I used this company to repair my credit but instead they ruined it and kept my $500 security deposit. I am reporting them to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau http://complaints.consumerfinance.gov and I encourage others who's been scammed to do so as well. I was told that after a year I would get my security deposit back and never agreed to them keeping it to continue with a card because my credit was not improving. After seeing that they were keeping my deposit I tried to contact them a bunch of times but could never get through. They finally started emailing me once I stopped paying their fees on my money. They stated that the account was past due and they were keeping my deposit to cover it but I still owe them almost $200. They said my account was closed but on my credit report it remains open and racking up late fees plus damaging my credit. I told them the account was still open but they insist that it was closed and that I owed them money and they would continue until I pay it. Don't do business with this company. They lie about everything and steal from customers. This is so not fare to people trying to improve their credit.

Bad Business
July 21, 2023

Self Inc, Is a Bad Business on the Inside that looks good on the outside. I'm on the outside looking into my past bad Bad and Stressful ‍ Experiences with Self Inc holding my Money. They love holding the Money Bag because it Benefits them and their Business but they will never again get the chance or opportunity to hold my money for 2 months again. I finally got my money over two months period waiting for my money. I did eventually get my money because I called them every and I filed against them with 4 Consumer Organizations Like the BBB

WASTE
July 20, 2023

This is nothing but a debt problem and a scam to get you to pay pay then pay for them to finally give you a debit card then you pay some more! Find a secured credit card with a company that will charge you a yearly fee to report good credit for you. Self is bad business throwing money away.

Firstly, when you pay off your loan, get ready for your credit score to DRRRROOPPP. Then, god forbid you use their credit card, which is secured with your own money/deposit and you try to close it. They'll make SURE you have a "balance" left (of their own fees) and then keep adding interesting and late fees when you refuse to GIFT them money. They harass and threaten to report you to the bureaus, thereby doing the exact OPPOSITE of what this company supposedly aims to do. For $40 of their own fees, they are threatening, and relentless in their thievery. Save yourself the headache and DONT SIGN UP

A TOTAL SCAM
July 5, 2023

I thought I was signing up for a saving account and to monitor my credit. I decided I wanted to stop after a few months because they were debiting me almost $40 a month and not all of that was going into my savings. I tried to contact them through the app but could not find a way. Could not find a phone number that I could speak to a live person, an address or email. When I found a number through a credit agency, it is an animated system that hangs up on you when it's done with what it has to say about the topic. There is no option to speak to a human. I changed my debit card # because I lost my card. This stopped the debits from Self and I did not think much about it until I noticed a 70 point drop in my credit score. I was in the 700's. Not now. I am so angry because the credit report says I owe Self $675 yet they emailed me the other day saying they are sending me a check for $26. This makes no sense. If I owe them why are they allegedly sending me the $26? I have not received the check yet.Self Lead Bank makes it so you can't contact them to cancel and then reports you to the credit agencies if you stop the payments, so you pay them the absurd amount they report you owe, just so you can't repair your credit and they get more than you would have paid in the monthly payments. I only paid them in Feb, March and stopped in May and June- so how do I owe them nearly $700 as reported to the credit agencies. This has been the worst company I have ever dealt with. I already have reported them to the BBB. I do not want to give them another dime more of my hard earned money. Self/Lead Bank needs to send information to the credit agencies retracting that I owe them a dime immediately and send me a letter of apology or I am to my attorneys office!
I'D GIVE THEM A ZERO IF I COULD.

I have been a SELF customer for 18 months. I have always paid my bills on time and utilized the VISA credit card they gave me and paid it off monthly. I then find out 2 months before the close of my final deposits they "hold in a CD account" they have shut down my credit card and closed my account. The only reason given is "unable to verify customer information!" This is garbage as I now have over $700 in their CD and the representative said she doesn't have any information as to when they will return my money.
I STRONGLY ADVISE anyone looking into using SELF inc to RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION.

So I signed up in June 2021 for the credit builder account. I missed about 2 payments due to things changing in the year. Being late I paid a little extra for late fees. I payed $25 every month up until June 2023. I never signed up for their secured card for whatever reasons I already had secured cards. So I didnt need theirs. So I completed my term 6/18/23 they told me that my deposit will be sent to me a certain day after my account was closed. Because I was complete It was exactly two weeks from my complete date. Today June 30,2023 I recieved my payout for $521.00 into my account. As far as my credit score I really wasnt monitoring it. I just know it was going up and down due to other non related accounts. This payout came right on time. This will help me add to the deposit to move into my new apartment next week. Whoop, whoop! Will I use Self again? Yes and this time I will set my husband up. I was not offered any incentive or payment for this review this is a real person with a real review

This company stole my money, and then had the worst customer service ever. They had me make on time payments for two years straight, only to tell me that they closed my account, for not being able to get important documents from me they got 300 dollars from me. Not to mention never got my credit score to move more than 40 points. I will be contacting the BBB on this situation not fair l want what's rightfully my hard earned money NOW!

I have been using self for 3 years now and have absolutely no complaints. They have done even more than I expected for my credit. The one time I had a question their customer service dept. was extremely helpful and very prompt and polite. All of their correspondence has been easy to understand. I have and will continue to refer family and friends to them.
Thank you SELF for being what you say you are. It is comforting to know that their are still companies that follow through.

Self is the worst! Had this a acct for a few years. Let them convince me into getting the self credit card. Which they take ur own money that you save up and add to credit card. And after a year when ur saving is done you don't get ur money back. They don't even put ur full saving on ur credit card and they slso start charging you high interest rate on the self credit card that's ur own money you save up on. Credit card balance wound up bring way more then it saving that you never get back! Don't do it trust me self is a compete rip off! They pitch that craptgst they out here to help you build ur credit but they out here doing more damage to it! A waste of time and money!

Self just sent me an email regarding my identity. I thought this a little odd since I have a card with them in good standing for over two years. For a reason, which Self cannot explain to me, Self wants me to send them a copy of my bank statements and a picture of my government ID.

Sorry Self but not only will I not send you those two items but I am going to find out who to contact regarding the matter. My bank account is none of your GD business. Period! You opened an account for me two years ago and now you want all this.

And, please get someone to answer your customer service calls who speaks understandable English. I know I may be a minority but please.

I opened up a self credit builder account to build my credit & save some money. They opened up a "loan" which I now had to make payments on. The "loan" never did really exist & I couldn't touch it until I had submitted enough payments. THEN and only then could I open up a credit card attached to the loan. I could switch my accumulated payment amount to the credit card if I needed money. Of course there is a fee!
So they charged me for my credit builder account THEN when I switched over funds they charged me on the credit card. So they're double charging me and on my money!
I got tired of this nonsense. My credit score went down considerably and has never recovered!
I finally closed both accounts. They took whatever they needed from my payments to justify what was owed on both accounts & sent me the difference. Imagine my surprise when they sent me a bill a month later stating I still owed them $8.16! This was last November.
I let this slide until today (May) and called them up on it. The last informed me I owed them over $33.00! How does it go from $8. To $33. In just a few months? "Well we have interest and fees" she said "and you didn't pay your balance". "They took it out & sent me the difference".I said.
It's obvious they're scamming people.
STAY AWAY!

They closed my account without any objective justification, they withdrew money from my account and I've been waiting for weeks because they don't return and so far they don't want to, I filed a claim for damages. Stay away from this company.
