I'm a college freshman who has struggled with math my entire life. I'm in an intermediate algebra course- retaking it for the second time, actually. Both times, the classes have solely relied on ALEKS. Now, like I mentioned before, I've struggled with math since elementary school- but I have never once finished with an F- until ALEKS. I understand with Covid still going on, colleges are opting for more online classes, which is cool and all--but honestly, this website is built for lazy-a$$ "professors" who don't even do the bare MINIMUM to communicate with their students, leaving God-awful ALEKS to "teach" them. I would have signed up for a synchronous, in person math course, but for the algebra class I'm currently retaking, IT WASN'T AN OPTION- UGHH! I've cried tears of frustration so. Many. Times. ALEK's way of teaching is convoluted, confusing, sometimes they flat out don't even explain the exact way they got to an answer? Terrible way to learn math, at least for me. I can't believe I'm paying full tuition for this sh*t, thinking about it too hard makes my blood boil, man. I haven't had to contact my counselor in months, but that's about to change- thanks, ALEKs!
I $#*!ing hate this website. That's it, I'm done. It's so goddamn painful and inconvenient to use that it makes driving a car with no limbs look easy. Every time I check my questions, and it kicks me back to the beginning, it's like I'm being footed in my intestines by the Devil.
If I could give it a -5 star, I would. But the scale only goes to 1 for some reason. It doesn't really teach you the concepts, the explanations are muddy at best, and the AI is like GLaDOS torturing you in her testing chambers with endless trials and tasks. I've sunk countless hours into repeating this Sisyphean task just for that sweet moment of getting green-lighted like $#*!ing Gatsby on the docks.
$#*! you, ALEKS, I hope you disappear from public memory as soon as the lockdown is lifted. I hope you're buried in the dark annals of history and never mentioned again. I'd rather peel myself with a potato peeler than spend another minute on this godforsaken site. This site is the digital equivalence of death by a thousand cuts.
Never ever use ALEKS, if your professor requires you to sign up for this for a class, just $#*!ing ditch that course and run from that psycho.
Its as if some one sat at their desk and thought "how could i ruin some ones life and academic career today?" this thing is a piece of garbage if you get something it just says which question is wrong and wont even try and help you. The explanations are worse because it goes through the whole problem instead of actually telling you what you did wrong so you have to look through the entire thing in order to understand. Plus i have to do 20 OF THESE kids have problems doing 10. Plus when says i'm wrong i get mad which makes me worse at math. This program is a piece of absolute trash. DO NOT GET FOR SCHOOLS.
ALEKs was truly a miserable experience. The program uses negative reinforcement in the worst ways possible. As someone who has struggled with mental health, depression, and anxiety, I can honestly say this class was problematic for my health. The program barely explains any of the concepts, and I basically had to google anything I couldn't figure out easily on my own. Getting questions wrong and being sent backwards feels terrible and so discouraging, I began to skip through questions I didn't know until I would get one similar to one i got right, this way I basically only had to learn one type of problem for a topic and ignore the others so I wouldn't lose my previous correct answers. The knowledge checks loom on your mind as another way you will be sent backwards to redo stuff you had already completed. You get no partial credit, you can do everything right but if you forget a negative sign you're going backwards. I really thought I was alone in my feelings for this program but please just google search "ALEKs reviews" and i think the third link I saw had 1,200 reviews saying all the same things I felt, it was very satisfying to see this when I finally looked it up as I was not the only one to feel this way. I think you should strongly reconsider using this program or at least do some more research about how people feel about it. I am lucky in that most of the stuff in my class was review, I went to a competitive high school and had learned all of this years prior but I often wondered while taking this class how someone with little knowledge of these concepts would fare in this class. I apologize for the rant and I am sure it seems a bit dramatic but I would not wish an ALEKS class on my worst enemies, it has been an incredibly frustrating semester not only for me but for my partner as well because of this programs very real negative impacts on my mental health. I think the only valuable insight I got from this program was a crash course in what not to do when it comes to UX/UI.
My professor has us work on ALEKS assignments prior to learning about these topics in class. There is no way to learn material other than get practice problems wrong and look at the solution (which, depending on the assignment, isn't always an option). The solutions are wordy yet neglect to explain the conceptual topics they are trying to teach, and instead offer arbitrary problem solving processes that make no logical sense to students who don't already know the material. In terms of organization, I have not been able to find a complete list/syllabus of assignments anywhere on the ALEKS website; the only thing the website shows me is the due date of the next upcoming assignment. This is incredibly frustrating for me because I have occasionally missed assignments, but I have a difficult time finding the assignment when I go back and look for it in order to learn the material in it (even if I am not graded for it). When I miss a practice assignment, I have to go straight to the homework assignment and cannot go back and learn the material first. I am a hardworking student, but I do not understand how anyone is supposed to genuinely learn from this website.
Aleks sucks. It doesn't teach you anything. It only makes everything harder. The Explanations don't even help. Aleks is f****** sh*t. I don't recommend it at all. Aleks has even caused people to self-harm which is terrible and heartbreaking. Aleks does not help, the only thing it does do is make you frustrated and angry.
Poor customer service, engineers don't know how to do their job and the learning material itself is poorly worded, along with poor technical running of the system. It is inaccurate and make for a frustrating and counterintuitive learning environment
I understand the concept of punishing students for getting something wrong as it would motivate them to get it right so they can move on to the next skill. But do you know how much stress that inflicts on somebody?
I commend ALEKS on forcing students to actually learn Math skills by way of repetition. But like I said before, it's stress-inducing.
This is by far the worst learning program that I have EVER used! IT is overly picky, the answers need to what the site wants and if your not a visual learner GOOD LUCK! Absolutely terrible and would not recommend at all. In the photo look at the points I gave and the line it drew and then look at the correct answer.
A little about me: I got my first bachelor's degree in 2011 on a full tuition academic scholarship and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. I even taught a few college classes of my own in the 2010s as an adjunct.
In 2020, I thought I'd go back to school for a career change, and at $700/credit, I expected a decent quality of education. Instead, I found that professors at my school rely on this garbage piece of software instead of actually teaching. Zero lectures, but hours and hours of this poorly-written junk website attempting to "teach" chemistry by repeatedly punishing students for wrong answers, and then forcing them to change topics as soon as they start getting it.
I withdrew from my whole program mid-semester because I was just at my breaking point - and I was a straight A student! No regrets, and it's all because of ALEKS.
ALEKS does not teach. It's a torture device and an easy way for professors to collect a paycheck while never recording a single lecture. Pure academic laziness disguised under the marketing term of AI, which it absolutely is not. If I'm going to spend $200,000 on a degree, I expect a professor, not some automated system that can't even teach as well as Khan Academy.
Students, boycott this if you care about the quality of the education you'll be paying off for the rest of your life. Educators, do your job and teach your classes.
I hate this $#*!1ng site so much oh my god please. Everything about it is awful and i would rather get my organs ripped out and sucked into a factory machine than do any more of the god awful topics and the knowledge checks make me want to rip my eyeballs out. I am a student in highschool and i have to do 10 topics every week and i am truly. Exhausted. The explanations are trash and the same method of doing problems and getting one wrong and doing 5 more is just awful and the most depressing thing i have ever experienced. The only thing i am looking forward to after HS is never having to type aleks into my searchbar ever again.
If you have aids and don't have to do Aleks. I'm am jealous. You should be grateful your gonna die at 20. If I had a gun with 2 bullets and I was in a room with Hitler, The creator of Aleks and Stalin, I would shoot the creator of Aleks twice. This website causes cancer and permanent brain damage. If you make an account on this website you will want to overdose on milk. This app should have some symptoms listed in the TOS. Those symptoms should be: Aids, Suicidal Thoughts, Virginity, Depression, Brain Loss, and much more. I would rather remove my ribs so that I can suck on my own #&$%. Don't get this app. Ever. You will regret it.
No technical support at all
Not good explanations for questions
Horrible programming which make some questions impossible to answer
(saying that your answer was incorrect even if the answer was actually correct)
Can cause working a lot for answering 1 topic
TAKING TONNS IF TIME
Okay so i have to do this for school. I have to do geometry. The problem is it wont let me! Its making me do hours and hours of review for stuff i did a long time ago and its so frustrating! The knowledge checks dont do anything either. Ive been doing this my entire spring break and im not done. Please let me say which grade im in and then it recommends that subject so i can finish this stupid geometry!
I am a dual-enrolled student that uses Aleks for dummy algebra. Math has always been problematic for me specifically because I always struggle to understand formulas and the complexity of math strategies. Mathematics has never made any sense to me which is why I am taking intermediate algebra instead of precalculus/calculus or trigonometry. From the looks of Aleks, I thought that I would actually learn from this site, but I was wrong, unfortunately. With this program, you do not have access to detailed demonstrations. The "explanation" button just displays a brief once-over of the problem and its' solution. I am grateful that I am at least able to view answers, but this website still isn't any better than an online calculator. I guess the developers of this platform expect students to understand topics after only seeing a 3 sentence "explanation". Of a math problem that actually involves multiple steps that should be thoroughly emphasized.
Additionally, for some reason, the website continues to automatically put me back on topics that I have already completed. I finished topics 1,1a, 2, and about 70% of 3. However, when I logged in, the "start my path" in the home section was set on topic 2. It took me hours of hard work to pass these topics and all of a sudden I was pushed back? I started working on the topics and the numbers seemed to just start over. It went from 240 topics left to 216 topics left and then after logging back into the system, I was set at 240 again. It is so aggravating that I'm not progressing properly in the course. I have completed the same assignments over and over again because the website is not registering all of the work that I did. According to my progress, I haven't even started on topic 3 which is totally untrue, I was almost finished with topic 3 what the hell?
The price of an Aleks subscription is 80$+ for a limited time and even more expensive if you purchase the Aleks code from a campus. If anyone is paying that ridiculous amount for an education program designed to help students achieve goals and actually succeed, then that's what they better $#*!ing receive. It is a huge rip-off to pay that much money for a service that doesn't even work and does the bare minimum for its users. I highly suggest for anyone who is looking for any type of learning website to avoid using Aleks. I put in way too much work, time and effort just to get regressed out of nowhere.
I must say that in all of my time using aleks, I hate it, and I've never really learned anything from it. I'm pretty sure Satan made this dumb program... I don't think that anyone, not even Karen deserves this kind of treatment. The knowledge checks are practically worthless, not ever bumping you up, and only skipping you down. At this point, I enjoyed the old math books more than this, and trust me, they were dumb. I wish that Aleks could actually teach kids instead of rotting their minds. And, I've asked all my friends (the whole school) and everyone agrees that this program is only capable of rotting young minds, and not even letting the little knowledge that it has bestowed upon us stick. I don't think I've ever learned anything from this crap, and I never will. In math that is supposed to be super hard, it asked me what 159+69 was. WHAT THE CRAP?!?!?!?! The people who designed this "program" were actually inventing a torture method.
ALEKS SUCKS!
P.S. I'm suing if my grandkids or kids have to suffer through this, I'll pull them out of school if that's what it takes.
P. P.S. Please have an Aleks free day, as it's the only way to live properly.
Edit: I have even done topics where even people who are math teachers claim that the actual answer is wrong, so there is no way to pass the topic! It also has a whole bunch of things that are going to be super irrelevant in life. Just please don't get this!
It shows kids how the world works before they should learn it. It tells them that trying does not matter and you can only win to survive. Also its really laggy and it gives wrong answers sometimes.
If $#*!ing sucks $#*! SCK MY BALLS FUKCING UASIFASUIFA TRASH $#*!. IT SO GARBAGE GO DRAG GLASS ON BROKEN $#*!
Answer: Because the ALEKS program is literal hell and we people are just showing our hatred for it
Answer: Most likely.
Answer: Yes deal with it
Answer: Because people want to commit suicide in an original way, and ALEKS is the best way.
Answer: I don't think so but believe me a class action suit would be an improvement
Answer: I paid over $150 for this sumbi**h, I expect it to work
Answer: No i do not think the website owner has issued one but I think the feelings for aleks would be "down the toilet"
Answer: I realize this reply is very late but in case for anyone who needs it: -Let's say you're learning how to use long division. They have 3 questions in it. You master the first one, then go on to the next one. You get the second one wrong, guess what? They punish you and take back your first answer so now you have to answer it again. -How fun! And don't forget the useless knowledge checks!
