I was looking for a handyman. I have several rentals and needed one or 2 handymen to take care of my properties. When you go in and type what you want you do get responses but I think are automatic. I think the people that go on thumbtack can't get any other work. It's obvious that they don't vet the people which would help out a great deal. I actually met up with one contractor and he seemed ok but when I called his references they said he doesn't complete his work. Also, the first time I tried to call/text him, his phone was disconnected.
I'll never use them again.
Hi all,
My husband and I used this website to accumulate some more customers for our Construction business. We had some disappointments with the constructors that we used, therefore, some customers had to wait longer than they should. Thumbtack, without contacting us or warning us, decided to give them refund that they supposedly deserve, and without saying anything or asking us- what happened - just took the money out of the account that we used to pay for credits on the website. BE CAUTIOS AND DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE. THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER WITHOUT ANY WARNING OR A CHANCE FOR US TO FIX IT.
These folk present them selves as generating customers. I was charged $26 for one quote. The customer chose another provider. I've spend nearly$100 and I have one customer that has not paid me yet. I am doing better on Craigslist.
I spoke with customer service and all they could do was blame me. I get better value with the local paper, craigslist and word of mouth.
There are just a lot of "shoppers" who click off all the providers of service look at the quotes, Many never ask additional questions.
Thumbtack get's paid either way you look at it! The"pro"walks away with NOTHING and thumbtack gets paid either way!
This is the EXACT same tactic used by another well-known scam company out of Colorado!
We experienced it firsthand!
My advice... run and run fast!(if you can) and if you believe you have been scammed by this "company", contact the BBB immediately!
Thumbtack is very unprofessional I will never go with Thumbtack I can go with HomeAdvisor Thumbtack also takes all charges you crazy feel like $30 to send a quote and you never get respond from the client
They caused me to lose a $1400 job. N said they d fix it n never. Said a supervuser would help me solve it. Been t days n no reply
I cant say enough good things about this company. The cost was reasonable and the job was done swiftly as promised. They did a totally professional job, working long hours to complete my project. When finished they cleaned up after themselves and left me with a beautiful backyard. Since moving to GA 4 years ago, I have struggled to find honest, professional workers for my many projects so finding Victors Landscapes and Tree Service has been an absolute blessing. Could not be happier with the job they have done and look forward to our next project!
Joanie Keough Photography provides creative and professional shots! Joanie Keough not only made us feel comfortable during the Photography session, she offered expert guidance and direction while capturing amazing images of my husband and I. She selected a beautiful location for our pictures and orchestrated a series of candid poses that depicted our love story perfectly! I highly recommend Joanie Keough Photography and am overjoyed with the high-quality, digital images she provided. Joanie Keough is an extremely talented photographer, whose artistic eye is matched by her professionalism.
I WAS a thumbtack pro for the last 2 years, I have spent thousands of dollars on leads and had over 20 different businesses join to them as well. I have over 160 positive reviews and only one review that was not 5 stars and even that one called thumbtack to tell them that it was a mistake, they were informed that it could not be taken down and that I would be shut down because of it. Now thumbtack has completely shut me down without even contacting me first. After talking to one of the phone reps I was told nothing can be done to reactivate it. I had my attorney look through all the thumbtack rules and guidelines and it does state that they can shut you down ONLY with probable cause in a written explanation. Well I never received one. That is a very very unprofessional way to run any company. I will stop at nothing to contact as many business that I know to make sure they give no more money to these scammers.
As a professional thumbtack has essentially stolen my money. Totally worthless. I have been contacted by nothing but scammers. After $80 in credits I have received no legitimate work and don't intend to give them another $40 to try. The only people receiving work via thumbtack are low bidding criminals that intend to steal your money!
They will charge you more to quote based on factors only they dictate. Many "leads" are just tire kickers. As a tax pro, I would have to spend at least $300 to generate a client, when they can go online and do it for $99 at most. They tell you positive reviews win you business; don't believe it. Save your money; these idiots will just take and take.
Friendly and thorough. Cant wait for them to clean again. Would defiantly recomenned! They know how to deal with dog hair.
I am a Thumbtack professional and I've been using it to get jobs for about 8 months. All in all its been a break even endeavor. As a professional, I have to pay to bid on Thumbtack jobs. They also did a background check of some kind on me. It has generated new leads for me. I think that's great. Thumbtack does work to an extent. I think I'll stick with it for now.
That being said, it is also not a miracle. Some professionals aren't very professional. I've found the same difficulties with bidding on jobs through Thumbtack that are found through any other method of bidding on jobs. Potential clients are often "kicking tires." It can be frustrating to bid on jobs and not recieve a response because it costs money to bid. This is the case with any business. I was lucky in that the cost of bidding on jobs has made it a break even endeavor. All of my reviews are 5 star reviews. That is great. I do appreciate the service, I just found it to be frustrating to not recieve responses or indications of being not hired. More often than not I bid on a job and the client views the bid and does not respond. That means I just lost the money (credits) it costs to bid. Thankfully if the client doesn't view the bid then I get my money back.
I'm still in my first year of using Thumbtack, so I expect that in time I'll be able to advance beyond the break even stage. For now I view it more as advertising and marketing than a surefire way to get work.
My advice to other pros: It's a good way to build business and get you name/business out there, but it's not a magic pill.
As an Illustrator I thought this site was very useful for gaining new clients. You get emailed client requests daily and have the option to quote your service and price. You have to pay for credits, in order to quote on jobs but it's worth it and your not competing against hundreds of people for the same job. Only five people can quote on one job. When you compare this to sites like Elance, I would say this is a better option.
BEWARE my experience with a Thumbtack referral has been a total nightmare. The "professional" they referred cost me $620. In losses commuting multiple illegal actions. He appears to be unstable and possibly dangerous. None of the claims made by their "professionals" in their profiles are verified by Thumbtack. Their definition of a "professional" to Thumbtack is anyone who wil pay their fees, no questions asked. When costumer service reps. Are contacted they have no authority to do anything other than offering patronizing empathy and offer to mediate between victim's and their victimizing "professional". No one will respond to my questions. No one at the company deputies my accusations or attempts to defend their clients obvious indisputable illegal actions. The " professional " stole my money and refuses to reimburse me. Considering their " professional " claimed to be a LLC and a trained mechanical engineer on his Thumbtack profile it was a surprise to learn he lives in a camping trailer at a local county park campground. The California secretary of state has no listing of the claimed LLC in their database. I'm certain this "professional" doesn't have the money to refund and may be violent if angered. I had a reasonable expectation that "hire with confidence" as Thumbtack promotes would be more than promotional empty lies.
I very much needed my gutters cleaned, especially on my aluminum patio cover. To my benefit Thumbtack came up in my search on line. Three people contacted me within an hour. The first to call was from George Barrett. He came the same morning, did a fantastic job, left nothing for me to pick up or throw away. He even had answers and suggestions for me to fix another problem I had. Don't believe I've ever had a better experience with calling and getting a repair professional, which he certainly was. I am a model in the Bel Air, MD area and have had the pleasure to work with Jared Wolfe. His work is priceless and he is very nice to work with. I recommend that if you are ever able to shoot or work with him that you do! It will be a great experience and opportunity for you! He is one of the best in the area!

Kelly did awesome job. She was flexible with our time changes. Her attention to detail was really impressive.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
