The company has garnered significant criticism for its customer service, with many customers expressing frustration over the lack of responsive support and difficulties in obtaining refunds. Common complaints include billing issues, inadequate communication, and a perceived lack of accountability for damages caused by sitters. While some users reported positive experiences with sitters, the overall sentiment reflects a sense of disappointment and mistrust, particularly among sitters who feel exploited by the fee structure. The company appears to prioritize marketing efforts over customer satisfaction, leading to a growing perception of unprofessionalism and dissatisfaction among users.

I let a house sitter into my house through trustedhousesitters not knowing that he was filthy and scary. Luckily I stayed in my house next door. I needed a house sitter as I was renovating and needed to travel to find things for the main house... After a while my house began to smell. It was the gite. When I confronted the house sitter he didn; t clean it but offered to leave. It took 2 weeks to get rid of the filth and smell. I complained to trustedhousesitters and also noticed this house sitter had made up more references while he stayed with me and I told them of this... instead of appologising they struck me off as it is against their code of conduct to stay in a property while a house sitter was present. I didn't realise this. But the house sitter was also in breach. I understand he is still available to sit at your home anywhere in the world. The moral is you cannot complain. And house sitters can do what they want...!
We have been using TrustedHousesitters for three years both for getting sitters to look after our cats and home, and more recently to sit for other people. We love it and couldnt imagine traveling without it now. Weve made many friends along the way.
For our own home and pets, we have used sitters from TrustedHousesitters on maybe a dozen occasions, safe in the knowledge that, first and foremost, our cats are well cared for and happy. They dont have the stress of going into a cattery and are happy in their own environment. Our home is secure and clean when we return. We get regular updates from our sitters.
The process TrustedHousesitters use-reviews and police checks-makes it very easy to shortlist applicants. Its then down to us to do the final vetting and selection via email and Skype. We usually find we have several suitable applicants and sadly have to choose just one.
Contrary to some of the reviews on here, we have never had a problem with our sitters from THS and are always recommending it as we travel. There is a responsibility on us as homeowners to do our due diligence before making our final selection.
As sitters for other people, we have also had a fantastic experience staying in some beautiful places and taking care of some lovely animals who we have fallen in love with and returned on several occasions. Traveling as a house/pet sitter, the experience is enriched by caring for the animals and by becoming a part of the community.
I have no hesitation in recommending TrustedHousesitters whose ethos seems to be very much aimed at animal welfare and member satisfaction first and foremost.
We've used THS for over 6 years and have great experiences both in New York and California. Our homes and pets were well taken care of by experienced, caring sitters. Highly recommend them.
I LOVE TrustedHousesitters.com and share it with everybody! I stumbled upon the site while looking for an affordable way to travel and experience new places more like a local. After my first house sit, I've been hooked for life! In two years, my friend and I traveled all over the USA house/pet sitting and we made so many amazing four and two-legged friends. Applying for the assignments has been extremely easy, and we always manage to find like-minded home owners that we share a lot in common with. From New Orleans, Chicago, and San Francisco through Maui to Barcelona and Paris - every experience I have had through the website has been incredible! Not to mention, that my friend and I won a contest hosted by TrustedHousesitters, com and got free airplane tickets to anywhere in the world! We decided to go to Portugal and pet sit four adorable cats!:-) The TH team has been so helpful and professional, I love how everybody seems to really care about what they do and they have been introducing user-suggested improvements all the time! I love how the site allows me the flexibility to travel affordably and experience new places as the locals do, while enjoying the company of pets and making new friends! It has definitely changed my life in so many ways and I recommended wholeheartedly to everyone who shares the same passions in life!:-)
I absolutely love TrustedHousesitters - it has been a revelation to me. A have managed to find the most wonderful people to look after my pup when I had to go away on a business trip at short notice. I'm so impressed - the sitter, Claudia was an absolute gem of a find. She sent regular updates and my home was well looked after too - plants all thrived under her loving care which was an added bonus! My experience has been nothing short of amazing - and I look forward to using it again in the future and have no doubt from the people who applied initially there are tons of brilliant, caring sitters who will be just as good as my first. Thank you to the team at Trusted, for coming up with the idea and executing it so well, I've found all the comms to be really useful and I get the sense it is a company which cares, what a find!
I emailed TH a week ago to cancel my membership. I'm within 14 days of signing up and haven't used the service and have emailed them 4 times with no response, tried using live chat with no response and had no answer through phone. I see that they seem to answer these reviews so hoping to finally get through to someone.
This service is not what it seems. As advertised to travellers it seems like a great way to meet people and see new places while getting to look after some cute pets, but there are a lot of applicants for the few places, and as the hosts are wanting specific dates to be looked after it doesn't really fit with travellers.
For one thing theres at least 20 other people applying for the same house and if you are successful you need to be at their home at a certain date etc, so for people travelling on a budget it's actually probably going to be more expensive to get to certain places on specific dates, which are super random and sometimes months away. This is sort of obvious now that I've had a change to actually see the inside of the House sitter process, and maybe it's just because I'm in Australia, but it just doesn't suit my way of travel and I feel like it's advertised as something a lot more traveller friendly. I think that's a fair reason to cancel and be refunded, so I don't understand why no one is getting back to me, I'm sure it's because I'm asking to be refunded and they will say next that I'm out of the 14 day period because they have failed out get back to me. Seems very much like a scam and I certainly won't be recommending this site to anyone.
Please, can someone get back to me regarding this?
Thanks!
Dear Jenn,
Thank you for your review regarding a refund request. Unfortunately, I am unable to find your account with the information provided in the review. I would like to assist you further with this so please email me at [email protected] FAO Carla and once your request is received then I can look into this for you.
I am surprised to hear that you have not managed to reach us via any of our channels, especially as live chat is the quickest method to contact us on. Please be assured that once I have your registered email address and full name then I will be able to locate any communications with us. If you are eligible for a refund as per our refund procedure then we will certainly get that processed for you when we have received your request.
I am always keen to help new members get started on their sitting adventures and we are posting approximately 100 new sitting opportunities per day in over 150 countries worldwide. Australia being one of the largest opportunity bases.
I am more than happy to assist you when searching for suitable sits and there are many sits currently available with no applications. The great thing is that how the application process works is that the owners choose the most suitable sitter for them and their pets - it is by no means on a first come first served bases. In fact, the most recent applications appear at the top of the owner's inbox!
The dates are also often negotiable with the owners, with many sits accommodating the sitter arriving earlier for a handover. Once you have connected on the sit then you and the owner can make the arrangements that suit you both the best!
There are more tips that I can give you when you get in touch and I look forward to hearing from you so that I can assist you further.

My husband and I rehomed a dog from an animal rescue in August 2017 knowing that we were going away on a two week holiday at the end of September. It was our plan for our new addition to the family to go and stay with a friend and her family where he would have been well look after.
However it became very clear that our dear little Max was not going to like going from one home to another as he had become so settled in our home that occasionally resisted going out for walks. It was clear that he was happiest in our house, with his toys and routines.
I must admit I was thrown and considered cancelling our holiday. However a friend at work suggested TrustedHouseSitters. I was very unsure but enquired and from the moment I stared the process I felt I was in safe hands. One I had found sitters who were free I started preparing my guide to my home. I had to put in an amazing amount of information about Max which I found reassuring.
Our sitters arrived the night before and we were immediately impressed by their friendliness and professionalism. They were also clearly experienced with dogs and within minutes Max had taken to them both.
While we were away I received regular updates and photos via Whats App and all my questions about Max's welfare were answered in full. I felt so reassured and because I knew Max was happy I was able to enjoy my holiday.
The arrangements for our return were exceptional. My house-sitter ensured that they stay with Max until an our before we arrived home. She had been checking the status of our flight and we spoke as soon as we landed.
We were delighted to see how happy Max was. He greeted us as if we had only been out for ten minutes and he was clearly a very happy and contented dog. He was still enamoured with his routine and we felt we had done the right thing by him.
My husband and I were also amazed at how beautifully clean and tidy our house was with fresh flowers in the kitchen and a loaf of fresh bread in the kitchen and milk and other fresh items in the fridge. Our sheets had been changed and all the towels and linen were freshly changed. Everything was perfect. All our mail had been left in the order it had arrived and there were notes about phone calls etc.
I was so pleased with our experience of Trusted HouseSitters that I wrote quite a long blog which they have posted on their website. TrustHouseSitters really are an incredible and responsible organisation and they don't take the trust you put in them lightly.
We have nothing but good things to say about TrustedHouse Sitters, we have been members for 5 years and just love it. When we first joined we provided external references, home/pet owners quite rightly look for people with good references. The first house sit was in an area we knew very well having previously lived there and the owner liked the fact we knew the local parks etc. We then did lots of sits in the UK building up a good profile with references. Along the way we learnt a lot about parts of our own county we would never had visited. Eventually we applied for the first sit abroad and although we were short listed were unsuccessful, however the next one we applied for we were successful. Every sit is different as is every home owner and they are looking for different qualities, when we apply and are unsuccessful we don't take it personally. For example recently we applied for 2 sits one said it had 0-3 applicants and we were unsuccessful, the next one said 41-50 applicants and we were successful. The support and guidance from the team at head office has always been good for us.
On reading most of the comments below, good and bad, Im surprised that there are people who are rating the site with one/two stars due to the fact they didnt get a confirmed sit/sitter. As with most things in life you have to be realistic with what your aim is when signing up. I moved abroad a few years ago and found it very useful when returning to my home country to visit friends and relatives, I would apply for sits in nearby towns and that way I had my own space. Ive had repeat Sits and have been asked regularly to do sits coming up for people that have read my profile. It also helped me confirm sits in the country I was living in, even though people had never heard of the sit, I could refer to it if I heard people where looking for a sitter and it worked for me. I suppose its a bit like uploading your CV for a job application, not everyone gets an interview. Disappointed as it may seem, to anyone who is serious about doing a sit my advice would be go for it. Give it a year and then review things from there as to wether or not its working for you.
As a pet lover, it was early in 2016 that an associate suggested I consider House Sitting.
After subscribing to various websites, I was introduced to Trusted House Sitters by a friend. Their website simply provides a very effective platform with a means for pet owners and pet sitters alike, from all over the world, to be introduced and connect with each other for mutual benefit.
Trusted House Sitters introduced me to my very first house sit opportunity in the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Australia. It was then that my life truly changed in ways that I would never have previously imagined!
Since that very first house sit through Trusted House Sitters, I have met many amazing pet owners (many of whom are now my closest friends). I have stayed in wonderful homes and experienced incredible hospitality, places and cities that I would not have ordinarily had the opportunity to visit.
With over 30 house sits now under my belt (and many more booked in advance for 2018), I have travelled through Australia, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Austria and am currently writing this review from an assignment in Spain. It's no wonder that I am an avid fan and supporter of Trusted House Sitters. Their vision to provide pet owners with more freedom to spend time away as well as an option for pets to enjoy staying in the comfort of their own home whilst their owners are absent is a great idea.
The thing I love most about Trusted House Sitters and my experiences is that for a modest annual fee they provide a unique "Win Win" opportunity for both pet owners and sitters alike!
Be aware, though, this incredible opportunity is NOT for everyone.
If you are the kind of person who expects pet owners to cue up and open their hearts and homes just to give you an opportunity for free accomodation and a sight seeing holiday... think again!
Like anything worthwhile in life, nothing is for free! But if you have the right attitude, the world via Trusted House Sitters is literally at your fingertips.
Importantly, for those who are considering undertaking this wonderful Pet Sitting opportunity with Trusted House Sitters, (or any other organisation for that matter) my advice is simple. To enjoy the many rewards, you must ensure that your primary commitment is for the utmost welfare of the pets and animals you will have the privilege to care for.
If you put your heart and soul into caring for the pets as your primary objective the rewards that await will be the icing on your cake and, like me, you will truly enjoy many valuable and highly memorable travel experiences in the process.
Remember, this house sitting opportunity only exists because pet owners seek someone in whom they can ultimately trust to dedicate time looking after their home during their absence and someone to provide the same love, attention, walks and hugs for their beloved pets as they would.
Thank you Trusted House Sitters!
We have been using Trusted for more than two years now both sitting for others and having sitters for our two dogs. Every experience so far has been fantastic and we have saved a fortune on accommodation for our holidays and our dogs have been well looked after, as far as we know, for free in their own home. Personally I cannot recommend the service enough!
The team at Trusted House Sitters offer excellent customer service and I find locating a house sitter through the website a rewarding experience. The information provided to members via the website and through social media channels is clear and informative. Whenever I have had a question for the team the responses have always been without delay and answered comprehensively. Trusted House Sitters offer such a good service and platform to enable people to travel and for pet owners to feel safe in the knowledge their pets are well cared for, I am always encouraging my friends to look at becoming house sitters and joining. We have had our home looked after while on holiday which includes two cats and have always returned to find our pets happy and the house immaculate. Thanks to the team and the service which has always surpassed our expectations.
Loving our Adventure! We started with this website in early 2017 and are on our 30th housesit as I write this. TrustedHouseSitters was a life changer for us, allowing us to travel the world. Yes it is a bit of work to find the right match for both you and the homeowner, but it has been well worth it. Looking forward to many more great adventures and experiences!
Incredibly misleading. When you sign up, you'll see very quickly that those 'ideal' locations for house sits have 100+ applicants. If you do apply for a house sit, you'll find you either receive no response, be told that the person has found a sitter off-site. A request for a refund or any kind of compensation is met with a lack of sympathy. Site advertises that they will help you find accommodations--they don't. If you sign up, ensure you go to your settings and uncheck auto-renew. They will try to charge your card again automatically
Hi There
I am very sorry to hear you feel this has been your experience, as I can assure you this is not the norm. The overwhelming majority of sitters, find incredible success, if our advice and guidelines are followed in creating a profile, all tools are utilised and you are as flexible and proactive as possible, and we have a 24 hour Membership Service team on hand to help with this every step of the way.
It is rare for a particular listing to have that many applicants, however for the few where that is the case, it does not mean you should not apply, as sitters are rarely chosen on a first come first served basis, it is about the right fit for the owners, and you could be the perfect sitter they are looking for.
It is a part of our Members Code of Conduct, that being responsive to applicant messages is vital, and if brought to our attention, that this is not the case for a specific member, we will definitely step in and ensure all of our guidelines are being followed.
We are very transparent in the conditions of membership and our position on refunds and subscriptions, but we are always keen to discuss individual circumstances further, and do appreciate hearing from our members, so do not hesitate to contact us on [email protected] so we can try to help you further.
Thank you
The TrustedHousesitters Team
I signed up due to the marketing tool they use to say you can travel the world while having a free place to stay. Yes that is true if you joined this site years ago. But now, there are so many experience pet sitters that apply and get positions that a newbie will only get local sit. I joined and requested two local sits to try to get some experience. Then I was looking for some travel sits and noticed they all had 12 to 15 applicants already. Plus most sits require you to have a car. They also request you stay with the pets most of the day or only leave them 4 to 6 hours a day. How can you travel and see the world when you have to stay in a home that long. I requested my refund the next day, within 10 hours of signing up and they refused. They said because I applied for local jobs I benefited. I did not get any response from those jobs and deledted my request and asked for my refund again. They again refused. Do not use this site. You will not have a chance with sightseeing and having a free place to stay. They also will not show you how many applicants there are for jobs until you pay. Then they refuse to refund you.
Hello Anne,
I am very sorry to read your comment, we really do want all of our members to have the very best pet and housesitting experience and we have a dedicated team who work very hard, often on a one to one basis, to help make that happen. I have tried to locate your TrustedHousesitters account but need more information and would ask that you contact me directly as there are many ways in which we can help new members achieve success but without seeing your information it is very hard to offer any advice.
The fact that you requested a refund just 10 hours after joining could be a factor. The time between creating a professional, informative profile, adding references and completing the Trust and Verification steps, applying to the owner, communicating with the owners, being short listed, Skyping and finally being confirmed as their sitter can often take days. Whilst there is no definitive period, allowing just a few hours to secure a sit may have greatly contributed to your disappointment, that is why it’s essential we have direct communication as I’m sure we could have helped you manage your expectations towards achieving success.
There are locations which do receive a high number of applications, however there are many more wonderful opportunities that do not. Applying for the sit which is right for you, your experience and skills, is so important, again it’s impossible to measure this aspect as being a factor without knowing the sits you applied for and how you communicated with the owners.
Town and city sits, where there is good public transport would not require a car and often with rural locations owners are willing to discuss the use of a car with qualified drivers.
Pets are at the very heart of TrustedHousesitters, images of pets populate the listings pages, they are the very reason members come to TrustedHousesitters and our messaging is for "pet lovers who love to travel” Living like a local, having real life experiences in the company of beloved pets, in locations of choice is a lifestyle choice and presents a unique opportunity for authentic travel, our member’s stories are testament to the amazing travel opportunities TrustedHousesitters enjoy. TrustedHousesitters stay when traveling, they don’t visit unlike conventional visitors.
Regarding your refund if you are eligible for a refund we are very fair and will never refuse this for eligible accounts. However as with any situation and in line with the conditions of the membership you agreed to when joining, if the site and services have been used a refund may not be possible.
Please do contact me directly [email protected] so that we may have a one to one conversation, we really want you to get the very best from your membership and enjoy all it has to offer.
Sincerely,
The TrustedHousesitters Team
I honestly have to say this website changed my life. I was turning 50 and my husband 55. We wanted to take a Year or so out and travel the world. We stumbled onto trusted house sitters site and joined up. We needed to get some reviews of us, so we went sitting in out of the way places to get the experience. What a fantastic idea. We went to places we would never ever thought Of going. We have now done 26 fantastic sits all over the world. We have kept in touch with many of the home owners and become friends for life. We dont sit full time, but now take a few months every year and meet new and wonderful people, but more importantly, Amazing pets. Thank you.
I have been a member of TrustedHousesitters for over 2 years and in that time have had the best experience with finding a sitter to watch my cat and dog. I've always had plenty of people contact me with interest and I've met so many fantastic people along the way. I travel a lot for work and without this service, I simply wouldn't be able to travel at the drop of a hat - it's a life essential. Thank you TRUSTEDHOUSESITTERS!
After retiring and then having to say goodbye to our last elderly dog life was strangely different. We were suddenly free to travel after years of caring but were missing the company of a furry friend. TrustedHousesitters has filled that gap perfectly. We can travel the world and at the same time enjoy the company of an animal whilst making new friends and being helpful to owners. The staff have been super helpful, the site easy to negotiate and to date we've had some wonderful stays in Guernsey, Italy and the UK. Thank you TH for making it all possible. (We're just off to pack for our next adventure!)
Reading these bad reviews - Are we talking about the same company?! I have to think there must be a "fake review" thing going on here?! We own a 7 bedroom large 1600's historic stone house in England and have had 27 house sitters from trusted.Housesitters.com. EVERY single experience has been excellent. Over the last 6 years we have made friends with our house sitters who have taken superb care of our pets and house and huge garden. I highly recommend this company to anyone who wants to leave their pets, home and garden with caring, conscientious, ultra responsible people. All this for FREE (after paying the small fee for joining the website). We are looking forward to using the company for another 27 times (at least) in the future!
I joined TrustedHousesitters shortly after it launched and I have to say it was one of the best things I've ever done. I've secured sits in places like Barbados, Las Vegas, New Zealand, London, and Australia through the site and have met some truly amazing people who I am now so thrilled to call friends. Over the last 6 years the site has evolved and the introduction of new features have made it easier to find sits and communicate with owners. All my dealings with the help center staff have been positive and even the lady who runs their Facebook page has given me helpful advice after I commented on a post she had written. A big thanks to the website for helping me to travel to so many new places and meet so many amazing people! Highly recommended!
Answer: Fees are an annual membership for both homeowner and pet sitters (approx $120). With thousands of members, I've not had any problem finding a sitter.
Answer: Hi Jim, when house sitting it is expected that you will take care of your own cooking, etc. You will have full use of the homeowners kitchen facilities. We hope this helps. TrustedTeam
Answer: Yes. It depends on where you live but this couple is beyond question the best and dependable and honest. Debbie and Wil Wilburn. [email protected] Please give my name: Fluffy's mom
Answer: Your accommodations are free. You still have to get there on your own. Since accommodations are often the biggest expense of a trip, it is a great deal. Use code RAF270183 to get 25% off you annual membership fee.
Answer: Hi Caroline, Thank you for your question, forgive my delayed reply. If you haven't already contacted the Membership Services Team (https://support.trustedhousesitters.com/hc/en-gb) I would encourage you to do so and they will help you to get this resolved. Kind Regards, The TrustedHousesitters Team
Answer: Hi Sada, You'll be able to read reviews of the sitters on their profiles. If there isn't anything showing, then this indicates that the sitter doesn't have any reviews just yet. If there is something else that we can do to help, please do get in touch with Membership Services, and we'll be more than happy to speak with you further. Kind regards, The TrustedHousesitters Team

Dear Sharon,
I am really sorry to hear that you remain dissatisfied with the outcome of our complaints investigation as discussed today.
Please be assured that we have thoroughly investigated this complaint in a fair and unbiased way, taking into consideration information and evidence submitted by both members.
We never take the decision to suspend a member lightly, however, I am sure that you can appreciate all members need to abide by the Code of Conduct in order to keep the community a place of trust.
The site ethos works on the basis that it is a win-win for both members. Sitters care for your pets and home whilst you are away in exchange for the companionship of pet's and the chance to live like a local.
The owner and third parties being in residence during a sit, and/or the sitter assisting with work can sometimes lead to issues arising, as in this case. This is why to protect the privacy and security of the sitters during the sit, we ask that owners and third parties are not in residence in the property at the same time as the sitter.
During the course of our thorough investigation, some serious issues did come to light in regards to direct breaches to our Code of Conduct, which resulted in the suspension of your membership with a pro-rated refund of your membership fee.
The sitter conduct has also been investigated in line with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate action has been taken.
I can categorically assure you that we take all complaints very seriously and the Code of Conduct applies to all members of the community and is strictly enforced. However, it is a rarity for any members to have reason to raise an issue with one another.
The TrustedHousesitters Team.
