Scammed
April 5, 2023

I used Dollar at the palm springs airport for two different cars. I returned both vehicles full of gas. They charged me for a full tank. I did not accept their offer to fill the tank when I signed the contract originally.
Agent approved the condition of the car saying everything is fine but he didn't have time to print receipt. Do not listen to agent on returning the car but insist that you get your receipt. After I complained to headquarters they have done nothing to return my money. Got scammed by thrifty just a month earlier. When I trusted the agent at the counter. Both thrifty and dollar are owed by Hertz. Beware!

They do not honor existence reservations as well as overbooking at each location and let you sit in line for two and and a half hours before they tell you at the counter no cars are available. Three $#*! companies that have zero customer service or care.

No customer service
December 30, 2022

Booked a car and prepaid the car with Discover Cars.com. When i went to pickup the car, Dollar Car Rental advised me that they had no cars. I called Discover Cars.com (for over 2 hours) and they told me that they could not help and basically I was on my own. They said that I could book another car (even tho I already paid for a car) and I could file a claim and hope for the best. They told me they have no other cars and no other solution, however on their website, cars are available to be rented. "We cannot help you" I also called Dollar Car Rental and they basically have no customer service, all they can do is assist in new bookings. "You have to call the location sir. We cannot call them" So I call the location (Dollar Fort Lauderdale Airport) and they do not answer the phone, ever. It's been hours I am trying to reach them. Meanwile, I am in a foreign country with my wife and child. Awful experience overall.

This is completely unacceptable: to be a car rental company and to not honour and have a car ready. I understand that mistakes can happen, but be advised Dollar Car Rental has no customer service. Try yourself calling for yourself.

Horrible Experience
December 27, 2022

Do not use dollar rental company! This company will charge you for any change that you make your reservation, even if it change benefits of them. In addition, I had a flat tire on the road and they wanted to charge me for that, even though there was no reason for the flat tire other than I was changing a lane. They said they gave me a good car, but that cannot be the case if I just got a flat tire just driving the vehicle. When you call for the company to help, you will sit on the phone for hours, waiting to talk to someone. It was just a terrible experience all around!

Do not rent a car from Dollar Car especially at the Portland airport! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! I would rather walk than deal with their shady, unethical business practices. They are the absolute worse rental car company I have ever dealt with in my entire life! After we had a minor accident that damaged the bumper, they charged astronomical fees for loss of use. They sent the repair charges and the vehicle was in the shop for 6 hours, yet they charged me hundreds of dollars for days of repairs. My insurance company refused to pay stating it was a scam. When I raised the issues with them, they threatened to send me to collections, were unprofessional and unworkable. They refuse to compromise and make demands that are not in the contract. Go to any other rental car company! This company is terrible! The absolute worst! I cannot thoroughly express how horrible my experience has been. They operate a shady, fraudulent scheme where they are scamming customers for unsubstantiated loss of use charges. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM DOLLAR CAR RENTAL EVER!

Fraudulent business practices are in full swing at a Dollar Car Rental counter near you. It is my hope that my recent experience at a Chicago O'Hare Dollar Car Rental counter will give pause to those asking to produce a credit card for "a deposit if car damage occurs." That's the jargon the counter agent spewed even though my reservation had been paid in full prior to my arrival through a travel agency. When asked to sign the signature pad, you see nothing of what you are agreeing to sign for, other than for what the "word" of the counter agent had you believe you are signing for.

Do not sign any screen unless the agent produces a "print screen " version of what you actually are signing-period. What my experience taught me was that verbally declining additional insurances went deaf to the agents' ears as I was billed hundreds of dollars of unwanted coverages on my final bill. It was only after the incident that I found that these types of add-ons to rental contracts are commissionable incentives for counter agents... voila!

If you are needing to use Dollar Car Rental, assume the counter agent will ignore your verbal request to not add unwanted charges-pull out your phone and inform that counter person that you are recording the conversation. If you are asked to present an additional credit card, ask for a print screen of all charges you are agreeing to sign for. I'm now having to fight with the credit card company to retrieve my lost $$$'s. You shouldn't have to go through what countless others like myself have had to experience with Dollar Car Rental. Read the countless reviews as they are rampant!

Scam
August 25, 2022

I know there are others from reading similar post around, but Dollar has a scam within their system. Hard to believe at first when you start playing their stupid game until you come to find after thinking that after thinking surely someone has the ability to correct only to find that it is in fact a scam and they're going to follow through with it. Customer representative was told no extras and NO insurance was needed, Then they have a tiny little blank screen they say to go ahead and sign after they tell you they understand and that all is good from my statement. Only to find they did in fact charge me for additional insurance, adding 50 percent increase to the total bill. And then when you say "Hey, this is wrong!" you get the old. "You signed for it". There is no confusion as to what was said. I was not the only one there to hear it and have witnesses. There is no misconstruing what took place. It is fraud and a scam. Appears this has also happened to many people. My question as I will (and presently doing) in using every platform to do what I can due to having extreme difficulty in backing off when robbed is that does anyone know if I can press charges against the customer representative who began this?

Beware of this rip off practice!
August 16, 2022

After a terrible flight totaling 11.5 hrs from London to Orlando, I checked in for my Dollar rental car tired, exhausted & jet lagged. I was asked at the desk if I would like to return the car empty & they would lock in the price of $4.50 per gallon. I agreed and was asked to sign. I signed.
Although the gas station price was only $3.50 something, I figured it was a mistake but I'll live with it.

When I received my Credit card bill on my return I discovered I had also been charged $224.75 for 'Premium Road Service' (whatever that is).
I had not been asked about this 'service' & if I had, I would have certainly refused. My total (extra) payments for Dollar was $360.80.
THIS IS A TOTAL RIP OFF!
As stated, my signature is on it, but after almost 12 hrs in the air etc, who is going to read all the small print, or think that a major rental company like Dollar will be conning people like that?

I don't suppose that I will get any refund, but wanted to put it out there & warn anyone using Dollar that they will try to con you, so beware and read everything before you sign.

Dollar charges toll fees without explaining a $10.99/day fee is applied for Activating Toll Plates. I was told there are toll roads in Orlando and that she is activating the toll plates, never explained that there is a $10.99 fee per day. I never went through a toll and was charged $60. When I asked for it to be refunded they said the same thing over and over. Nothing can be done. LOL

Unfair Practice
May 11, 2022

I did not incur any of the charges listed on a letter I received from Dollar rental concerning toll charges. I paid EVERY toll that I approached with cash. I did not & would not ignore paying a toll as it is the law. The charges & the costly administrative fees are not warranted and was wrongly charged. If they charge my card I will dispute it as it is not fair & I do not owe them.

Wish there was a ZERO rating
April 12, 2022

Wish the site had a ZERO rating; WORST car rental experience I HAVE EVER HAD! Arrived at the Dollar counter at the Gillespie St. Car rental facility that services the Las Vegas McCarren Airport at 1:00 on a Sunday (big arrival day for Las Vegas visitors) It started right away; EIGHT reception terminals and only ONE receptionist checking patrons in. (reminded me of a bad grocery story). We only had TWO people ahead of us and yet waited over 30 minutes just to reach the receptionist;... why the car rental industry has not been able to automate and/or expedite a simple rental process remains appalling to me.

She of course was a real peach! This person (Paulette, I believe) IS NOT in the right business; mean, cranky and short-tempered! I was as cooperative as could be just so I could get-the-heck away from her! Finally got the almighty paperwork to proceed downstairs to collect my vehicle. Uh-oh! The Dollar kiosk seems to also serve the Thrifty kiosk (as the kiosks are one and the same) and with only ONE ATTENDANT the two lines were already 20 people deep on both sides (40+)! With NO attendant visible I gathered my info from fellow patrons only to find there were NO CARS AVAILABLE, and they were only checking you out as cars came in, went through the cleaning process and were delivered one by one to the kiosk area. OMG! What kind of business stays open WITH NO INVENTORY!

To add anxiety to anxiety the cars exiting the facility were 23 deep in line and for some reason taking an avg. Of 90 seconds per car (I know because with nothing better to do but WAIT I was timing each car's departure time) just to EXIT THE FACILITY! (3 booths, only 1 open) You do the math! OUCH!

The attendant was running around, and rightfully-so, very stressed out, stating; "I'm doing about 8 things at once here so please be patient". And we all WERE being very patient, but spending our vacation time standing in a dusty, dark, hot parking garage awaiting the arrival of a car we booked weeks in advance, was not what any of us had in mind!

Cars arrived ever-so-slowly as we inched our way to the front of the line. 30, 35, 40, 45 minutes later a car finally pulled up. But with two lines we didn't know if it was for us or the other line, so waited, waited and waited some more with no attendant in sight. Exasperated, one of the other frustrated customers returned to the reception area upstairs only to return with the news that THE ATTENDANT HAD GONE ON BREAK! FIFTY people awaiting a vehicle AND SHE GOES ON BREAK! UNBELIEVABLE! I don't care if she is UNION (or not), her moral compass alone should have kicked-in and said; "I'll sit this break out to help these folks"... but NOOOOOO, no such moral compass present with this employee.

With no attendant to disperse the SLOWLY-accumulating inventory of vehicles (3 now, oooo) and this one sitting right in front of me I finally said WTF and jumped in we were OUTA THERE! The exit booths had acquired an additional attendant so the exit time had been cut in half and within 15 MORE minutes we finally exited the facility.

As previously mentioned, I HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH A BAD RENTAL EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE! It wasn't just a single failure, it was FAILURE AT EVERY TURN in the process (as documented above). Needless to say I WILL NEVER utilize DOLLAR or THRIFTY for my car rental needs EVER AGAIN! Traveling to Nashville this weekend and have ALREADY canceled my rental car. Uber and Lyft, here I come.

I paid in full and rented a car at dollar and picked up the car at New Hampshire airport where I was told about the xtra fee for gas and adding a second driver, but the representative never told us that by using their e-pass or sunpass, we will be charged an extra $15 administration fee for each told we used. I am completely disappointed and I considered this a rip off. Toll was only 19.50 and administration fee was 90. Can you imaging, I had some $1 toll and got charged an extra $15. I will never ever rent a car from them again. I tried to call but there was no answer. I rented from other rental businesses before and I never had such an outrageous fee. Insane! I hope this review help you decide to look somewhere else in turns of renting purposes.

Dollar can bite me
December 22, 2021

I give Dollar one star only because there is nothing lower. Rented out of Seattle over Christmas 2019 to share time with my family on San Juan Island. Not long after arriving on SJI, the vehicle developed engine issues. Dollar was responsive and tried troubleshooting, but no luck. They then towed a replacement vehicle to SJI! We were so grateful and on the verge of becoming loyal Dollar customers. That is until the letter came. Their claims department said I was responsible for "rodent" damage to the tune of $1800., $178 of which was for repairs to wiring and the rest for towing. I argued and argued with them and their letters got nastier and nastier, so I eventually paid, along with some choice suggestions as to what Dollar could do with itself. Don't rent from Dollar out of Seattle, whatever you do. It is considered one of the most rat infested cities in America. I've wondered how many other customers have had to pay up for similar damages.

Unfair business practices
November 24, 2021

Do not rent from Dollar. The counter associate basically lied about how the fuel package worked, saying they just top your tank off for 3.19/gallon and put your card on hold to pay for it. I returned my car with a full tank and they charged me a full tank of gas plus an additional 12 bucks in taxes and fees. Basically, they lie about how it works so they can steal your money. Maybe they get a kickback for every fuel package they sell? The customer service representative on the phone was unhelpful and refused to do anything. So my not so inexpensive rental ended up costing me 50 bucks more. Use a company with honest business practices.

I reserved a car fr 217.65 that I put on my credit card. I went to pick it up and the agent, wearing a mask and speaking very low, asked me to sign the "contract" that totaled $364.33. I had received an email upon reserving the car online that had an approx total of 304.00. I told the agent that I did not want any additional coverage, she said okay, I asked if the amount I was signing including EVERYTHING including the amount I paid online to reserve and was told yes.
I looked at my statement a few days later and noticed I had an additional charge of 364.33. I called and was told that that was the taxes/fees, airport service and extra service protection which I distinctly told her I did not want. I called and was told by two ppl that they could not reimburse me, asked me if I went to get the car fixed and if so, I could submit the receipt, also asked if I called roadside assistance. I asked to be reimbursed for either the cost of the car or the extra service protection and was told that once the contract was signed there was nothing they could do; we all know that they can, just won't do it.
I called Hertz the following day and was told the same thing.
Both calls I asked to speak to the supervisors manager and was told that they were the highest in the escalation process and there was no one else I could talk to.
I am beyond furious with both Dollar and Hertz. I usually rent from Budget who is ALWAYS so nice and helpful.
I cannot believe I am having to pay 581.00 for a compact car that was unsafe to drive and coverage that I truly believe I was scammed.

I confirmed my rental day and time the day before we needed it. Dollar Rental in Dallas didn't have a rental car available until 10 pm at night. Six hours after the scheduled time it was needed. We had a show to get to 2 hours after our flight landed. As a result we had to spend over $170 on an Uber to get us to the hotel, and to the show and back to the hotel. Then we were charged an extra $100 by Dollar Rental for a fee and a $12 toll 2 weeks after the trip. Do not trust this business. Once they have your card number, they'll continue to make withdrawals from your bank account.
