As a lead on one of the next door neighborhoods, I find that a vocal minority all too often flags posts simply because they dislike the person who made the post or because they disagree with what the person posted regardless of whether that post violated nextdoor guidelines. It gets even worse when the leads of that community are friends with the vocal minority and in essence creates censorship on the site against anyone who has an opposing point of view to the vocal minority. I can't imagine that censorship of differing opinions is what Nextdoor intended when the site was created but that is how it frequently plays out
I have shared my bad city library experience after tax-paid library fee yet being prevented from using it in the past 3-4 years; library robbery?
My past 3 posting of shared community commerce experience has vanished in hours; now my Nextdoor.com account has "inaccessible" for penalize my "shared experience" as " personal dispute". Public library service deprivation - violation of Civil Rights is "personal dispute"? Are you kidding me? Who is silencing us, yet took our precious personal domcile information in the name of "neighborhood"? Corporate adversary censoring?
Just an update to my review... I've come to realize that ND is kind of a risky website to take part in. They require your real name so there's no anonymity. Increasingly, there are more and more arguments and insults and complaints and people getting all worked up. And some people are breaking the rules and not using their real name, so they have anonymity, but I don't. I no longer feel safe posting anything that even might possibly offend someone in some way unintentionally. I don't feel like I can be relaxed on ND and I have to watch everything I say/write very carefully because it would be very easy for someone to find me and do whatever (assault, kill, vandalize, harass, etc.). I've had 2 instances where for some reason I was singled out and personally attacked (directly named and specifically insulted in the threads) and it really put the fear into me. I had done nothing wrong. ND did not use to be like this a few years ago.
I've noticed that each person has a neighborhood map based on their address. That person can only see posts from others who live in that neighborhood area. But I saw that the county (local gov't organization) joined ND and posted... and they were able to get replies from all over the county, not just a handful of neighborhoods around their physical address. In the cases of missing pets or humans or natural disasters or whatever... we should be able to reach large areas like that. ND is too restrictive when it comes to who can access posts depending on where they live. My friend lives about 4 miles away in the same town as me with the same zip code, but we can't see each others posts because for some reason we're not in the same "neighborhood" on ND. Whereas my parents live about 8 miles away in the next city/town over with a different zip code and for some reason they ARE in my "neighborhood" and we can see each others posts. It makes no sense, and sometimes it's very frustrating.
Also, there should be an option to attach photos when private messaging someone.
I submitted a post (that received 46 likes) with zero identifying information commenting on inappropriate behavior in my neighborhood. I was suspended. Others, however, have posted identifying information, including photos of cars with license plates clearly showing and those posts remain in place even when requests are submitted to have them removed (for the safety of the person identified in the post). When I disputed the decision... I just received platitudes... not sure they even bother to read the threads... or else their reading comprehension is very poor.
It appears that there are 'members' employed or affiliated by NextDoor in some manner, who police. These members are special. They have power to flag and ban over anything THEY might 'think' is a violation of ND terms. I've had this happen 2 times now, and both times had NO idea why I was being restricted! Lol,
IMO, NextDoor will kill itself with these ridiculous Kindergarten level tactics. We are adults. When you allow bored, haggard old cat ladies to administer your Social media site, ridiculous things are going to happen. This appears to be the case for NextDoor.
This site clearly says no politics in their terms but this does not apply to Trump supporters. I noticed someone was promoting a Trump rally in my community. I tried to flag the post because I thought nextdoor.com was not the proper platform to do this. I was told it did not meet the requirements but here's where it gets weird when I tried to leave a comment and voice my opinion nextdoor.com disabled my right to leave a comment on that post.
Just disgusting. I get it your Trump supporters but the entire community should have the same rights regardless of their race, color or their political party. My opinion matters just as much as someone else's. Shame on you for political segregation and violating the rights of everyone who is not a Trump supporter.
I have been on this site for 3 years and posted maybe 3 times! I made a very valid post about terrible dog owners walking their out of control dogs, I was attacked by 3 people ruthlessly and I defended myself keeping my cool. I might add, I have 25 people like my post. I was called a Bigiot, Bully, said I slandered people and, was told to move. My post was up for two days and somehow they closed my account and refuse to open it back up. I regret ever signing up for this terrible platform. Thanks for nothing
STAY AWAY:
Using the site compromises your safety (privacy) and pits neighbor against neighbor
Heated debate on school name change fueled hatred and fake racism.
Scammers use the site to promote fake donation solicitations.
Site encouraged illegal commercial sized bake sale.
Kids used the site to play pranks.
Overall, I like the resource and have gotten some great info and recommendations. The only problem I have is with the back and forth fighting and the overly critical replies making me often reluctant to post.
They require an address and phone to post a 'found dog.' I get the phone part but my address has nothing to do with the dog. Still, I tried posting but the site wouldn't take my phone number. The reps said to send private information -a utility bill, etc- something recent to show where I live, which has nothing to do with the dog. I don't have a recent bill and that's unnecessary personal information. Why are they asking for it: (a) they're going to sell it, or (b) there's no logical reason behind the request, they just want it, period. The reps send form letters in Emails.
My experience with Nextdoor has generally been positive. It promotes community communicaton and interaction. I enjoy seeing the interests of those in my community and their desires to join together in sharing information which can sustain and improve the community. Sometimes individuals post information which is more personal than community focused, but it is only a minor issue.
I Love this App for a number of reasons! I love that I can stay in touch with what is happening in the neighborhood. Crimes, Garage Sales, Lost Pets, Strange Persons, For Sale Items!
Helpful for a woman that is new to a certain neighborhood - especially if she recently moved or isn't familiar with the area!
Overall it's a nice website. I'm not too keen on some of the political views I read. Sometimes it feels like I'm looking at Facebook. I do like the free/pay for good feature as well as successful reunions of last pets.
Good, keeping up with local neighborhood issues. Catching up with neighbors that don't see with schedule.
Learned of best roofing specialists in area that needed.
The site is the best place to find daily events and activity in the area. Keep up the good work. This will help individual to figure out the true color of the new born City (future). Let the morality prevails.
I love to go to Nextdoor to see what is going on in the community for safety issues. I also do animal rescue and it is an awesome place to report lost and found animals.
As a lead I do not like that my neighborhood does not seem to participate much. Any suggestions to get them inspired?!
I have found that if you don't have to respond to a comment you are better off! If you make a statement that others disagree with, you will be blocked from the conversation! It is a pretty sad situation that only one way thinking is the only answer!
I've been pleased to receive recommendations, reviews, and household and gardening information. It is nice to have a larger population nearby to ask than just my own neighborhood.
I listed numerous items and sold them quickly and easily to folks in neighborhoods I am familiar with. This is a great advantage to selling on Swip Swap or other venues.
Answer: The negative reviews are honest reactions to being duped into sharing too much personal information (that Nextdoor now owns and will NEVER delete and will continue to sell to advertisers until your dying day) to join a site that seems friendly on the surface, but which does NOTHING to protect users. I was bullied by a convicted murderer, who is a Lead in my neighborhood--and I was banned from the site for complaining. Leads are nothing more than early adopters of the site who have been assigned power over other users so that Nextdoor does not have to police it's own site. In short: No. The negative reviews are not wrong. Heed them! I wish I had known before it was too late!
Answer: Forget about nextdoor and leads. Get a life, a real one. Don't waste your time with toxic online communities that tend to get the worst out of people. My advise is run away while you still have some dignity left.
Answer: Kay is right. That is their policy. However, don't expect them to hold to it. We have leads unfairly removing only some people's comments and Nextdoor does nothing about it. Best bet, dump nextdoor.
Answer: Neighborhood. Rocks is in development. Another 6 months.
Answer: Truth is like oil and water. As long as the scam artist have enough venture capital (other people's money) they will continue to shake the bottle leaving it a murky view obscuring the truth. Run out of cash, they'll be exposed for the incompetent boobs they are and the top dogs will clear out their bank accounts and move on to the next scam. One look at their "leading edge tech" pulled right out of the 1980's is proof enough they will die in the tar pits just like the fellow dinosaurs. Want a state of the art app? Answer: Dallas, SiteJabber rates it at 16%. It would surely rate lower if there weren't so many fake positive reviews. Folks review Nextdoor either 1 or 5. The fives read like ads about Nextdoor's features and potential. The ones are written by real people and give accounts of how awful their experiences were.
Answer: Several other reviewers on this site have had the same thing happen to them. We have been fully banned from nextdoor (beyond just "suspension"), but they keep our profiles, and sometimes our names still appear in the neighbor registry. They refuse to remove us fully, I suppose, in an attempt to misrepresent our endorsement and participation there. It's clearly unethical, but their TOS states that they can do this, as any nd apologist will point out.
Answer: Here's a tidy answer from corporate... Hi Colleen, Thanks for getting back to me. Our Community Guidelines prohibit posting about Lead activity on the main newsfeed. If your Leads are inactivate and youre concerned about moderation in your neighborhood, you should reach out directly to Nextdoor Support. If you have any specific concerns I can help you with at this time, please let me know. Best, Amanda Nextdoor However, the minute you alert corporate to issues with leads in your community you'll find your account terminated. They are very protective of the information surrounding who really is controlling the activities on the boards. Most people in my community are under the misguided impression that corporate is in control. They don't even consider it is their neighbor who sits in judgement.
Answer: Nextdoor wants your full legal name, house number and address and your email address that they link all together. As an added bonus... They have a little map that you can click on. That way if, OMG, you offend someone the little map leads them straight to your house. Run, do not walk, away from this site. No good comes from Nextdoor.
Answer: Your name and address will be known to everyone who uses the NextDoor application and website. I don't suggest using it. I recently discovered that low income apartments in ghetto areas might be able to use the application to do crime. Car theft, asaaults, kidnapping and just about everything else under the sun.
