge you a $75 lockout fee. They tell you that you can put your device in a sleep mode, but mine either didn't have a sleep mode or it did not function. Customer service is exceptionally rude and will refuse to give back your money even if it is the fault of their device. When I had my device removed, they continued charging me their extremely high fees. I did have them on the phone with the service center on the day that I canceled and they are trying to tell me they didn't cancel it and are refusing to close out my account and stop taking my money.

Whistle blowers needed
January 6, 2026

Uber, bus, walk, crawl
Use intoxalock and cry.
Try smart start! Less lies
I choose to loose my license rather than my money and my mind. This is a huge scam that in which im not sure the State dmv are aware of who they are doing business with. When people are at a low point trying to get back up is not the opportunity its to pad your pockets and in such a gangster way thats exactly what it reminded me of. As a kid i worked in a salvage yard owed buy guys who point with their pinky's.
They would charge customer tell them to pick up the part at another location an make them pay again. That's one of the scams going on with intoxalock.
****** my victim impact statement******

I called intoxalock for info. I spoke to a gentlemen named Thomas at ext# 579.
He quoted me $84 bi weekly. One time fee of $29.99 on your start day. Installation fee paid to installer &150.00.
When the time comes removal fee $75.00. $15 every sixty days for a calibration also paid to the installer.
Thomas wanted to close a deal bad. Suddenly I could now pay $34.61 again bi-weekly plus a $6.00 protection plan.
Thats was all lies. I paid Thomas $29.99 over the phone. The installer later demanded $450.00. Took my car home and have never been able to drive it since. I call every day they put me on hold for hours. The place where you get the installation is shady itself. I would have been robbed if I didn't pay what they demaded. I'd be concerned for a women or young person dealing with these people in this area of town.
High crime area
So now I pay $61.00 a month for a service that does not seemed to be supervised past the payments needed to keep this scam going.
I'm sure intoxalock is owned by a shyster who will try to burry anyone whos trying to do something about being taken advantage of. I so hope the dmv and the state can account for the actions of others. Maybe they are aware $$$.
Are the state politicians reps aware too?
So I call back spoke with Pollyanna, Calvin, Charline Mae, a very interesting sales rep named Craig. Craig is an officer of the law during his free time.
I asked Craig to speak to a manger
Nothing else first and only question Just "may I please speak with a supervisor or Manager"?
That's not happening on Craig's watch. Promote Craig make management aware they are safe with officer Craig on the job. Craig interrogated with great sales skills. Almost a deposition style he needed to know why I wanted to speak to a manager and who was I and my personal info and all of this was because i was a paying customer wanting some info from a reliable source like a manager. When you do dirty business it makes you paranoid that way. Calvin yelled at me he was angry and he hung up the phone on me mid sentence.
Craig gave me a email *******@intoxaloc.com. For some reason that email did not work when I tried it. He claimed it was to manager named Freddy. Freddy call me please asap. He could not speak with me due to he took the day off. Only one manager there. That was my first question and we are twenty mins into a debate over my reasons for asking for a manager and my phone number. Which I provided.

THE DEVICE LOCKS ITSELF OFTEN AND YOU WILL PAY INTOXALOCK $75 THEN THE REPAIR SHOP $50. PLIS A TOE TRUCK. EVERY TIME!

They will not remove your device until you have pad them enough money and they had you on hold long enough to tell you to go to the court get a document
Go to the police get another document
Go to the dmv do the same all while the fees are adding up.
This will not be less than $3-$5,000 when you're done. If that's the case say it upfront why lie. Because someone who should know don't know. But will now know. Thats why.

Unless you live in your car this is not a good idea. Not with uber. This is a money grab in the worst way
People are already down
And going through a tuff time to make it worse is evil.

This company is the worst. They do not train their employees correctly and will charge you for anything, even when it's their own mistake. I was giving birth and physically could not drive, and their employee told me, "Don't worry about it, I'll reset your calibration date to next month." I even asked if I would be locked out of my car, and they said, "No."
Surprise, surprise — I gave birth and returned to find my vehicle locked out and unable to start. When I called and explained the situation, they tried to blame me and told me I had to get it towed and pay for it myself. Their management is also trash and completely unprofessional.
Avoid this company at all costs.

Holy power surges!
July 16, 2025

The systems will cause power surges to your electrical that they won't acknowledge. Don't worry it'll ruin your car but you'll pay for inspections and service fees and for whatever the system. You would think being owned by a hedge fund they would be more helpful

If you're considering Intoxalock—DON'T. This company is a complete scam designed to drain your wallet with hidden charges, unnecessary lockouts, and a garbage device that's engineered for failure. Let me break it down: Their device is ridiculously sensitive. The smallest thing—like turning your key to the "on" position without blowing into the device—will trigger an error and lead to a service lockout. It's absurd. You'll get charged $25 every time you have to recalibrate the unit—and a 80 dollar fee from Intoxalock, which happens constantly. Sometimes for reasons you can't even control. Every lockout, every issue = $$$. Their device includes a pink wire that connects to your tachometer to determine if your car is running. BUT GUESS WHAT? Intoxalock deliberately removes the manufacturer's installation instructions so the techs don't hook this wire up properly. That means your car can just sit in accessory mode and the device will think it's running incorrectly. Boom. Another error. Another lockout. Another fee. Oh, and it gets worse in winter. In the Midwest, it's freezing, and no one tells you that you need to wrap the device in a blanket or else the cold will kill it. If the device freezes, it won't work, your car won't start, and you're stuck. Here's what happened to me: Last winter, my brand-new 2022 Toyota truck got completely drained because the Intoxalock device wouldn't let me start the car. I couldn't even turn off my headlights. Battery died. I replaced it—$275. Two weeks later, I left it parked for just three days. DEAD AGAIN. Another $275 battery. That's $550 out of pocket from a device that is supposed to help, not screw you. Add in constant recalibrations, bogus service fees, and a terrible leasing policy, and I've already spent over $1,300—My dui was from 2013 so the d. O. l only makes you do 4 months, well these dumb son of a $#*!s, did not look at my paperwork and had me set up for 180 days, and that was 13 months ago. And my lease isn't even up. DO NOT GET INTOXALOCK. They don't care about safety. They don't care about you. They care about bleeding you dry, one lockout at a time. If you're required to get an interlock device—look elsewhere. Intoxalock is a trap.

Intoxalock
April 14, 2025
Updated review

After 10 years I decided to get my interlock put in my car, I didn't have a license yet but required to have device to get it back. I chose the company my daughters husband went with! I called and they quoted one price, then immediately, I saw double of what they said on my account. They didn't say anything bout the other hidden fees at first. I didn't look at any reviews at first but when I saw my bill I looked. Damn, I should of. I wrote to customer service that I wanted to go with another company, and demanded they remove my device at the install place, and canceled my debit and credit card so they wouldn't charge me any more. I got calls soon after wards but didn't answer then one day after I did answer it was the supervisor asking what he could do to rectify the situation, keep me as a client. I said explained what happened in the beginning and said I just want to change companies. He said ok, when would you like it removed, I told him one week from our conversation and he said I will call you back after he can see if the installer has that date and time available, and I thought for sure he wouldn't. But he DID after 10 minutes and said all good to go and you have 0 balance and no other fees and we will close your account and pay for the removal! Still I was hesitant! I called the service center and they had the approval paperwork ready for me to come on that date and time, went there and sure enough, all good to go! Intoxalock paid for the removal and I just looked dumbfounded! Nobody is perfect, sometimes dishonest, and I respect Intoxalock now and would recommend to others! Thankyou!

Horrible company to deal with, all around. They will quote you one price, then charge hundreds of dollars over what they told you it would be. They bill you for charges that don't exist. I have checked with my local DMV, and the charges they list on my account, DO NOT EXIST. The device has caused serious mechanical problems with my vehicle. I have been inside a retail store shopping and came out to the parking lot, to my vehicle sitting there running, unlocked, just waiting for someone to steal it. They advised me that I might have to pay to get it fixed, but I won't know till I bring it back to the installer. I am sure they will say it's not the device's fault. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Complete scam
March 1, 2025
Updated review

The is company is a joke. No one should pay them any money for any reason. I'm currently in the process of starting a class action law suit against Intoxalock for faulty equipment, bogus violations and charges, hours of hold time to get nothing resolved. These worth individuals had my car disabled for the whole last month of me having to have the unit. Preventing me from being able to take my kids to school, go to work, or accomplish anything that I needed a vehicle for. If you have been victimized by Intoxalock please get ahold of me and let's hold them accountable in court. We have over 30 people ready to testify, we are looking to get 100+

This product is terrible.
April 28, 2021
Previous review

This product has been in my car for 4 months now. My car has been to the mechanic every week sense it has been installed. They have made me buy new battery's and ignitions and still can't get the issue resolved but they keep charging me more money for it. The device hasn't worked properly from the first time we brought home until current. The customer service phone line for this company is a joke also. So hopefully after your car won't start because this device gives you bogus violations and you call to find out what's going on. Just to get treated like crap by the person on the phone after you waited on hold for a minimum of 30 min. And your now late to work.
Going to jail for my DUII was more pleasant than my experience with Intoxalock... and I had to do my time with the sex offenders.

Avoid at all costs
February 1, 2025

I was sick day of installation but didn't reschedule to avoid $75 rescheduling fee. Device is very finicky. You will get lock for eating pizza any time close blowing. The company is sleazy, wrote a lease for 8 years when I need a 90 term, then claimed shortest they would do is a year. The reason is so if you have the difficulty I have had and want to get out of it sooner and change companies, the can charge big fat early termination fees.

Don't do it
January 1, 2025

The device was installed in my car in June of 2024. Since it has been getting colder outside here in New York, my car battery dies daily. We cannot plug a trickle charger, or any kind of charger into it overnight, as it will be stolen. We have had lockouts for battery dying, camera compliance because probation told us to move the camera, and another lock out for literally no reason. Yesterday, I went home on my lunch break, and when I tried to leave my house to go back to work, the device had a message on it saying, "Car unable to start device not serviced in time." The device was just serviced on December 18th, and my next calibration date isn't until February. So I called intoxaloc, who is never any help, and asked why my car was locked out. The girl on the phone told me she couldn't tell me and that I'd have to get my device serviced and call them back. Earlier today though I called and a male told me there is no lockout message on their end. They double charge us, customer service is awful and gives no real answers, their staff is very rude. Good luck with their talking in circles without providing any kind of assistance.

Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my entire life! The hold time is terrible! Device failure is almost weekly, they have swapped it out 7 times in 3 months due to failure and will strand you every time and it's on the customer to have their vehicle towed because of the device failure! Stay away! Tech support is useless!

I have never dealt with a $#*!tier company in my life. Make rules and change rules as they go along. I had paid all my fines, had that $#*!ing thing for over a year and a half, jumped through all the hooks to get my license back and when I called to schedule removal, guess who wouldn't pick up. My time is valuable to me and I'd paid my dues and I wasn't going to be a prisoner to those C Sucker's any longer, took the thing out myself, canceled my debit so they couldn't charge me another dime. A lot of people have given me $#*! for taking it out myself bit I had the paperwork from the court for it to be removed and I no longer was being monitored, got my license back. They try and scare you by saying the need information off of it, Bull$#*!, not being monitored, not my problem. Apparently I have to give 1 star because they won't let me give 0.

Do not get them!
July 30, 2024

Zero stars, not even one.
This company needs to be shut down. I wish someone could inform me on how to petition for their closure. They are stealing money, providing malfunctioning devices, issuing unwarranted violations, and the screens keep blinking. The violations require a payment of $150. And I was stuck home for 4 days was not able to go nowhere but still charge me almost 160$ every 2 weeks. I have had to replace my car battery three times. The customer service is extremely poor and I wonder where they find their customer service representatives. They deserve to be shut down.
And this is at least the 10th time going through the same $#*! with them, nothing to improve it.
Why isn't there an investigation into this company to ensure they are following regulations? Please let me know if there is a petition to have them closed or if there are any other actions that can be taken.

It's cheaper to uber
April 10, 2024

"BEWARE" they are very nice when you're setting up the install & giving you pricing that once it's installed all goes up$$ My install was $40. More than quoted & took 6 days since the service center was waiting for them to send the unit, the first one was defective. I sent in my paperwork & check to PennDot only to get it back in the mail saying I'm not required to have the unit installed. Their "salesman" told me I was required to have this installed in my state. Nope! Intoxalock never sent the installation paperwork in either. I called them several times stating I have a letter that I don't need this but kept saying I need my state to send them a letter. When a state representative tells you to just remove it, that tells you this company is a scam. Decided to take it & get it removed so after spending over $800. For a 60 day suspension I'm not giving these crooks another dime.
