Not sure who makes the money off of the additional seat selection charge but I'm pretty sure it is not the airlines. I really hate this extra attempt on a charge(seat selection) that was once a free service.
I just spent 40 minutes on Google flights trying to buy 2 airline tickets but to no avail. Twice I entered all personal info (international flt) and twice I got the never ending "not responding" spinning thingy, so I had to ditch my efforts & time spent. I just went on Cheapoair and got it done in less that 10 minutes...and I am not a Google-hater, btw
