They froze my account due to so-called suspicious activity, which meant that I could not transfer money nor use my debit card. For them to freeze a businesses funds and not offer a way to immediately rectify the situation to the owner is beyond me. They in fact completely disable a company to be able to do business, but they call it protecting the business. How is it protecting the business If you are completely taking away their ability to conduct business?

Sudden interruption of funds confirmed. First sale on my website & they halted all my brick and mortar business transfers to "verify" my account. Asked to perform tasks that are literally impossible. (I have NO Delivery!) Online customer service useless. They only tell you to call in & wait for hours. Haven't fixed it days later. Data glitches, expensive equipment. And never link your Etsy. Etsy will take a cut of EVERY transaction on Square, no matter if it's an Etsy sale or not. GO WITH YOUR BANK, no matter how much more it costs! Square is not worth the hassle. I deeply regret this choice.

Unforgivable thievery
August 11, 2022

I used the square app for the first time when I was in a pinch and could not use Venmo or Cash App, etc. The 2nd biggest job I have done for my growing small company, and I needed to run a credit card. Square decided that they were going to place a hold on the transfer, which was over one thousand dollars so I figured it would be a few days at least. That's not uncommon practice. They asked for supplemental information verifying the parties and purpose of the transaction- I provided everything I had and some things that were "optional" but not mandatory as well. Square did not help me: they took their time reviewing the information and finally sent me an email saying that my account was closed, I cannot use Square, and I will not see those funds for several months. Their customer service makes it impossible to reach a human at this stage: they flag tour phone number and have a prerecorded message that more or less says "sorry, you're SOL." You cannot imagine how this impacted my business and what's even worse… When I was unable to pay my workers, I had one maniacal laborer yelling at me and showing me he had a gun in his vehicle. I had to pay him out of pocket DOUBLE just to get him out of there and away from my customer and regular employees. I still have not seen my money, although they clearly have the funds and I guarantee that they are using these types of circumstances to collect floating interest. I cannot express my resentment of this company enough. They are high profile thieves, worse even than the guy who pulled a gun on me. 99% of the time I say I will just avoid a business and go my separate way: but at this rate, I have to communicate the message. Square is in the business of somehow legalized thievery,

I opened a squared up account and processed a payment from a customer. Square deducted a fee for the transaction but when I tried to transfer the balance they suspended my account after I submitted all documentation saying they can't verify my business. My business is registered and on file with DUNS and Bradstreet. They say I have to wait 90 days for them to transfer my funds. Such a rip off. I have filed a complaint with Consumer Protection Agency

Negative support
August 11, 2022

I called in trying to figure out where my money was because I always get it same day and to get information about why I never received an email to verify my banking info. I received an email tonight tell me they're disabling my phone support yet they're not looking at the picture of a language barrier. It would be a no-brainer if the rep does not understand the customer to transfer the call to someone that can understand them. As soon as my money hits my account and I withdraw it I will be closing my account out because I don't need the negativity that goes along with it. I am a very reasonable person even though I'm homeless with stage 4 cancer. I will not tolerate a company treating me in such a Negative manner when I requested information on my account. Apparently it's a little hard to give people information on their account as a result of the language barrier and they tend to blame the customer instead of trying to come up with ideas to assist with language barriers.

Suspended account
August 8, 2022

They deactivated my account, without explanation. Now they are holding over $5k of my funds for "90 days" even though the funds have cleared every transaction except theirs. This is money I need for medical purposes hence why i sold the items. Thanks square, your local disabled veteran.

They randomly put your account on what they call 'protective hold' to use your money. Their customer service is completely unqualified to do anything - they will give you different promises 24 hrs, 12 hrs, 5-7 days, and so on, and no one will do a thing. They just want to keep your money as long as they want it.

I will never work with them again and do not recommend them to anyone

Taken over 2 months of nurmerous emails and phone calls to get an address corrections on the 1099-K issued. I have followed their policy guidelines and provided the necessary information and they still refuse to make correction. Their customer service staffers (Abner C and Javad) are only nay sayers and incompetent. Asking same questions over and over again. They refuse to connect you with a supervisor or someone who might have the knowledge to make the correction. They are all speaking English as a second language from 3rd world countries so very difficult to understand over the phone and they do not understand English well enough to get it right. I am filing a complaint with the IRS and the BBB. I do not recommend using this company. Other cc companies I have used in the past were so much easier to work with since they are US based.

I have been using Square for the better part of 2 years now and it has been one issue after another. Their absorption of Weebly is utter garbage. The latest issue (that has yet to be resolved) is the inability of their two platforms to communicate with one another. Square's back end and their online selling platform (Weebly) have yet to communicate will with one another so even though you bulk upload an infinite amount of product on the back end with their title, SKU, description, location, and amount in stock, the online selling platform (where you actually sell product) will forever say 0 in stock so you actually can't sell anything at all. Their solution, to manually update and save each one until their engineers figure it out. Save yourselves time and trouble if you want to sell online and manage inventory. Go to Shopify or literally anyone else. Square has yet to get their $#*! together and I don't think they ever will.

Bait and switch
July 17, 2022

After going through a great deal of effort to set up my business to work with Square Up for appointments and aligning my calendar to sync up so that my clients would see appropriate days blocked off, I became comfortable and enjoyed knowing that my booking setup was in place for those wanting to schedule my services. However, Square disabled my appointment system without telling me and I only learned it by chance when showing someone how to use the website. When I signed into my account, I was presented with new Terms to which I would need to agree. Following that, my appointments site began working again. Next, a new client booked a gig and I noticed that a credit card wasn't placed on file. Apparently, the "No Show Protection" is no longer being offered in the free tier and users are being forced to upgrade to the next tier for $29 per month in order to keep this feature, a bait and switch method (if this was the original intent all along). In any case, the company knows how much trouble it would be for a busy company to switch things over, so we have no other option except to upgrade. They will get my money, but I'm telling everyone else to stay away!

Make sure you get your refund before you deactivate. I signed up for this service. I was so excited about starting my online store. After about an hour of fiddling around with the service, I realized it was not good for me. That's another story. Anyway in my confussion I for got to deactivate/cancle the account. Then I noticed they debited my bank account the folowing month. I immediatly deactivated the account. But when i attempted a refund, I could not get it because I am no longer allowed into my account even though I'm paid up for the month. I tried to call them, but if you can't log in they won't talk to you. This company has some shady business practices. I'm in the process of disputing it with my bank, but have to wait for the funds to clear. At that time I will let you know what happened.

Terrible security
July 6, 2022

Easy for taking payments, however their security is absolutely terrible. If you choose to use the square debit card, and it gets hacked or stolen and all the money drained, they will not lock the account, take forever for disputes, and good luck getting your money back. If you try to get status updates, they'll tell you the same information they told you three months ago.

I have a small self storage business. A number of customers have automatic recurring payments via Square on their credit/debit cards or bank withdrawals. When the customer vacates, I need to stop the automatic payments, but there is no obvious way to do this. I finally found an option "Cancel Recurring Invoices." The blurb below explains: This action will cancel this one payment. Which of course is not what "Cancel Recurring Invoices" means. All your action does is cancel the payment for that month.

Last night I spent 1.5 hours on their Chat Help line (they no longer let you talk to a representative) and never did get the info I need to permanently cancel a recurring invoice. They took over half an hour to answer my last post, which was: we've gone home for the night.

Square's desktop requires looking all over the place to stop a recurring charge, and even then all you get is stopping one payment. Their customer service is utterly inadequate, and they are contemptuous of their customers' time.

I want to file a complaint against Square. I have a small travel company located in Los Angeles. We have been using Square for over 6 years. When the pandemic hit, we had lots of consumer refund requests and we didn't have enough staff to process everything on time. There were some clients who decided to file a credit card dispute with their credit card company. I totally understand their decisions. Because the disputes went to Square, they decided to put a reserve on our account, which is 40% of all sales volume. I actually understood their decision as well because of the credit card disputes we had.
However, as of June this year, we issued more than 1.3 million refunds to clients and the credit card disputes have almost disappeared. We hired new staff and tried to take care of every refund request. But Square still keeps the reserve on our account. This is becoming more and more concerning to us.
For example, we only receive 60% of the clients' payment when they make a booking with us, and when they come back in 4 month and decide to cancel the trip, we are supposed to refund 100% of the payment minus a little cancellation fee, but Square hasn't even transferred us their payment. We still only have 60% of the total payment but now we need to refund almost 100% of what they paid! These similar transactions are draining our bank account!
I believe our business is just one of hundreds of thousands facing the same problem, I demand Square to take the correct action and refund our reserve right now. I will share my experience with all regulatory bodies until they do. If anyone has a similar experience, please feel free to contact me, and we can together form a stronger force against this unfair treatment.

Have been utilizing square for my business as a licensed cosmetologist since 2011 without issues except for unexpected fees. However Friday 6/24/22 after finishing a few clients, I needed to transfer money over to my bank account and was told my account is "under review" for suspicious activity. I called and was unable to get any resolve. They have no fraud department so I'm not even sure who is "investigating my account". I asked to speak with a manager, was told one would return my call by end of business day Friday. It's now Monday 6/27/22, I'm still unable to withdraw money or get any customer service from the company. My business funds are on hold without reason. Was given a hold time of 24 hours and we are well past that. I have not had any charge backs, refunds, etc that would initiate a review. The lack of warning, explanation, compassion or integrity during a time that is already hard on business owners is unacceptable.

Square will assign a customer rep to your account while signing up. The point of sale system and online dashboard are great. HOWEVER, their customer service after you become a square customer is terrible to say the least. Anytime an issue or question arises, it is impossible to get square to resolve the matter. The square support team are simply receptionist, with zero power to get ANY issue or matter resolved. Instead, they say they email your concern to their team and the issue may take 48 hrs to resolve. In our case there were issue after issue with there services and it did not ever get resolved, going on over a month. To compound the matter further, whenever square has a issue with your account, the hold your funds for weeks or months at a time, with nobody to call and handle the issue causing said delays. Further, square does what the call random account security checks, which is nothing more than them holding your funds for no reason. No large or small business can afford to wait 48hrs to weeks at a time for a resolution to a matter and no business can afford to have their payment processor hold their funds from products and services sold, which are needed to pay staff, bill, and inventory. Avoid square at all cost. Don't believe me? Try this real fast. Call square and act like you are signing up for a new account, and you will get white glove treatment, with a rep that speaks english clearly, whereas once you become a client of square, you get transferred to non english speaking reps, that are receptionist at best, with zero power to fix or resolve a matter a merchant may have. Why is an english speaking rep important? Well square requires that you use your email information to verify your account when you call in for one, and having to repeat this over and over to someone that does not understand is wasting a business owners time. Having to repeat an account issue over and over to reps that do not understand clear english is also a waste of a business owners time. Not having a dedicated account rep, that knows you and your account, as to save time and not have to speak with 50 account reps that get nothing resolved, is also important to a business owner. Square is an embarrassing company. We closed 3 accounts with them and are informing our clients and vendors due the same, as to avoid such nightmares in the future.
