Even though I have had a pleasant experience listening to audible books in my car, I am thoroughly disgusted with this company. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. I tried to send my husband a book for his birthday, he never received an email notification, when I logged on and clicked on resend to resend the email notification nothing happened. I had to call customer service; they said that they were no longer doing gifts and that I couldn't purchase one. I said I already HAVE purchased one I have the notification email, and now I need to get the notification email sent to my husband... it took me over 30 minutes on the phone with two different customer service reps. It was a huge exercise in frustration for both my husband and me. I it is absolutely not worth the money. Especially when they don't let you keep your books that you have purchased if you cancel your membership. It's a rip off. Don't sign up!
The service itself is decent. I agree with other reviewers that it's quite expensive. Probably even more expensive than borrowing digital books. I was tempted to sign up for the 30 day trial but when I saw I had to input credit card information, I skipped it. Instead, with my Amazon Prime membership, I chose to listening to the free channels that supposedly a $60/year cost.
While the channels are interesting, Audible doesn't make access to listening very easy. First off, you can't listen to Audible on a Mac. They have complicated steps on how to stream your books through iTunes but doesn't seem to be available for channels. Second, the website offers nothing except links to download the app on various devices and platforms. Browsing on the website feels weird and awkward because you can't stream anything from there anyway. Thirdly, there is such thing as web-based streaming; Spotify has it. Amazon Music has it. Audible, for some reason, does not.
Therefore, you are forced to download an app onto your mobile device just to listen to stuff. So if you're on your desktop or laptop most of the times, and don't have your eyes glued to your phone all day, it's impossible to streamline your workflow because you have to use two devices. On top of that, apps nowadays are so untrustworthy; ready to spy on you, asking for access to everything, and probably even secretly phishing your information.
Again, the service itself is a fantastic idea. The user interface on the app is alright. However, you are so limited in terms of functionality and simple desktop availability. Without Amazon Prime for the free channels, the cost for simply listening to books is quite high and frankly, not worth my time or money. If you don't mind the price, or using only an app on your phone or tablet, Audible is for you. Also, watch out for the automated charge after 30 days. Although I'm aware of it, many people aren't.
Bought an audio book and went through the rigmarole of downloading Audible Manager and Audible download Manager. Then tried the download - loads of error messages that content has failed to download and have now given up
This site is unbelievable, not in a good way. Do Not give them any credit card info or sign up for a "30 day free trial", I tried it once and didn't like it so I never signed up. A few months later I found out they were charging me $14.95 per month for a service I never used. Trying to cancel my "subscription" has been like trying to win at the crap table. The worst thing about this whole thing is that they are an AMAZON affiliate and as such, I would have never expected to be cheated like this. I'm considering canceling my Prime membership, but there again, I found out that you have to wait until the annual membership expires before you can choose to not renew. Doesn't this guy Bezos have enough money that he doesn't need to be partnered up with a company that rips off his customers? What's happening to the world? I am thoroughly sick of the whole situation and will continue to try and cancel my "subscription" with Audible.com and I won't be dealing with Amazon in the future. Bezos is going to have to find someone else to cheat out of a few bucks!
Hi Rod,
We are sorry to hear about these unexpected charges! When enrolling into the 30 Day Free Trial, we mention that the membership continues at $14.95 but that it can be cancelled at any time. We are sorry if there was any confusion. If you still need assistance, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
Do not sign up.
Do not hand over your credit card details.
Be warned if you do and you cancel your membership they continue to take your money!
What a nightmare...
DO NOT USE YOUR 'FREE' TRIAL MEMBERSHIP. They will continue to charge you even if you cancel.
If I could I would give this site zero stars.
Wow... $20+ for audiobooks? That seems like a lot for a non physical copy of some writing. And wow they even have a service to connect your audiobook with a digital text but wait you have to freaking buy another copy of the book? So dumb. Not worth it
I ordered ONE thing off Amazon ONCE and have had monthly charges taken from my credit card from Audible Limited, which are impossible to stop. I DON'T EVEN OWN A KINDLE! They have basically just been stealing my money.
I was unknowingly being charged for an amazon membership for 5 months after I apparently signed up for a free trial. Only noticed now and was shocked, but their live chat customer service was very good and understanding and refunded me for 4 months of membership charges.
They don't even mention anywhere and start charging your credit card. They do this very slyly by making you log into your amazon account. This website is a cheat.
Stay away. I have spent two hours today on a chat with an audible representative. The first one cut me off half way through. The second one could not find my credits even though I gave the correct address attached to the account. I asked to speak to a manager but was refused. They absolutely refused to help me. Do not touch this company it is a scam. 24 credits (over £200) lost in total with no way of getting them back. Representatives very unhelpful such a shame as it is a great idea
Here is another way that consumers get screwed without effective government oversight. I scrutinize my CC account periodically, but somehow missed the $14.95/mo I was getting charged by Audible. I had apparently "signed up" for a 90-day trial in 5/16, and since I did not cancel, started getting billed in Aug. I missed these charges (probably because of the association with Amazon), but when I finally talked to a rep today - after being disconnected twice - to find out what it was all about, I finally got a refund. I will be watching for it. Too bad they have to go to these lengths of deception to make their business model work. At times, I have enjoyed very much listening to books, books that I may never have found the time or inclination to have read such as "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" or "War and Peace." But why not just buy the recording? Why the gimmicks? And especially why do they have to lure the unsuspecting public into signing up for these monthly charges? That Amazon partnered in this manner does not speak well of that company, either. I will be taking my business elsewhere, thank you very much.
I was a customer for about 8 years... spent hundreds of dollars and had a TON of credits unused in my account... my cc on file was lost and instead of contacting me for a continued membership Audible cancelled my account and stole all my credits (I think about 50 credits). They refuse to give back the credits and don't seem to care that I am out the money already spent. This has happened before as I've been a LONG time customer but in the past they have ALWAYS reinstated my account and issued back the credits. This is the tail end of my hour long conversation with their customer "service" rep AKA robot before he ended the chat: Kwame: I don't mean to rush you, but I havent heard back from you in more than 2 minutes. Is there anything further I may assist with? Me: YES GIVE ME BACK MY CREDITS Kwame: I am sorry Keri, as before we are unable to provide further insight or assistance with that request. Thank you for contacting Audible and have a great day! Kwame has left the conversation. SO DISAPPOINTED
The heavyhandedness of Audible's CRM strips all pleasure from listening experience. Their apps are sporadically functional and frustrating beyond reasonableness. Skip the free book and look for a less crappy alternative.
Somehow you get signed up thru Amazon and Audible starts charging you $14.95 a month. Amazon is culpable in this scam, maybe I said I'd try a free book, but never did, and certainly never gave Audible my credit card number, but AMAZON gave it to them. Must have been some very fine print when I said I'd like to try a FREE ebook. I did call and get a supervisor on line and she promptly refunded my money, 5 months of charges totally like $89. I cancelled my account. Hope the refund comes thru. I am going to contact AMAZON because i am furious at them too.
You get a free trial membership with one audiobook which worked perfectly. Then, when I started being charged I picked another book and I could never get it to work. I tried contacting them and they never responded. Very disappointing!
I had a credit for 3 books which I paid for monthly. I cancelled my monthly membership due to cost. I spoke with a rep personally and cancelled but what they failed to tell me is that when you cancel, you loose your credits that you paid for. I lost $45.00.
First of all, I trusted Customer representatives when they said that my account was canceled and I had 3 months to use my Credits, the 3 months ended and they charged my card without my authorization, I called immediately and reminded them that my account was cancelled, I was told that my account was going to be cancelled in 7 to 10 days, never explaining that my last Credit remaining was going to be stolen by them, I just called again to reclaim my last credit but the rep said " In essence" but I interrupted the rep " stop! In reality not in the essence bs you are stealing my credit, I paid for it, its mine it belongs to me!" but like all thieves they do get away with it, this is the norm on internet businesses because there is no "face to face" interaction, morals and honesty are crapped like manure, stinking every step they take and every dollar they steal ($14.95) Audible should be renamed to "Audible Sh! T I steal your money".
We should reach to Amazon customer service but I have a feeling that it will also fall in def ears, and hardened hearts.
The impurity of this business is now corrupted and tainted with crapped morals.
For the past 18 months, erroneous charges every month for $14.95 have appeared on my credit card totaling $269.10. Ever since these charges appeared, I have utilized audible.com chat, customer service, email and have transcripts admitting error and promising a fix. The charges keep coming. I spent four hours today of my vacation compiling credit card statements, identifying charges, scanning, and the follow-up hasn't even started. Additionally, I endured customer service reps with bad phone connections, minimal English skills, and multiple hour-long waits that still didn't result in speaking to a supervisor. I am supposed to be transferred to America if I request, but this didn't happen either.
Big corporations send armies of overseas workers earning $. 10/hour to perpetuate dishonest practices. No way to be during the holidays or any other time Jeff Bezos Don Katz taking advantage of working class people.
This is the worst program i have ever used for audio books. If you choose to cancel your membership with them they say you will lose the credits for audio books you have purchased already. So even though i paid Audible the money for my credits i will lose them if i cancel... I expected better out of amazon. Love prime HATE this.
