Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

Apartment hosted by Julia at ul. Warszawska 5A, Modlin, Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki, Poland does not allow guests to:
1. Sleep with open bedroom doors
2. To stink with alcohol (as per exact words of the owners)
3. To make any sounds by voice (even with medical condition)
4. To walk around apartment (contrary to their welcoming message)
5. To wake up when you wish to wake up.
6. To check in "late" (after 9 PM)
7. To check out after 10 AM (respected but unusually early).
Otherwise you will be disturbed and approached by the owner with dog who will let her dog "kiss" you early in the morning in order to wake you up and ask you to leave andf she will cancel any other nights at her apartment you may have booked.
Airbnb does not protect the homeowner. It appears they are main focus is just to rent for either side, and if there is a problem, they do not follow through. They also do not collect a deposit, so you're really gambling when allowing people to stay without a deposit collected up front. I had 2 guests cause damage in my home. The first one we were able to get a a little compensation, but the second nothing. Airbnb blamed it on me saying I did not submit appropriate documentation in time which is completely false. I did exactly what the Airbnb representative told me to do the day the incident happened. I will be canceling my account with them because my investment is too important to take a risk by allowing Airbnb to book my home, collect their fees and hope for the best.
Be aware that Airbnb has not safety policy in place to protect renters form scam and fraud. Airbnb doesn't inspect the property, and does not verify that the hosts have no criminal records!
I booked a staying in New Brunswick in Nj, and at my arrival the situation was tragic, nothing like shown on pictures, not a living room with shared space it was more a junk room with a bed in a corner, No Ac there were over 100F in the house, the kitchen was dirty, floor and furniture were dirty and gross, mice, and very unwelcoming place. I got sick for the heat, and Airbnb is telling me that without a picture will not be able to do anything. The area was highly unsafe, and hots started to extort me for money, This wasn't only an unhealthy situation it was unsafe. I was granted only $150n coupon for the inconvenience, but nothing has been done for a safety issue with this listing. I'm highly disappointed because I often travel alone and I felt completely abused.
I made a "reservation" only to find out it was pending a response from the owner. I arrived to the location, but no confirmation= nowhere to stay. I tried to get a hotel in the meantime with no luck. And I can't cancel my ABnB reservation for fear of losing $500 for cancelling! This is terrible!
Tried multiple attempts to book multiple properties without success. Each time it would indicate open availability for the dates we wanted, then upon checkout would state the property was not available. The website and mobile app are confusing, frustrating, and poorly done. Tried to call customer service, no luck there either. We finally gave up and booked with another company.
As long as everything goes exactly according to plan (which is almost NEVER) do NOT use airbnb. They have the absolute worst customer service and I am amazed they are able to do business. Never will I use them again. Homeaway and vrbo have my business from now on!
Called into the support with regards to an issue with a reservation. The case manager, of whom I manage to get the hold of 12 hours after the initial contact and after 3 calls told me "we have a more important case to deal with at the moment, we will call you back when we can". Disgusting support which whos a remarkable lack of care of their customers.
I usually love Airbnb for the many different types of spaces and rooms they offer. So when deciding to go to Chicago it wasn't hard to decide who I'd be booking with! Unfortunately I should've bought twice, my booking was cancelled and I didn't find out until the day of travel. I went to rebook and my verification failed and booking was cancelled though I was verified from previous bookings. I outreaches and spoke with someone who said it would be released in 5-15 days but I'd still have to rebook a new room. I ended up paying 420 dollars to the company. Just to make sure I had a place to rest my head. I received no email confirmations for the booking or refund claim. I realized the email address was wrong and reached out to let them know. I spoke to 4 different people in 5 days and no one was able to help or confirm my refund.
For the company to be so big and all over the world I am very disappointed in how all god has been handled
I rented an apartment in Reykjavik, Iceland for 3 nights. The host had nothing but positive reviews and advertising a "quiet residential neighborhood". From the moment we unlocked the door, there was construction noise from a nearby street (jackhammering) all day. When that finally stopped, the upstairs neighbors started banging all night as if they had their own construction site going on upstairs. I tried to let it go the first night and didn't say anything. Then it happened again the second night until 3am. Then again the 3rd night when I finally said something at midnight. The host didn't take any responsibility and Airbnb asked me for "documentation". Then I wrote a negative review about the noise and they never posted it. It's rigged to make them money and avoid negative reviews. Beware! I'll never use Airbnb again.
I am very unhappy with the fact that Airbnb allows their hosts to cancel at 9pm the night before our reservation. I made our reservation 2 weeks in advance at a North Carolina beach for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in. Our host cancelled the night before leaving us struggling to find another place to stay because Airbnb ALSO couldn't find another host anywhere in the area to move our reservation to. It is already hard enough to get reservations at the beach for a wedding during the middle of the summer (this was the weekend of July 12th) but to be cancelled on and having to spend twice as much was very upsetting and uncalled for. I had no choice and my kids ended up being miserable too because the hotel was almost an hour away from the beach and where the wedding location was. Very unhappy and will never use again.
I had only had good experiences with airbnb until this spring. A host in Seattle mis-represented her property as a studio in a house, and it turned out to be a glorified room with paper thin walls, extremely loud people staying in other parts of the house, and mold that made my allergies even worse. I had to cancel after one night, and offered to pay an extra night plus any cancelation fees. She already had my money for the entire month. After no reply from her, I got airbnb involved. I reasonable asked for two thirds of my money back. At first, they responded and said they were looking into it, but after follow-up calls/emails, nothing more from them. I would never use airbnb again!
BEWARE. BEWARE. BEWARE. We tried to book a place in Los Angeles for my birthday only to have my account suddenly deactivated. No explanation, sketchy customer service reps clearly from a different country hung up on me. Emailed me saying they reserve the right to deactivate my account. This was supposed to be a fun trip, had to make other lodging arrangements that turned out to be great. Try a bed & breakfast or hotel, save yourself the heartache. This company won't be around for too much longer. JUST WAIT...
This was our first AirB&B experience and the property not as advertised. It was advertised as the entire house with back yard, deck, bbq, hot tub, and pet friendly in San Diego, All of the space was shared. Owner residence attached and backyard amenities shared. Pictures that indicate this information are not provided on listing. The Host, Aaron, showed lack of responsibility by not informing owner about our rental requirements made prior to reserving and showed no willingness to address our rental concerns. Owner planned a 4 hour event inviting guests and dogs in the shared backyard without regard to our presence. We were compelled to leave due to lack of respect for our reservation and requested private space. Neither host or AirBnB assisted us in this debacle. We were given minimal refund and required to find a new location on our own. Spent an entire day without a place to stay for our family (several who flew to SD for this vacation), and our two dogs. Paid service fees twice. Lost our 7 day discount. Paid cleaning fees for a house with mildew and urine smell, along with body odor from unclean comforter and mattress cover in the main bedroom. Not only do advise staying clear of this listing, we do not recommend AirBnB due to lack of customer support.
Worst customer service ever. After 21 days calling again and again and leaving a dozen messages still AIRBNB has not refunded my money. While my host had approved a refund 20 days ago.
Horrible experience. I first booked with Heather in Frederick Md, a "superhost". She declined me cause I booked through my wife's account even though I provided my own license and photo and sent her a message explaining that it was me staying and not my wife. She accepted my reservation and took my money and then declined me so now she gets an interest free loan from me while my money was taken instantly, the refund process is 15 days before I get it back. Second time I tried to book, I created my own account, again providing my license and a photo of myself and a brief description of me. Heidi in Winchester VA. At least didn't take my money first like Heather did but she declined me because I have no reviews as I am new to this site. How am I supposed to get reviews if no one will book me? Then she goes on to say that a previous customer is extending their stay and the changes are pending. That's poor business on the part of AirB&B if I could book a date that is "pending". Also, she was concerned too about me cause her husband works nights and she has 2 small kids. Maybe being a host with no husband around and 2 small kids isn't the best idea if you worry about who you are renting a room too. I guess overall, the money is worth the risk to her and her 2 small kids except in my case. Maybe I should have provided a background check too...
Airbnb let an 18 year old rent my home. This kids proceeded to throw a party and trash our lovely home causing $15,000 in damages! He also stole property and vandalized the neighborhood with red spray paint. Airbnb had no intention of helping. They made us jump through hoops for weeks and they refused to speak with us by phone. We had a police report, over 100 photos, estimates from contractors and plenty of proof. Airbnb tried to deny most of the documents we submitted because they didn't like the photo format. They refused to accept a Home Depot quote because it was sent to us by email. They created one road block after another for weeks, in an attempt to get us to give up. However, we pressed on and did everything they asked us to. In the end, they agreed on the damage but they only offered us $2500, take it-or leave it. They provided no explanation as to how they came up with that number. Then they shut off communication with us entirely. Obviously the 1million dollar host guarantee they advertise is a complete lie. What a scam! The numbers are obvious. There's no way we can risk our home to Airbnb renters. If someone burned it down, they won't pay! So we had no choice but to pull our house off the platform in the peak rental season leaving dozens of future guests left without a home for their beach vacation. Do NOT trust Airbnb! They are a horrible, dishonest, criminal organization with the worst service you can possibly imagine. BEWARE!
$1500 was charged to my credit card under a fake reservation. Airbnb reversed it and told me to change my password. A check on my account history showed hacker logins from China, not only around the time of the fake reservation, but also at the time of the password change. I could not take down my payment info as it was associated with a current booking. No useful help from their support desk so far despite lots of wasted time. I've been working from secure home wifi with active virus protection.
Appalling customer service. You are expected to call the US from everywhere else in the world.
In addition when I had a problem and needed the move accommodation (apartment was in the middle of a construction site starting at 6am but no mention in the listing) I was put on hold for 30 mins and then told someone would contact me but 8 hours later nothing.
Quite clearly this is an organisation led by profit not customer service.
I will not be booking again with AirBnB and will strongly advise anyone else to avoid it. At least hotels are reliable, consistent, you know the bed won't be impossible to sleep in, the paint won't be peeling off the ceiling, and in this case drilling at 6am - at least a reputable hotel would warn you.
Hi all,
I want to tell you a bad experience I had with airbnb. I was in Portland I did a reservation through Airbnb. They assigned a representative to guide me for payment, they are not charging you in app. There are designated ATMs you can do payment by providing Payment Order Number. While that rep navigates me trough process rudely he swore at me. Just because I told him I was at the spot and I called him. He is like come and suck my $#*!!. The worst rep and the awful service by airbnb. I will never and ever stay there.
Any customer service call takes an hour of wait time. Must be called back,. They dont have answers untill days later. I have had bad service. Took days to verify host had a licence to host in a business location. Host not obligated to message or call back. When checking in found homeless squatter and it takes days to get a refund, and several long wait times between more than 5 calls per issue
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
