Thank you for your response but it really doesn't help anything because I have done all of those suggestions you had and told your support as much and that was the answer I still got. I am very knowledgeable in the process of filing returns and such I've been preparing and filing returns for many years and am VERY familiar with how it works, As I said before I followed all the proper steps and it still has no record of my return! Where would you like me to send my private email too?
I have used this site for a few years not just for myself but my entire family and extended family also, But this year I have had trouble and basically they said nothing we can do sucks to be you! I sent my return via freetaxusa and got an acceptance notification on February 28th my tax return was transmitted sucessfully well it is now March 17th and the IRS shows nothing about my return says it has not been filed. When I notified freetaxusa support I was told it showed it had been accepted and there was nothing they could do to help me find out where it was or why the IRS has not received it! Wow really I will never use this site again and I will tell everyone how bad the support is. I am appalled at this service and lack of responsibility this site has when handling such important material
I teach tax law in law school so i know the basic rules although I am not a return preparer. I have been using Turbo Tax for years and not enjoying how much time it takes me to finish a return. They ask too many questions for me and I'm not sure how to skip them although override is sometimes successful.
FreeTaxUSA took me half the time and was much clearer to me -- not to mention cheaper. I balked at using Turbo Tax this year because the edition I had been using year after year suddenly eliminated the full Schedule C. I'm an employee but I have enough consulting income to warrant a Schedule C -- but I don't need a full bells and whistles self employment option for almost twice the price.
And is was great that they could import all my information from my prior filings via Turbo Tax.
I signed in yesterday, completed my return today -- and have word that both federal and state have been accepted,
Everyone has different needs but for my needs this option was terrific. Not perfect -- they did insist that I go back and make entries for things i had left blank because I had nothing to report this year -- and it wasn't clear where the deduction for self employed long term health care went -- but in the end it all worked out.
Thank you for the review! We appreciate your analysis of the software and look forward to seeing you next year.
They suck, i used them last 3 years. They are terrible and getting worse. They lose pass words pass years income tax returns, stay away. Use turbotax.
Hi Chris, we value our customers and their information and do all we can to keep it secure. Part of this requires that we strictly protect your returns with a username, a password, and security questions. If you are unable to recall your account access information, we have "Forgot Username" and "Forgot Password" features available on the sign in screen. If you need assistance, we do have a friendly support staff that can help. Please send an email to [email protected]. If you'd prefer to private message me your email address, I'd be happy to have someone look into this.
I have used this site for several years with no problem until this year. Their program is easy to use and I was satisfied until this year. For a weird reason I had to mail my state forms rather than efile the state. Trouble is that they do not tell you that until you have paid the $12.95 email fee for the state return. And they refuse to return the payment-just a lot of double talk. I will find another program in the future.
Hello Sherry, I apologize for any confusion. We do have a preparation fee for state returns whether you e-file or mail your return. The fee is a flat $12.95 and there are never any hidden fees like many other sites. If you have any questions about why you needed to mail your state return, we will be happy to look into that for you. Please contact our Customer Support by clicking on "Contact Support" when you're logged into your account and our support representatives will be happy to assist you.
This is a follow up to my review from a few weeks ago when I lamented that the Free Tax USA software did not rollover my NYS pension from the Federal tax form to the NYS tax form, nor give me an alert to consider. As feared, NYS did not catch this mistake, so I was forced to complete an amended NYS tax form. Free Tax wanted $15 for a completed amendment, which I complained about, but received no response to a request to not be charged. I finally decided to go ahead with the amendment procedure, only to find it was nearly impossible to complete! I sent a question to them about this and basically the answer I received was that I have to make sure that my NYS pension amount was not added into my tax form. WISH I'D THOUGHT OF THAT! Long story short, I ended us printing off a blank copy or the amendment form and completing it by hand. NEVER AGAIN WILL I USE FREETAXUSA!
Hello Wayne, I'm sorry to here you weren't happy with FreeTaxUSA. Since many different types of pensions can be entered in the federal portion of the software, we don't automatically subtract the pension on your New York return. However, we do ask you for the amount of your pension that is eligible for the full subtraction on the Subtractions from Income screen in the New York portion of the software. I'm very sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations. We do appreciate the feedback you have given.
And have recommended to friends and have used it to help others. NEVER a problem. SO eazzzzy! Even complicated returns are done perfectly - it is so easy that paying for the state is a bargain...
Thank you for the review! We look forward to seeing you again next year.
If you're on Google researching this place just turn around and never enter the website. My friends also had the same problem last year charged 15 dollars for putting his taxes online for a service called tax preparation which never efiled his taxes just copied what he already had printed out. Same situation that has happen to me. Im done ----- this business. To the fullest extent. I feel the need to go to the Better business bureau or a lawyer at this point. They are scamming costumers who never clicked agree to paying to only a 15 useless service. They also are aware that it cost more to get your money back which hurts the lower income families that rely on that 15 dollars.
Thanks for reaching out to us, Bert! We do all we can to make sure that our taxpayers can e-file. There are some cases, however, when the IRS will not accept returns through e-file. We guarantee our service, so if you are unhappy with any charges, one of our customer support representatives would be happy to investigate and set things right. Please send an email to [email protected].
When you aren't told until AFTER you pay that your INELIGIBLE to efile... after posting my not so supportive review, i was very pleased to get a response from FreeTaxUSA. I am waiting for a direct call or email from them to hopefully remedy the situation. Will keep posted. Changed rating from 1 star to 3 as i am impressed they got back to me so quickly! Billy
Hi Allan, I'm really sorry! Unfortunately, the IRS and states will no longer accept prior year returns through e-file, so the only way to file your prior year return is with paper forms. We appreciate your remarks and will use them as we look for ways to make the software better for our customers. We will contact you directly to find a resolution.
For the last two years I have had trouble logging into FreeTaxUSA.com. Last year I had to create a new password each time I wanted to log in. I finally got my taxes done. This year I had to create a new account because after about 20 trys I could not log n. Each time I created a new password, and it was accepted. But it would not allow me to log in. I had nearly finished my taxes but had to log out. I have since not been able to get back into the account no matter how many new passwords I have created. I have also tried another browser with no better results. I have jused FTU for years, but the last 2 it has gone to pot. The company is not fixing it, only responding in such a way as to imply I am stupid and it is my error. I now have to find another program that works.
Hello, Miriam, I'm sorry to hear you've had trouble accessing your account and would like to follow up with you on this. Can you private message me your email address?
I have used FreeTaxUSA for 5-6 years maybe a bit longer with no problems other than the one time I forgot to add some information. One thing that makes me a little upset not with FreeTaxUSA but some of the people that give FreeTaxUSA a bad review. Please, people, take on the responsibility of your own mistakes and stop blaming FreeTaxUSA. The software they have works just fine and have used it for many years and intend to keep using it.
Thanks for the review, Dean! We look forward to helping you file your 2017 tax return.
I received a letter from IRS this summer (2017) telling me that I had not paid taxes on my retirement income for 2015. I remembered entering the data from my 1099R when I filed my 2015 taxes, but it was not there in my return. Unfortunately, I had not checked the arithmetic myself so I had not noticed the error. When I filed my 2016 taxes, it was easier to enter the 1099R data because the software remembers the payer information and prompts you to fill out the form. When I contacted FreeTaxUSA about the error on my 2015 taxes, the support person insisted that I had failed to enter my 1099R. Now, I had to pay the federal taxes plus interest, amend my 2015 federal and state forms (for a fee), and pay additional state taxes. The refunds I received in 2016 for my federal and state taxes were greater than the amount I had to pay after recalculating. I had used FreeTaxUSA since 2012, but now I cannot trust them.
Hi Christine, thanks for writing and I sincerely apologize for the frustration. We guarantee the calculations made by the software to be 100% accurate based on the information entered and would be happy to look into this further. Will you please private message your email address?
I will never use this free tax service again. A mistake was made on my 2015 tax return and we received a refund. I just received a letter from IRS stating that we owe them $5,000 for retirement income that was not reported! All of this information was input but FreeTaxUSA failed to include it in our total income. I will go back to using TurboTax as they are much more reliable. Not happy...
Hi Cheryl, thanks for writing. One of our customer service agents would be more than happy to help sort this out. You can contact them by logging into your account and clicking on the "Contact Support" link to the left of any screen or by sending an email to [email protected].
I have send my taxes in about 10 have been rejected. Most company will have a telephone number listed. No number listed to contact them. Just a list of questions and answers on their website. What if you have questions that are not listed. We never use them again.
Hi Cynthia, I understand that rejections can be frustrating and I’m sorry to hear that you weren’t able to get your questions answered. We do offer customer support, so if you have questions, you can send an email to [email protected] or you can click on the "Contact Support" link when logged into your account. Our customer support team is standing by and is happy to help.
I have been filling my own taxes for 8 years, I usually use H&R block free service online, this year they wanted to charge me so I searched the internet for a new website to file for free. I found freetaxusa.com it appeared to be a safe site so I filed state and federal with them. It has been four weeks since I have filed I have yet to received my refund back. That's 20 business days. I have never had a refund take this long, the website cannot even tell me when it may be deposited and I'm unable to get in contact with a live person, when I called I just get a recording that tells me the same thing the website does that it is still processing. So after 20 business days not only do I not have access to my funds, I also don't know when it will be deposited. I've received no further email apologizing for such a delay, or explanation as to why I don't have my money in my account. I will never file with them again.
Hello Sam, thank you for writing. The first thing you'll want to do is double check the date that your return was accepted. To do this, log into your account and click on the "Home" link followed by "Check Return Status." The IRS says that most refunds will be processed within 21 days, but there are some exceptions. Once your return has been accepted, the processing and timing of that refund is in the hands of the IRS. Unfortunately, we do not have a way to expedite the processing of your refund, and for security reasons, the IRS will not discuss refund information with software vendors. Therefore you can continue to check the status by going to the IRS web site and clicking on the "Where's My Refund?" link.
If you have questions about your return or would like to make sure that your return has been accepted, one of our customer support representatives would be happy to help. Please send them an email at [email protected] or click on the "Contact Support" link when logged into your account.
Hey listen, I never wanted to use an online tax service because I generally get my taxes done for free by the military. But on the day before tax day deadline, they weren't taking anymore clients. I was then faced with using one of tax sharks... won't put any names here, but you know them all so well, and you know their commercials on Tv and radio. A friend recommended me to FREETAXUSA.COM. One of those sharks gave me an over the phone estimation of $300 - $500. Now, going back to FREETAXUSA.COM, remember, I filed on tax day deadline, my federal refund was deposited exactly one week later, one of my two state refunds will be deposited tonight, only 9 days after filing. This is what I call great service. It only cost me $23.31 because I had two state returns to file, otherwise, it would have been half of that price for one state. Federal returns are free. So, if you live in one of those income tax free states, then this is a great service to use. Their online software is very user friendly. Don't be discouraged by the negative reviews posted here, this is my first experience using this service and a very positive one. They get a 5-star rating from me.
CHEERS!
Sam (Newport News, VA)
Under the impression I could e file my state tax I went on the website spent about two hours filling out forms, paid and then was told I could only e-file used both federal and state. The whole reason I even paid for this service was to submit my taxes on time since I all ready sent my federal taxes by mail. I can't get a refund for the $13 I wasted and now my state taxes are late.
Hi Fu, sorry for any confusion. You can only e-file a state return if you also e-file your federal return using our software. This is a policy for most tax software companies and is done to add an extra layer of security to all e-filed state returns. Similar to mailing your federal return, a mailed state return would still be considered filed on-time as long as it’s postmarked by the deadline.
I would rather have a root canal than do my taxes! I used FreeTaxUSA because my brother recommended it and this was the easiest return ever, I had a W-2,3 1099's, vehicle depreciation and itemized deductions which are enough to make my eyes roll back in my head so naturally I waited until the last minute. Entering the info for my return took less than 1 hour and the system prompted me through every step, finding deductions and credits I wasn't aware of and I'm getting a refund:-) I live in FL which does not have state returns so my transaction was totally free. Love this site!
I have been using FreeTaxUSA for 7 years. Always have been happy with their service. Until 2017 -- now I cannot pay the $23 for the services (filing 2 state returns).
I get
"Authorization was declined. Please verify your payment information or use a different credit card or bank account."
Error, even though the info is correct. I try a different card. Same result.
My girlfriend is doing her taxes, and hit the same issue. Tried several of her credit and debit cards, no luck. The only option is to have the fee deducted from tax return, FOR EXTRA $20 going to their pocket. Are they serious?!
No thank you, going to file with a different provider instead.
Utter frustration.
EDIT: I contacted the FreeTaxUSA folks through their "Support" section and got a fast response, even though it was weekend. It turns out the payment was failing because I was trying to pay from outside the US (traveling in Europe at the moment). The decline would not have been so surprising and frustrating if the error message was actually saying the reason "You cannot submit payment from this country", preferably at the beginning of the process. Once I figured out that this was indeed the problem, I was able to submit the payment -- if you are in this situation you want to spoof your geolocation, e.g. by using something like tor-browser, or ask someone in the US to submit the payment for you.
Changing to 4 stars, as the only issue really is misleading error message.
Hi Miroslav, I'd be happy to look into your payment issues and will private message you for details.
Completing my taxes has taken far longer than needed as their is no support from this site. You are made to wait 24 hours for an answer delaying the already frustrating process of submitting taxes. The fee for state taxes is also more than I would expect to pay due to my low income this year as I was prevented from working due to medical issues.
Hi Becca, thanks for writing. I'd be happy to follow up on any issues you had and will send you a private message.
I'm trying to pay for the service and it's denied multiple cards from different banks. It then tells me I can pay to upgrade for better support?! Why can't you just work the first time? I just want to pay to file my taxes and be done with it.
Hi Britt, thanks for writing. One of our customer support representatives would be happy to help resolve your payment issue. You can contact them by sending an email to [email protected] or by clicking on the "Contact Support" link while logged into your account. Our customer support services are free so there's no need to pay anything or upgrade.
Answer: Hi Janet, sorry for any confusion. The $12.95 fee is for state tax return preparation whether the tax return is e-filed or printed and mailed. In regard to your difficulty paying. When you make a debit or credit card purchase online, the card processor checks with your bank or credit card issuer to first make sure you have enough available credit to complete the purchase. The card processor then makes sure the other information you input (for instance, your address) matches what your bank has on record. If all is well, the transaction is processed. If not, such as an address that doesnt match, then the transaction is declined. If you were having difficulty with each card, I would recommend double checking the billing information you entered on FreeTaxUSA. If thats all correct, I would contact your bank and make sure the information they have on file is up-to-date. If youre ever having trouble while using our site, you can click on the Contact Support link or email our customer support team at [email protected] and a support team member will be happy to assist you.
Answer: Hi Theresa! If you have not submitted your taxes and need to make changes, you can use the tabs near the top of the screen (Personal, Income, Deductions/Credits, etc.) to navigate to the area you want to make changes. If you've already filed, you'll need to amend your taxes in order to make changes. Our support agents would be happy to give more information for either case. You can contact them by selecting "Support" in your account.
Answer: Hi Mahlon, we are happy to help you with your questions. I'm sorry but we do not have phone support at this time. If you need some help you can contact us at [email protected]
Answer: Hi Byron, thank you for reaching out. We are sorry to hear of the frustrations you are experiencing. Once the state return has been paid for and the return is finalized the returns are available for you to print. Would you please sign into your account and select to contact Support. This will allow us to assist you best.
Answer: Hi Peter. Thank you for your question. FreeTaxUSA is unable to mail your return for you. However, if you choose to mail your return on the Filing Method screen found under the Filing menu, our software will tell you how/where to mail your return. You can print a copy of your federal tax return for free on the Check Status/Print Tax Return screen also found under the Filing menu. If you don't have a printer and would like to order a printed copy, you can do that on the Order Products and Services screen found in the same menu.
Answer: Hi, Sean! That's a great question. Our software is entirely browser-based, so it will be compatible with any operating system running a major browser. This includes Chrome, Edge, Safari, iOS, and Firefox.
Answer: Hello Linda. I am sorry you have not yet received your tax refund. The IRS typically issues the refund in about 21 days. However, this is just an average and not a rule. Please check the status of your Federal refund at www.irs.gov/refunds. Your state will also have a similar site where you can check the status of your refund. If you have any questions after you have checked the status of your refunds, please sign into your FreeTaxUSA account and click on the Contact Support menu option.
Answer: Hello Shannon! Yes, you can prepare both your 2021 and 2022 taxes using our software, but you will enter each year's information separately in each year's software. Current year taxes can be e-filed, and prior year taxes will need to be mailed. There is no charge for e-filing, but we do have additional products available (such as State Tax Returns) for an additional cost. Our support agents would be happy to answer any additional questions at [email protected].
