The glasses were not to the right prescription and had been made for distance vision rather than reading, necessitating that I return them for a correction.

Good information, excellent help via chat. I guess glasses and coatings are just expensive, but it was more than I had expected. Still, got a nice pair for a fairly reasonable price.
