Exceptionally helpful site.
It has taken a while for me to train myself not to answer the phone when there is an unknown caller on caller i.d. Unfortunately, many calls get through because there is some kind of name posted on the caller i.d. - like the commonly used moniker "Unknown Name."
Many of the calls trigger my voice mail and they then hang up. Many times I am home, view caller i.d., and go right to 800notes.com. The problematic phone number is almost always listed and there are explanations from other people.
No membership is required in order to post info on 800notes. This makes the site highly informative. I post every single time I receive a pesky telemarketing related phone call. The site also lists information about phone-related scams that have circulated or are currently circulating.
What people may not know - companies you have done business with, political campaigns, and nonprofits can legally call you (according to the "do not call" law) and you must specifically say to them "put me on the do not call list."
Also - many people dial the toll-free number back out of curiosity, and since the telemarketer is paying for the call, the law allows them to see your phone number. Expect a lot of calls from them in the future if you do that.
800notes is very helpful with all of this. If you get a telemarketing phone call or an anonymous caller that is actually a telemarketer, either visit 800notes directly or Google the phone number and 800notes is usually the first site to be listed. If you have a few moments to post about the phone call, then I hope you do. It will help other consumers (and actually that is what SiteJabber is all about - consumer advocacy and protection).
You guys are insane-NSA really?! You're sounding like some of the shills that are dealt with on the site-it's for people to post comments about numbers that have called them-a FORUM!
800notes is the best site I've found for getting information on unknown callers. It's also a treasure trove of useful information and advice on dealing with unwanted calls and callers. The forum interface could use some improvement as it's often difficult to find the newest post in a long discussion, but that detracts little from the site's tremendous usefulness. One of the few web sites I keep in the Firefox "Bookmarks Toolbar".
Whenever I get a telemarketing call, the number seems to be listed on this site. I'm on the Do Not Call list, so I should never get any telemarketing calls.
I don't know that this site is always right, but I think most complaints are by unethical telemarketers (=ignoring DNC list) and collectors who want to discredit a site that opposes them.
800Notes.com has been the subject of many complaints. Our group's occurred when a member posted a complaint there regarding a company called CallCentric.com. Our poster was at first denied the right to post links, was set upon immediately by 'trusted posters', had our posts deleted and then the admin locked the thread.
Our complaint regarding this company was legitimate and there are questions as to whether 800Notes.com protects some companies and disses others. A FB page has been set up to collect complaints regarding this forum.

This free site has come in handy several times when curiosity got the best of me and I just had to find out who it was calling. It features comments from other folks who got the same call, most times on the same day I got a call.
