I have been a member of Hex since 2007. I love the site for all the wonderful people that I have met over the years. Furthermore, Hex has a great interactive economy filled with items to collect which keeps users entertained and with a daily goal for the user to work towards earning galleons so as to be able to afford to buy the items that you want. There is a stock market and dirigible plums that can be done daily.
Every month there are events and contests to get involved with so there is always something new to look forward to. The site is run by volunteers and they are a dedicated group who try their best, even though many people forget they are also human and no place or person is wholly perfect. I have read many reviews here from people who have had bad experiences with staff, but unfortunately there is no smoke without fire in most cases.
If you are looking for a Harry Potter experience where you can be totally immersed in the world of Harry Potter and take part in classes and earning house points towards the house cup then Hexrpg is the only place you need to be.
I decided on two stars instead of one because this site is fun. The economy aspect is fun, as you can earn galleons and collect items from the HP universe. There are many fun people to talk to, contests to do, as well as some fun events that go on throughout the year. You can take HP classes like "Defense Against the Dark Arts", "Herbology", etc, and earn points for your house (which you get sorted into via a fun sorting quiz!) With that said though, the staff/mods cast a shadow over the entire site. Simply put, they are dictators. If your views don't align with them, they will find a way to silence you. And they show very poor judgment. One of their staff members constantly uses foul and derogatory language, and is generally very rude towards anyone who doesn't hold the same viewpoints as him/her. I mean, it's mind blowing they would even put someone like that on the staff. And the overall hypocrisy of the staff is overwhelming. You could be bullied by someone, but as long as the person doing the bullying holds the same views as the staff, they get a pass. But if you so much as criticize a viewpoint they may have, and not in a bullying manner, they will have the audacity to accuse you of bullying and use their power to silence your words. And don't believe the lie of "Acceptance and celebrating diversity" as they like to advertise on the site. They accept you if you are of the same mind as them. If not, you're gonna have a tough time. Hexrpg.com is a dictatorship. But just be aware before you join that that is what it is. If you join, do it with the knowledge that the staff is incompetent and will crush you if you disagree with them. Of course, as it usually is with other sites, not all the staff/mods are bad. There are some good ones. But unfortunately, the most extreme hypocrisy and rudeness does reside with the staff/mods who are higher up and hold the most power over the site. Which means, if you want to be assured of being treated fairly on the site, it will not happen with their current leadership (unless you have the same views as them). So tread carefully if you join this site. And try to have fun in spite of the staff. Because you're certainly not gonna have fun because of them.
I recently started playing this site and while I was working on my quiz to earn the gallons I was pranked by the user named sentstarr who clams to be 39 years old so I go to get even for what they did next thing I know one of the mods name Kate or however she spells it says that I've been reported for bulling sentstarr I find it complete bull$#*! I never meet sentstarr I was pranked only 4 minutes into activating my account like seriously so I told the mod what happened and they said if I sent an owl to sentstarr about anything I would be sent to Azkaban so I said go ahead and send me there it wasn't right for me to be pranked when I just started out on here and I told them if this keeps happening just to shut my account down and I'll wait for the Harry Potter Hogwarts mystery game to come out and when I logged in today I found out that I'm in Azkaban until 4:28am on Valentine's day
The site has so much potential, unfortunately, the moderators are a nasty bunch to deal with. It is run by volunteers who also have accounts and their own cliques. If you are not part of the clique, look out, you will be targeted in one way or another.
The sites is quite fun, but be careful of not breaking any rules, whether you didnt mean it or its just a TINY very TINY mistakes, they could send you to azkaban without waiting us to defend ourselves. The staffs there are totally stucked up, arrogant people. To think that they are older than me is truly unbelievable. SOme of them even as old as my mom, but their behaviour is so damn rude and childish. Just dont contact them or trying to be friendly with them, its just wasting your time. I made few friends there, most of hexians are nice, excecpt ofc like i said before their staff is such a turn off.
I love the website, I have bcome a good writer (I write a FanFic series on HEX) I have made so many friends and you can actually live the Harry Potter experience! If you haven't found your life on there, keep looking - you will find it.
BUT, I think some of the mods are very unfair. No kidding. I was doing nothing, and sent to Azkaban for posting in all caps... like, seriously!?
Also, there can be some really rude users on there. I know that happens on every website, but is it normal that almost every day you log in, you have to keep thinking, "it isn't real. It isn't real. It's just a website." and then they tell you to not take it personally?! Nuh-uh!
And the ignoring? Horrible. You post somewhere, you are ignored. Unless the thread includes your hogfriends (hogwarts friends) you have a big chance of people just ignoring you and it makes you want to just crumble to the floor or log out and do something else.
Other than that it's a really good website. Best Harry Potter website there is. Pottermore used to be cool, but now HEX is loads better. I definitely suggest joining but be careful who you make friends with - it might not end good.
The graphics are very elementary school-like. The moderators are absolute jerks who have no business moderating to begin with. Stay far away from Hex.
I would stay away, they constantly ban you when you do one thing wrong. My sister joined the site as well & they sent us both to Azkaban & reset all my galleons. I had spent ages getting and aquired over 100 million. When I inquired about why I was banned for my sister joining I was told that it was my responsibility to keep any friends or family from joining a site? I told them I was 400 miles away at the time she had created the account & I still did not receive anything other then a "you can earn it back, many have before." Okay but why would I waste more time on a site where I already had collections & everything. I feel the staff are disrespectful & if you have more money then they want you to have they will find a way to ban your account.
I completely disagree with the users who say that hexrpg.com is a terrible website. I have been a member since March 6,2017 and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS WEBSITE! Are there moderators who are mean, rude and unfair? Probably! However, I have found that they are few and far between! I have found that users can be mean, rude and unfair though!
I have made many great friends on hexrpg.com, including a reviewer on this site who left of her own choosing. Was she treated unjustly and accused of something she hadnt meant to do? Yes! Would I have quit, maybe! I just now I miss my friend known *******@dianavdmijde
The things I like most about hexrpg.com are the friends I have made, Role Playing a student, taking classes (some of them, such as Astronomy are real meaning you can find what are written in The lessons by searching the web. They didnt make it up! Are all of the classes real of course not but, who cares! They are still fun to take!
The site also offers continuous contests. Yes, I have won a few! Last but not least, hexrpg.com does not cost a dime to play/use
Does this site have its issues? Yes but dont all sites? I believe the great things that I have mentioned far outway any of the bad that other reviewers have mentioned! So if you are looking for the ultimate Harry Potter experience, want to meet some great people and make some great, possibly lifelong friends, then give hexrpg.com a try! Personally, I believe, from what I saw when checking out Pottermore.com that hexrpg.com is far more superior!
I am now in my 2nd year and I could not have imagined how great this would be. I created a Dorm called Dark Souls since I am Slytherin Pureblood and fancy the Dark Arts that is potion making. I have 30 wonderful, gifted, elite roomies that are active and make my home away from home awesome. I am a member of the club Shatters Death Eaters and that is the icing on the cake as I have learned so much RP from them. There are contests, events, rare items to covet or if your lucky own and new friends from all over the world. My RP and essay writing have improved and now I dabble in the stock market and plums for galleons. I love the library section and have written a couple of books that are in the restricted section lol. Overall I plan on being here for a very long time.
The items are ranged from rarity 1 to 7, with 1 being the rarest. Now, I'm suspecting that the lottery and contest systems are being more "merciful" to new users. More and more new users are getting the rarer items. Old users are all millionaires. Stuck in the middle with no crazy amount of items or galleons are the 1/2 year users.
There are many items that you can only get if you're a staff member for a very long time. Stocks come late because of 1 person's delay. The inflation is TERRIBLE. Everything is in millions now. 50k 5 years ago is a couple million today. If you don't have at least 3 million in your on-hand money, you can barely pay for one rare and desirable item!
Roleplaying is alright, I suppose. The site-wide lotteries are rigged to be more lenient towards the newbies. I suspect that the rarer REs are, too. If you don't have a hundred thousand on-hand, you can't even go a fortnight with it, especially if you participate in the lottery regularly.
I suppose the mods are alright. Motherof3 is an admin now, but thank goodness I had never needed to meet with her.
So I cheat on everything, it's like a problem I have. I even did it on Hexrpg. About 2 years ago when I joined I was completely obsessed with it and wanted to be in all the houses. Yeah I got sent to Azkaban for like 3 months and everything I won was deleted. I don't blame them, but after that I deleted my account. Came to my senses and wanted to reenable my account, got it back started from scratch. I have not made a single friend on their. Lol. Im definitely on thier list of bad gmails. Bloody helll. Besides that, most of the moderators are awful, literally anyone in power or well known. I hold grudges, so on my list of most rude people on hex are: Motherof3, sparrowstorm (Global Moderator), charmedeema (Account Officer)
Some are nice like: Spike (Global moderator)
I think Hannah Abbott (Slytherin AHOH) is nice, at least from what I have seen... idk about the others. Not recommended for young children but for heartless evil people... i need to quit
I've been a member of HEX for nearly a year and I have loved every minute of it. Almost all of the other users are super supportive and friendly, the staff is very helpful and hardworking, and there is a plethora of entertaining events and contests.
I've never been overly high on the totem pole of hexians, but I've been in positions where I was able to see a little bit of what goes into this site. The amount of time and effort that the staff members and mods put into making HEX a fun place is astounding. Everything they do is for the benefit of the users. They're actually obligated to follow the rules too, so nobody should complain about unfair regulations.
I would definitely recommend HEX to any Harry Potter fan! It's a wonderful site to discuss HP with other people, challenge yourself, and really just have a good time.
The hate below is clearly mostly from users who didn't follow the simple and clear rules. HEX is a wonderful community full of magic and fun. The staff work very hard to see it succeed and it is often a thankless job. If you are looking for an HP site like no other, come on over and join. You won't be sorry :)
Here's the thing: When you have an issue and finally get it addressed, they'll send you lots of galleons. Between that? No responses and completely ignored. Other than that, the site is amazing!
The people in charge let thier friends fo pratically whatever they want. Moderators seem to abuse there powers. They pick and choose who they want to help and It defeats the purpose, and it's not good for some of the younger users to be around it. I don't recommend it for younger users. The site terms says it's for all ages but when I browsed around on my 11 year old daughters account I immediately decided to remove her account, with some of the stuff the others on this site talk about. If you are a parent of children who use this site, I strongly recommend have a look at the a lot of the stuff going on this site. There is so much innapropiate behavior and talk every where on there.
I love Hex, I have a ton of friends there. Though, I have no idea why people think it's such a bad place. It isn't the site that has done wrong, it's the staff. People act like the mods are cruel people, but they're not. Keep in mind, the staff have hundreds, maybe even thousands of users to manage.
On Hex, you can do anything you really set your mind to. Heck, you don't even have to do Harry Potter roleplays. You could search for hidden forums, make a club, and so many other things. I know people keep saying you shouldn't use Hex, but maybe you should give it a try. It's better to have your own opinion rather than go by someone else's.
This site is run by a quick to judge, rude, and ask no questions type of group. I've been on this site for 5+ years and each year it gets worse. Everyone on the mod team think they are 'above the law' in this website. If you run across a user "MotherOf3" I'd suggest you run away as well as this user seems to think it's her website and she's is most certainly rude. Best to stay away from this website at all costs. I know I'm most certain to leave.
I love Hexrpg and I would love to address some of the negative reviews about it:
1. The mods have all of the power.
I don't think you realize this, but in order to become a mod, you have to be elected by the normal everyday Hex users. So you really can't blame hex for having bad staff because 99% of them are elected by everyday Hexers.
2. The problem about multiple accounts
If you create more than one account, you are given 48 hours to respond to the owl. The owl is sent to both accounts. If you give a response that requires more insight, we will hold off from deleting either account. These people who are complaining about there accounts being deleted did not respond to the owls sent to them
3. People saying that the pg123 rating is "confining:
I don't think that you realize that people of any age are using this site. There are children age 8 and 9 on this site, and I am SURE that many of there parents wouldn't let them on a site that wasn't pg13 rated.
4. The site only exists to make money
This is not true. Running a site is very expensive, and the donation area is simply trying to make it less costly for the owners of the site to keep the site running. The donations are actually hasn't existed for that long
So overall, I love hex, and I hope you will ignore all of the terrible reviews
So recently my accounts has been disabled, i tried to reason with staff, but no, those monkey staff didnt even give your chance to explain, they just disabled my accounts like that, worst they reset my account to zero, where all my items and galleons are gone. Reason was they found i had another account (that i didnt login for ages let alone active there). These horrid staff should just disabled my other account and warned me, but no they had to show they run those sites and kick me out just like that. So for newbies its not worth your time. They sometimes had ridiculous rules for a site who claim 'fun sites'. I heard alot about motherof3 mod, and i've encountered once with her, that grandma really think she owned the site, she's really a stucked up mod. There are some nice mods but only few of them esp the new one, the rest just like to stick to their gang and bully others by kicking everyone if they found one tiny mistakes that we didnt even mean to do it. I totally abandoned this site, its not worth my $#*!ing time!
Answer: From what I've seen in the negative reviews, most of these have broken the rules and were upset when they were punished accordingly. HEX does not allow multiple accounts, which is clearly stated in the rules. The idea that they automatically ban you with no warning or chance to explain yourself is completely false, as is the idea that other people aren't allow to have accounts in your household. I've been on the site for years and even recently became a moderator. All of these negative reviews talking about how terrible the staff is? Not allowed. Seriously, if any of us tried any of that stuff, we'd get in trouble faster than you could click report. Most of the negative reviews are simply from users who broke the rules and didn't like getting punished for it, along with the one or two reviewers who seemed to miss that HEX is PG-13. As someone whose been on the site for four years, let me assure you that they have given a completely off-base account of the site.
Answer: I have Aspergers and when I explained this to staff members who have attacked me over things I've said which they misinterpreted, and tried to explain what I really meant, I was basically told "tough luck" because what they say goes and their personal interpretation of what you say is the only meaning they will accept. It's happened to a few other Autistic Hexians as well from what I've heard. So, in all honesty? Avoid the bigger global mods and staff members/admins where you can because otherwise you might regret it if one of them reads you wrong and doesn't care to ask you for clarification. It's not worth the trouble. 95% of the regular users are very nice and understanding about the Autism spectrum though so don't shy away from talking about it if you need to.
Answer: If the negative reviews are all around the same time, and all have similar spelling/grammatical issues, they're from the same butt-hurt people who got banned for rule-breaking and are now salty.
Answer: I believe it is. I am a current member of the site and have found many wonderful friends and it has become a place for me to log into after a long day at school or work and not have to worry about the drama of everyday life. Granted, nothing is 100% perfect, as just like humans, the site still has some kinks that occur and you will find there to be some negative people who feed off of drama and misery. It is a matter of just being yourself and deciding which environment and experience you wish to have. The rules may seem silly or ridiculous, but some are in place due to COPPA or just keeping the users safe along with general online etiquette. So yes, it is worth it.
Answer: Yes, the site is free. There are options to pay in to get perks (items mostly), but they are in no way required.
Answer: Best way is the stock market because over time you receive dividends.
