UNBELIEVABLE! I recently mailed them an $80 college textbook that I had just finished using because they quoted me a buyback price of $42.65. I recently received an email from them stating that "the book was not an authorized copy" and they are "seizing it" and will NOT issue my payment or return MY book back to me. SERIOUSLY?! It is MY book... I mailed it to you in good faith that you were sending me a check for it. Literally they could turn around and resell my book for a huge profit... clever little scam GrrRRRrrrrrrr
Sadly I didn't check these guys out very well. Same story as most. I ordered 9/4 estimated delivery 9/26 and did not come. Waited a few days still nothing contacted seller several times (Irish Booksellers) no response. Contacted Abebooks through online because they have no phone number to call. Still nothing. Initiated return now 8 days later. I CALLED MY BANK TO FILE A DISPUTE!
Don't for a moment think that the shipping times you are given at the time of ordering is real. It's a joke. Typically, this is called false advertising; at AbeBooks, I have a feeling, it's called business practice. Never again.
I ordered a textbook with expected delivery in 5-8 business days. After 12 business days passed, I called AbeBooks - no one is available on the weekend. I submitted an online claim - their website claimed they would reply within 2 business days, however, they replied in 4 business days. Their email response stated the "USPS lost the book in transit," and they would refund my purchase price (obviously - but that doesn't help I'm overdue needing the book for class). A follow-up email from AbeBooks claimed the reason for return was "bookseller accepted order in error." I'm not sure why their rationale changed, but it adds to my perception of their untrustworthyness - I will not be ordering from AbeBooks again.
So, Abebooks uses a bunch of different vendors and stores to find you what you are looking for, which is wonderful. Most of the complaints I see are about people buying from shady vendors. I bought two books, but researched who I was buying from before doing so. I recommend doing the same. It's a small amount of footwork done to ensure you're buying from a quality vendor. Both of my books arrived ahead of schedule, with no issues. Just save yourself some hassle and do a little research about who you're buying from. With that being said, if you're willing to take the extra step, Abebooks is pretty awesome
I ordered a book for school that in the description said it came with a access code. It did not. I went through the refund process and this was the nightmare. I sent an email to abebooks trying to start the process. I did not hear from them for 3 days. Then, they had to email the bookstore that contracting the sell out to. Let's just say it's been 3 weeks and I didn't even get my entire refund back. NIGHTMARE!
I ordered the fiction book in English from the site Abebooks to Kazakhstan. Then they didn't remind me that this book is not availability. Then after two days I asked my track number and I wrote how to track my book. But no answer. There was a template answer: The bookseller is unresponsive... like that. And today after 18 days they wrote me that book will not come and we are so sorry, and they processed me a refund. I work in a library, and today I had to restore this book. That's why, be careful, if you order this book you will get no feedback only a template message: "So sorry the bookseller is unresponsive", P I didn't get any right messages to my question. Every sentence in the template messages began with "SORRY". That is the fault all of you. You can't work with a bookseller even you can't get messages for 18 days. Abebooks team you are all unresponsive, even you can't send a message by your words, it means that you don't care about your clients, and maybe you will get no books like me.
I purchased a book on line in July from my home in Pennsylvania and the book was sent to my school in Virginia. I returned to school in September and book was in my mailbox. That class was cancelled and I tried to return the $145 book and AbeBooks said I could not return it because it was 14 day after I purchased it. They were not willing to work with me, as a college student with limited funds this put a big dent in my book budget for this school year
Purchased an overpriced book on Abebooks through their vendor Lost Books in Austin Texas and almost 3 weeks after shipping confirmation the book still had not arrived. I contacted seller and they claimed they could not find the book and offered to either keep my money and put me on a list if the should by chance come across the book or refund the purchase. After some digging I found this seller was trying to resell the book I purchased (the new listing has the EXACT SAME inventory number as my order) for 5x the price I originally paid for it. I contacted Abebooks to dispute this fraud by their seller only to get a generic email saying to contact seller. HUH? I did some deep searching online for customer support phone number as they do not publicize it on their website to get a recording to call back during business hours, I called well with in their business hours. Unfortunately I still needed the book so I found another seller selling a new copy of the book for double what I paid for the used book and purchased from ABC Books in Missouri. Four days later this seller sends me an email asking for $30 extra for heavy book shipping, mind you the book only weighs 8oz. Reluctantly I paid the extra processing only to have Abebooks double charge my credit card, cost of the book again plus the $30. The charge was declined and they canceled my order without being able to contact them on their error. I immediately contacted the seller to let them know of the error on Abe's part and a week later I still have no response from seller or Abebooks. Do not waste your time or money on Abebooks, Lost Books or ABC Books.
I ordered four books. Two came without incident although it took nearly two weeks for them to get to me. One book never arrived. The shipping label was created but the item was never delivered to USPS. The last book never came, they sent a similar book, not the book I ordered.
I received a code from them that I never got to use and I contact them and they've been giving me excuses after excuse. I suggest to try another place that does better business than this place.
Make sure you are certain about the book you are wanting. They sell books from other vendors and if you need a return, it isn't going to happen.
LAME
Don't expect the image of the book you buy to match the book you receive. Working with customer support was miserable for me, and more time consuming and troubles than its worth. Never again will I go through AbeBooks. Better off buying directly from a seller like Thriftbooks without going through AbeBooks. Needless to say, I won't do business with or recommend AbeBooks.
I hope this is helpful to otherwise and saves you from disappointment.
WORST CUSTOMER CARE... TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE... I THINK COMPLETELY FRAUDULENT & FAKE ONLINE BOOKS BUSINESS IDEA...
Ordered book on 8/9 - received this message on 8/13 (4 days later!):
I'm very sorry about this, but the warehouse is unable to find your
Order on the shelf where it should be. It was likely miss-shelved, so
We've searched adjacent shelves but still can't find it. This kind of
Problem is very rare, but our workers stock thousands of products per
Day, and they do make mistakes on occasion.
Unfortunately, I don't have a comparable copy of the order available
To your order. If any funds were being held for this order they should
Be released soon. You should receive an email confirming this shortly.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Sincerely,
Athena
No customer service whatsoever from abebooks - no support for customers. IRISH BOOKSELLERS rip off. I specifically emailed confirming a book order to which they replied yes- only then to send out the complete wrong book that was worth nothing next to what I actually purchased. They stopped returning my emails and then ABEBOOKS WOULD NOT SETTLE THE DISPUTE even after I spent more money to return the incorrect book. Booksellers lied about receiving the return and abebooks refused to refund my money. LIARS AND THIEVES.
I have been struggling finding a book on amazon then I bumped into abebooks and not only I found the book i was looking for but it arrived in perfect time.
I am interested in going after this fraudulent company. It appears that everyone has the same consist experience, order their books, no books arrive, and then you have to chase them for a refund! Ultimately, you get no response, conclusion, we have all been ripped off! This is a scam! I don't care about my refund now, what I care about is shutting them down, so no one else is ripped off. Plz contact me if you feel the same, and we can worked together against these people! If you care, my email address... *******@gmail. Com
Sent the wrong books and there is no support if the bookseller screws you over. I threw away $40.00... NEVER AGAIN!
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
