I don't see an option for 0 stars. Definitely shop for your books directly from a bookseller. This company operates in the manner of a broker, and if something doesn't go correctly, do not look to them for assistance, resolution, refund, or common courtesy, and absolutely, no telephone communication. After I finally received a tracking number from the actual bookseller, AbeBooks had to asked ME for it. No follow up on sales or satisfaction, and now I see why.
I rarely write a poor review of a company, as most companies do not operate or treat their customers as poorly as this company does. Absolutely exasperated from dealing with them.
I purchased a book on algae taxonomy that has been out of print for 50 years. The book I received came from the Library of Congress surplus inventory. It was in pristine condition, and inside the book cover, I found a note from the author. I couldn't be more satisfied. The bookseller was Boards & Wraps.
I purchased a book online from AbeBooks and paid a large shipping fee; and when I inquired about the status of my book, I was told that they ship media mail which is a cheap long delay shipping method offered by USPS. Please, there are better sites to buy your new or used books that will arrive within 3-5 business days. Unless you can wait 30 days, don't do it.
After a long delay they sent me a wrong title book. And they don't process refund. I received an email that I should mail the received book with a traceable shipping method and the seller will only initiate the refund IF they receive the book. It's stealing. When you charge people $10 and then after a month, you send them a $1 book and don't accept to refund.
My total order was confirmed for one price but when I checked my bank statement an extra $21 was taken out by Abebooks. I talked to a representative at the bank to make sure it wasn't something done on their end. All fingers pointed to Abebooks. Representitives at Abebooks only gave me the runaround. I'm done with them.
I wanted to buy a book it was like $24, so I got it. Shipping and handling was like $7. No problem. A few days later I get an email my order is on hold because they have added "extra charges" I need to pay. $98 in extra charges! Will not be going to them again!
I'm a graduate student, and I always buy used books because I want to save money. Usually I buy from Ebay but this time I decided to buy from this AbeBooks and it was a terrible mistake. First of all, estimated delivery time is 24 days, even I live in Colorado and seller was located in Illinois. I said fine I can wait because I really needed that book. After the purchase they gave me a trucking number which was showing me that my book still in the process of being picked up by USPS for 2 weeks! It took them 14 days to drop my book to USPS office. I said ok. Then in 20 days it's allegedly arrived to my local USPS office and disappeared. I agree that it's a fault of USPS for not delivering to my address. But the saddest part is that I had to wait a whole week to start my refund initiating (even though USPS gave me an approval document about refund claim) because it's written in THEIR "AbeBooks" policy and seller had never responded to my questions. AbeBooks told me to wait an answer for 3 days from the Seller who of course didn't send me anything. And after those 3 days, AbeBooks told me wait another 8 calendar days to start refund initiation process. And only today 5/3/2019 they initiated refund and they told me to wait 3 business days to get my money into my account. I'm screaming. What a waste of my time! I purchased my book 4/4/2019 and today is 5/03/2019. A whole month for nothing. And I'm still waiting my money. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER purchase anything from this site.
This was the first time I ordered a book from Abebook.com but I had a terrible experience. I ordered the book on March 15th and it was supposed to be delivered by April 12th. I followed up on April 15th to know the tracking number but it was told the book do not have a tracking number. I waited for 3 more weeks after the estimated delivery date but the book never arrived.
I updated my review from one to three stars because they were quick to refund my card after canceling my order. I ordered from them because I'm in Pensacola, FL and they're in N Miami Beach, FL. It took 2 days to confirm my order and at that time, they then told me that the book was estimated to be delivered on May 11. Three weeks! I also ordered from them because of their 4 1/2 star rating through bookscouter.com. Had I known that it would take this long for delivery, I would have ordered the book from a pleothra of other dealers. My son wanted this book before our trip coming up. Why almost three weeks from N Miami to Pensacola? That being said, I went on Amazon and found the book, same price. I got an amazing offer to join Amazon Prime and with that came free one day shipping. I ordered the book yesterday morning. It will be here today. Although I comment Abe Books for refunding my card immediately, I have to ask myself how they will stay in business with other places out there that exceed expectations of customers?
Purchased two books. (one for close to $100.00) Never received the books. Was given fraudulent tracking numbers. Had to cancel my credit card due to fear that they would tamper with it. They lied from start to finish. Never got the books. Never got a refund. I had to pursue a refund via Visa debit fraud department. Stay clear of these very dishonest fraudsters.
Not only did we not get the book, card was compromised because of the site, card number was cloned and used at a liquor store and now can't get money returned! STAY AWAY!
On March 7 I ordered a book from an ABE book seller, Ergodebooks in Texas for 38.80 plus 3.99 shipping and handling. The book was paid for and ABE acknowledged the sale. Ergodebooks was paid, then nothing. Two weeks later after I contacted them, they said the book was lost in shipping (no tracking number provided) and asked if I wanted a replacement if available I said yes. Sorry it's not available here's your 38.80 back and four days later the book I purchased is listed on ABE books priced $450 higher. I complained to ABE Books, nothing, they circled the wagons, different person giving a generic robo-response every time. They want their monthly fees from the book sellers and couldn't care less about honesty and integrity. Approach with extreme caution or avoid. Awful platform! Avoid ABE and especially Ergodebooks!
Ordered a book because they said they could get it to me by the 19th.
After the order, they changed the delivery date to later than the 19th.
They said they would send me a tracking number, too.
They never sent the tracking number.
The book never came.
They said I could ask for a refund if it missed the promised date.
I did and they then said I had to wait several more days.
Then they said they issued the refund - for an amount less than I had paid.!
And, to make matters worse, the refund still has not posted. Wonder if it ever will.
When I asked them to issue a full refund, I got a response simply saying they'd checked their records, which indicate they gave me a refund already.
I have used ABE for about ten years. There are a considerable number of corporate sellers on the site, but that's true, unfortunately, of all sites these days. I try to stick with small business sellers. Keeping communication open is a good idea, which is true with any book seller.
I enjoy shopping on ABEBooks. I recommend it.
I purchased through one of their booksellers, A Team Books, and the access code for the textbook was $30 more than what the actual code sells for on the educational site. Tried to contact them to return the code since it had not been rubbed off, NO response. AVOID AbeBooks at all costs.
Ordered a textbook for a course. Received e-mail that order was processed. Next day e-mail that book was shipped. Tracking information said USPS waiting for item and that was it for three weeks. Contacted seller, stated that they had a problem with shipper and that the book would still arrive within 14 business days. Those days came and went and still no book. Seller said that they would update tracking information within 24 hours. Never happened. Only after several attempts, seller issued refund. Complete waste of time and money. Look elsewhere
I guess I should have looked at this site prior to ordering. Choose a seller (Hippo Books in Toledo) that was nearby and upgraded shipping. Three weeks later, still no book. The Toledo store can't even understand that I have asked for a refund (all of $6) and are determined to still send it. Whatever.
Poor customer service. Worst online book store ever. Ordered a book Jan 15,2019 payed extra $48 to have it shipped faster still no book no tracking info no response fr book seller... People stay away.

I ordered a textbook for my University course. It took 3 weeks to arrive and when it arrived, I was very disappointed that it was a used book. I paid three time the original book price, and very high delivery cost. AND received a USED book when I ordered a NEW book and the invoice says NEW book. I sent my email to complain, and now I have a few options. Sending back the book is not an option as I am in the middle of the course already, and I cannot wait for another copy to ship. Now, I searched again, there are used copies that are available for USD $2 to $5... and I paid $ 42. The published price is $ 14.95
Seller is offering partial refund to keep the book or full refund if I return the book or they will find me a replacement copy. Let's see what will happen.

Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
