At first I was alarmed about receiving the right book because of all the bad and negative reviews I read. But my order came a whole lot sooner than the expected arrival date. The Bible looks as if it has hardly been touched and it is what I ordered. I can truly say that I am more than pleased, I'm excited and I am grateful! Thank you Abebooks, keep up the good work. God bless you all!
I ordered a book I need for work about a month ago. Last week, wondering where it is in the delivery process, I checked the tracking information. It had been delivered to the wrong address and was now sitting in a post office 2 1/2 hours away. I contacted them on 2/14 and to date (2/19) the only communication I have had from them is to check my tracking information. Further, I could not locate a customer service telephone number. I am so disgusted. If I could give them zero stars - I would!
I ordered an access code card for one of my classes, for around $60. After a week I got antsy and contacted the bookseller to ask for some tracking information. They responded that they would get on it. That was the LAST time I heard from them! I tried to cancel my order after just buying the code at my bookstore, and they rejected my request to cancel the order. I tried contacting the bookseller again to request that they refund my purchase, and they never responded (even so AbeBooks "guarantees" a response within two business days). I tried to contact the AbeBooks customer support and yet again, I have received no contact back. I have so far tried contacting them twice, I've contacted my bank, I've even called Amazon (the parent company) and to no avail. I'm out $60 that would've helped me pay for my textbooks.
IF you use abebooks avoid buying anything from WFL BOOKS (Holtsville NY USA). Chances are it will never arrive or it'll be the wrong book. Both happened to me in the same order.
AVOID WFL BOOKS (Holtsville NY USA) aka Vergo Books.
Abebooks is the best place to find out-of-print books to buy. The site lists books available from independent booksellers in a number of countries. I've been able to find and buy all kinds of out of print books, that you can't easliy find elsewhere. The booksellers have all been helpful and I've got my books quickly in the condition described in the listings. When you order through abebooks, you are ordering from an individual seller, so check their rating and reviews before ordering from them. I have had NO problems with any or my orders over the years.
This site is a scam, i ordered my book back in December, I've requested a tracking number and was advised I'd receive one and nothing. No responses to inquiries! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!
I didn't think to check customer reviews before ordering from abebooks--rookie mistake. I usually check reviews, but I slipped. Of course, now I regret that I ever ordered from them. I was promised that the book would be delivered within 3-7 business days. It didn't happen. Now, I simply hope it comes before I have to order this book from a reputable, reliable company to avoid bigger problems. This will no doubt be my first and last time ordering from this company--cheap can be costly.
I purchased a textbook for my human resources class. I ordered it on the 7th of January but it didn't ship until the 17th, despite their site stating that they ship within 24 hours, so I didn't get it until a week past the start of class. When questioned, they blamed the USPS. The book was described as an international edition that had the same content as the North American version. Nope. Not the same at all. I requested a return citing their return policy(100% return if seller makes a mistake-- 1. Shipping delay and 2. Poor description of book) but they fought me for a week. They eventually said they'd return $3 of my $15 purchase. What a rip off!
I ordered 2 books on Mazda RX-7's for Christmas. The booksellers sent 2 completely incorrect books. I had to pay for the shipping to return the products. Even though this was their mistake. It has taken me a while to get to the post office and of course the day that I managed to get them in the mail I received an email cancelling my return request. This is a nightmare. Don't waste your time with this site.
Bought a book from there website, went through checkout, all went well, received an email saying "order placed". Received an email the next day saying the book was out of stock at there normal location and there was an additional charge of $20.00 to get the book from the U. K. Poor way to do business, they should of sucked it up and paid the fee them selves for the screw up. Didn't pay there additional fee and took my business elsewhere. Won't be back!
I bought a textbook from this website, where the title told me I would get a Pearson code, so I paid 98$ (shipping was like $5, the textbook itself was $92) When the book arrived, there was not a code so I emailed the company and they were very difficult, and made me pay an extra $11 for shipping returns. Go to Chegg or Amazon!
I ordered a book from a seller (HPB Ohio), the book I received was not what I ordered. I contacted the seller, No response, contacted again a week later, no response. Contacted Abebooks.com, they said they contacted the seller and got- No response. The policy stated the seller WILL respond within 2 days. Its been over 2 weeks now. Abebooks- demands I spend more money on return shipping of the wrong book and get it back to the seller. First- if the seller wanted the wrong book returned- why didn't they respond? Second- What guarantees they will refund any of the cost- let alone the return shipping. Third- why I am being held to policies and further inconvenienced for the sellers error.
Why is this not US mail fraud?- a mistake is one thing. But failing to respond or refund money (rightfully owed) is FRAUD.
A friend bought from a listing of a hard-cover book -
A soft-cover version arrived from Amazon
This is false advertising and a scam - do not use this website.
Abe books ordered a book that I did not want because I had to put my info in to see the tax costs and such. Anyway, they wouldn't let me cancel it once it was sent (which was when the email arrived that I ordered it) so I was left with a textbook I own (and bought for $50 of the cost listed) and a $127 charge on my credit card and another $30 (of Customs and Delivery?). They ship through DHL (the WORST shipping company ever; but that's a whole different review) and they still have not delivered my package a month after it was supposed to arrive and they continue to tell me it will be delivered "tomorrow." Please NEVER ship from Abe or DHL...
I was surprised to find a book on AbeBooks for $30 that was selling on Amazon for $80. A couple of weeks after placing the order, I checked in and noticed that it had been shipped. However, on further investigation, I learned that it had NOT been shipped--but my American Express had been charged! The explanation provided by the bookseller (Books Express) was that, when they went to fill the order, another book was in this book's place. I am suspicious, however. I think they realized that the book could sell for more and sold it out
From under me. Furthermore, I was never sent a notification that anything had changed in
The status of my order. I've been trying to talk with someone about this, but all they will tell me is that they have now credited my American Express card. As far as I can see, there is no way to talk with an actual person. I'd rate customer service as very poor.
Ordered a new textbook. It arrived in good shape but 16 days after I ordered it. These guys are slow and their response to my complaints was anemic. Wish I'd checked up on them before I placed the order.
Bought a textbook for $200 dollars from them as I was not able to find it anywhere else. A day later I receive an email saying I am being refunded as the order was accepted by an error. Class starting soon, lost a day. Said I was going to be refunded within 48 hours. 5 business days later no refund. Why would you accept an order for a book that you don't have. You really don't need to be that smart to check your inventory. Hope I get a refund. Stay away from these clowns.
Abebook policy allows sellers to list a delivered price, log the sale, then email for a "shipping price" increase, supposedly for faster delivery. However, my experience was that if the "faster delivery" service is declined, the seller merely cancels the transaction rather than delivering at the agreed price, which included shipping.
Declining to deliver at the agreed terms after an attempt at a price bump is a classic bait and switch sales swindle, illegal in most countries... and Abebooks will not enforce the original terms. I recommend you do not purchase anything via Abebooks.
I ordered 15 books on November 28th. It said it was shipped from indoo.com on November 30th but they would not send me tracking after two e mails, just a form letter. I received the books on the 18th through Fedex and it said it was sent the 14th?!? The order was missing one book and after several e mails I have not had a response. I will never order from abebooks again and I know that they are owned by amazon so I'll have to be careful not to get duped into using them again.
I PAID $65.00 dollars for a NEW BOOK. What the hell? You sent me piece crap USED BOOK that is written in. I needed the ACCESS WHICH IS WHY I BOUGHT A NEW FREAKING BOOK. What the hell? That's is illegal misrepresentation of products. I will report your sorry butt to any agency that will listen. MY INVOICE SAYS NEW BOOK. NOT THIS FREAKING USED BULL YOU SENT. SEND ME MY NEW BOOK WITH MY ACCESS.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
