I have house-sat with TH in the States, Canada and the UK and have had only great experiences. I had only applied for far-away destinations, but local homeowners also found me on TH and engaged me, and I have ended up also having great mini-vacations with lovely pets only a few miles from home `` such a great break. Extensive emails back and forth essential, and for local sits I always meet them in person weeks ahead of time as well. I also will send documents to prospective homeowners to prove I am legitimate, and have asked homeowners for references of their own in the past. There is a lot of trust involved on both sides, so both sides should do as much research as possible. I do not have any pets right now so am very happy to play and care for other peoples' pets. I have found the homeowners I have helped out to be universally grateful and relieved to have someone caring to trust with their pets and home. In return, I am appreciative of the trust they show me and the chance for a free vacation in interesting places plus pets! What could be better? (I do not charge a fee). I always leave the house as clean or cleaner than when I arrived. Perfect arrangements for me, as I am a young retiree with grown children who loves pets, is good at outdoor and indoor work and is self-motivated to do a good job. If I apply to something it is only after some thought so I always ask them to briefly acknowledge my application even if they have chosen someone else. This has worked every time but once. Was it a false review, as one reviewer suggests? Possibly... or maybe it is a careless person who neglected to remove his ad after having chosen someone.
Again, I urge everyone to get as much info on the other person as possible before accepting, to avoid uncomfortable or dangerous situations.
I would also like to see more homeowners think to add requirements such as "dog must not be left alone for more than 4 hours". I am surprised that all dogowners do not do this.
For me, TH has been worth the annual fee.

We have been travelling for 4 months currently, we have done 3 housesit through trusted house sitters. This is such a fabulous way of living like a local and staying in areas you wouldnt normally stay. We have been lucky enough to have been chosen for 3 amazing housesits, with each one being very unique. David and Gilly are very welcoming and easy to communicate with and all the arrangements were very straight forward. Their garden is wonderful, the watering system is all in place and the whole environment is very relaxing to be in. Both cats are a delight Leo is very attentive and affectionate needs a little care though not complicated. Sam is very independent comes and goes as she pleases, and a few times a day she arrives for a friendly chat and a stroke. I would give a 100% recommendation to anyone who is thinking about this house. David and Gilly are wonderful hosts. Thank you both for inviting me to your home it has been a pleasure and I am very much looking forward to being in touch again.

I met Marie and Ian prior to my first sit with them. They were very welcoming, introduced me to their pets, and took the time to show me around their house and land.

As promised, they left me detailed instructions for looking after Maddie, Marley, Loki, Chi, the chickens and the fish, and contact numbers for emergencies.

They were very flexible when I needed to be out for a couple of hours during my stay because of work commitments, and were very generous with their gifts.

My room was beautiful, spotlessly clean, and towels had been provided.

Communication was always first rate, and I was never made to feel as though I was troubling them when I needed to contact them whilst they were away.

I am currently on my second sit for Marie and Ian, and delighted to be back getting doggie cuddles.

I can thoroughly recommend Marie and Ian, and their gorgeous animals.

I was able to see Glasgow for two weeks for the price of a plane ticket! I was able to speak to my sit over video chat and we did not move forward until we were comfortable with each other. It was a very positive experience and one I hope to repeat. As with all things, buyer beware... do your own due diligence and make sure that you have your bases covered YOURSELF. This is a facilitation site, not a matchmaking site. It does not do the work for you. If your personalities clash or if you are uncomfortable with the sit/sitter you haven chosen, then part company and start again. Prospective sits, please be realistic. Do not expect your sitter to be a hostage in your home. Sitters do this to travel and see the sights. Prospective sitters, if you chose to housesit, be committed. People are depending on you, so if you are at all flakey, please pass and find another way. Leaving someone stranded is not cool. Spend time with the animals. It's why you're there. With that said, I had a great experience and hope to do it again very soon.

My husband and I are on a long road trip adventure and wanted to stay in a few places for 3 to 4 weeks. We decided to try house sitting at the suggestion of friends who have had a good experience.
