ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Wow, im freaked out now, ive sent them at least 15 bags, stuffed with higher end pieces and i have not opted for the return assurance. None of my bags have been processed yet but after reading all these negative comments about how they pay out and decide what to pay for, and then basically steal your pieces by not paying for them at all then selling them on the site anyway? Wtf... im worried and stessed. I know the items i sent i could have sold on Tradesy or Poshmark... Now i just feel screwed and they havent even got to my bags yet. Just way more negatives here then positives, WAY MORE... and ive read every POST made by buyers and sellers. I wish i would have found this 2 weeks ago... dammit... BUT in fairness i will post if i have a positive transaction with them but will wait untill ALL my bags are cleared first. Im hoping for the best but the boxes i have packed now to ship them, will wait in the corner. After all the reading ive done here, if you average it out, there is 10 negatives to each 1 simi positive experiance with this company,,, thats a RED FLAG. Something is off... lets hope for a positive here at the end...
I have a love/hate relationship with ThredUp. I have probably ordered from it about 10 times. I love getting my daughter gently used girls clothing from ThredUp. It is a cheap way to buy very cute outfits. For example last year I bought her a like new gymboree Easter dress for $7.99. The girls clothing has always been excellent quality even if it was sold "flawed".
I have also bought some women's and maternity items from ThredUp. Two tops that I recently purchased had small holes in them but were marked like new. I occasionally buy flawed items, but those items have always been marked flawed. Had I known they had holes I would not have bought them since both items were sweaters and I had planned to wear them to work. With sweaters holes tend to get larger. I contacted ThredUp regarding this issue and they never responded. I also purchased maternity clothing from ThredUp and the one item was marked maternity but when I received it it was obviously a nursing top ( the tag said nursing wear). I use the item now postpregnancy, but again I would not have purchased it if I had known it was a nursing top, since I wanted a black maternity top.
My final complaint about ThredUp is that I wish they offered something for customer loyalty. I can always find codes on the internet for 20-30% off but they are only for new customers. It would be great if there were occasionally similar discounts offered to those who purchase frequently. I know they have referral credits, but I don't blog or solicit my friends.
I have never sold to ThredUp so I cannot speak to that part of their service.
I would give them 1 star for customer service, 3 stars for women's clothing, and 5 for children's. Will I continue to shop from ThredUp? Yes, but probably only for my children.
I've only bought from the site and the app, never sold through it, so keep that in mind. That said, I've had nothing but great experiences! I've bought women's clothing, maternity clothing, girls' clothing, and boys' clothing, all with no problems. The quality has always been exactly as described. When it comes to fit, I generally only buy brands I know my size/fit in, so I've had no real problems with that - on occasion I've had a piece just not look as great as I wanted, but in that case it was cheap enough that I didn't really mind just passing it on to a friend. The free shipping on orders over a certain amount is really attractive to me.
Both the website and app are convenient and easy to use. I like that I can save filters or favorite brands, which carry to the app. I don't usually shop via apps because I usually find the experience somewhat lacking but the ThredUp app is incredibly simple to browse and buy from, and incredibly intuitive.
The clothes take a few days to arrive but I don't use ThredUp for things I need TOMORROW so that doesn't bother me - I use it to stock up on sizes and styles I need in brands I like. All in all I will absolutely continue buying from ThredUp and as my kids grow will probably sell through them as well!
DO NOT SEND THEM CLOTHES!
I was a customer for a few years, but I have grown frustrated and unhappy with the service. The pay-off rates are awful. I started using the site when they offered the box exchanges. They keep changing for the worst. I ended up leaving. It looks like they have tried to change their ways, but, little too late.
There are better returns and customer service from other competitors.
Look elsewhere.
If you want to buy cloths there, is okay. Just be aware that they just ripoff to who ever send their clothes to be resell in that scam of company! They don't pay you well and they will keep all the cloths you send no matter if they pay or not for it! They say whatever did not pass their standards will be donated! Really? I'm sure this company is making a killing on taxes by just donating other peoples clothes!
I love shopping thredup and now even more since they have womans. I have placed several orders for my nephews and the items have been great, perfect for little boys that grow out of things so quick. I love a good deal so I was super excited when they started offering woman. I have never sent in items so I cant comment on that part, but I can say first hand I love shopping there. And I refer them to everyone, so I love there credits they give you for referrals. One thing I would change is the detailing, I would like for it to tell me more.
I have placed more than 10 orders from this website, and the clothing has consistently been in good or excellent condition. On the rare occasions when I have had an issue with an order, customer service has been quick to respond and address the problem. I regularly recommend them to others.
I sold and bought from them. Don't go in with vaunted expectations - I sold to them because it was easy and convenient, and my stuff is mid-range brands like Gap, Loft, BCBGMaxazaria, etc.
What I made I used to shop. The best way to shop the site is to comb the new arrivals. There is a TON of stuff that no one buys that just sits around. It took a lot of browsing for me to find some things that I wanted.
So, shipping. It takes a few days to get clothes, which is OK for me. Two of the pieces I ordered are great, but the other one is actually vintage, and I felt, had a very different cut and style than it appeared to in the pictures and description. It turns out that I would have to pay for the return, and it just doesn't seem worth it to me.
Like a previous reviewer said, just know there's about a chance (in my case 1/3) that you won't like what you get, and like me, you'll probably be stuck with it because it doesn't make sense to ship something back that you paid $15 for.
I've only bought, never sold and I have been disappointed too many times. I've gotten children's clothes sent as womens clothing, clothing for my daughter was not the size advertised and most recently a pair of black pants with a hole the size of a quarter on the butt! They claim to check everything before ships!?!? Even worse is there ridiculously long shipping time, they are in California and I am in MN, my last shipment took 2 weeks(!) to get to me! I have ordered stuff from China that has come quicker.
I buy from thred up occasionally. They have a great selection but are missing a few key points from each listing. They do not note WHAT the flaws are on items they say have flaws... I bought one pair of pale green pants that ended up having what looked like splattered coffee stains throughout the thigh and mid leg area. They were not wearable. I have had some good experiences though- I have gotten several expensive items for less than $7 on this site. I am not sure how they figure out their pricing as it seems a lot of items are very overpriced, while other items are very underpriced. They could probably get better prices if they described each item more and also included some measurements! I have never consigned with them or sold them clothing- I have heard they pay less than you would get for the same items at a yard sale. Easier to just donate to charity and take the tax write off. One issue I had with them was when I ordered a dress, listed as a women's brand and size. I received it and it was the children's brand from the same designer so my woman's medium dress was actually a child's medium and wouldn't have fit an adult unless they were a size 0000. I emailed them and they refunded immediately so I was happy in the end, but the refund was a credit to spend with them- NOT my money back. I will continue to buy from them occasionally, but I do so knowing that my chance of being happy with the purchase is about 50/50, so I don't spend a lot.
I've used the site 4 times and had good experience each time. Clothing was just as described. I am happy with their shipping speed and service also. It's a great way to get quality second hand clothes for growing kids. I've even got a few items for myself, from the new with tags section! Wish some items had front and back pics, but otherwise no complaints. Great option for selling your own name brand stuff too!
The price increase over the last year is ridiculous save your money because you will most likely get the wrong item that is too big or too small or wrong gender
I LOVE thredUp! If you know your size from trusted brands (H&M, Old Navy, Lauren Conrad, etc) it makes it so much easier to have a wonderful shopping experience with this site. I always get a full box of like-new, sometimes brand new, clothing with free shipping (it's so easy to spend $50, but still get a ton!). It's like Christmas morning when I get my box, love trying the new clothes on and it always makes me want to get back online and start shopping again!
Thredup isn't bad, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I sent in some items that I normally would have just donated to a local thrift shop. My clothing was from middle of the road retailers, not high end but not Walmart quality either, think Kohls, American Eagle, Lane Bryant, etc. I sent around 25 items that were all in good shape but none had tags. I got just over $12 for my bag. I was satisfied enough with that payment because, as I said above, I otherwise would have just dropped them in a donation box somewhere and got nothing. Thredup also donates the clothes they don't buy, which is good.
One thing that worries me is the bag fee. Right now, it's waived but apparently they sometimes charge you $5 as insurance that they will get their bag back. If this fee continues to be waived then I will definitely send in more clothes later on. If not, then I probably won't send any more because you could actually end up with less money that you started with. I couldn't see this working unless you are guaranteed to get at least $5 for your clothing. There is also one other thing I didn't like: the wait times. You should be prepared to wait almost two months for your bag to be inspected because it takes them that long. I was really surprised by that! They should definitely try to speed their process up quite a bit.
My advice would be to only send in items that you are okay with losing so you won't be upset if your bag only gets a few dollars or even nothing (which I've heard can happen). If you have the option and desire to bring your clothes to a local consignment shop for appraisal first or the time to try to sell your clothes at a better price at a yard sale, then go for it because you'll probably make more money that way. But if you're like me and don't have any consignment shops around and are too busy to have a hard sale, then this is a great option.
Overall I would recommend Thredup if you would be happier with a few dollars than nothing for your old clothes. I would not recommend it to people who are looking to get back a significant percentage of the money they spent on the clothes. I haven't bought anything from the site yet, but I imagine it will be fine. They have cute stuff and it's available in all sizes including juniors and plus.
I've shopped this site several times and sent in items, too. I couldn't be happier with the experience!
So far I am not really impressed. I decided I wanted to try buying some of the clothing offered online. I only ordered 2 things and it took them 4 business days to ship out the order (although it took them no time at all to charge me and their website says 1-2 business days). Now I didn't want to pay a bunch of money on shipping so I went with the standard shipping, That apparentlymeans it takes an additional 5 business days from when it was shipped to arrive via Fedex. I do a lot of online shopping and I have ordered shoes from China that got here in the same amount of time. Now, in the meantime I have been reading a lot of online reviews about people who have sent the clothes in and received barely anything. This has me somewhat concerned. If I ever get the clothes I ordered, I may just donate what I was planning to send to thredup. At least I know where they are going.
If you and someone else in your household want to use this website to purchase something, forget about it. You don't get any of the benefits since you share the same household, therefore the two (or more) or you can't have separate accounts. Seriously? I don't live at home, but I am unable to ship to my college campus. Because of this I can only ship to my home address but they won't allow me to and took away my $10 credit as well since a household member had an account. We're two separate people, why do we need to have the same account? That is ridiculous. Not all household members are on good terms. The customer service of this place is terrible.
It's fun to browse through, I love thrift shopping, just like eBay and Tradesy, the online yard sales of the world. However I really HATE how little I am getting for the bags I send in. The processing time is extremely long, but it would be worth the wait if the payout was more. I mean,. 55 cents for brand new name brand items? Seriously?
I have mixed feelings about this site… Although the items I have ordered from them were in great condition and fairly reasonably priced, sending items in to be resold is curious. I sent three big bags to them from the same post office at the same time, and they only processed two. The amount of money i was credited was extremely low. I would do better at the local consignment shop. However, I love the feeling of purging my closet and filling a bag in hopes to obtain something "new" as a reward.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
