NetSpend's reputation is largely tarnished by pervasive customer dissatisfaction, particularly related to its customer service and account management. Many users report significant challenges in activating cards, accessing funds, and receiving timely support, often facing long wait times and unhelpful representatives. Concerns about account security and unauthorized closures further exacerbate frustrations. While a few customers have expressed loyalty and satisfaction in the past, the overwhelming sentiment reflects a lack of reliability and transparency. Overall, potential customers are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative options for prepaid services.

Worst company to have a pre-paid account with. We bought a card and were told it wasn't going to be active until we called to activate the card. We were told the money put on the card was going to be accessible, regardless of time before we activated it. I called to activate the card and there was a 0 balance. I was charged inactivity fees and I couldn't get any of the fees disputed. The representatives kept saying that the terms and conditions stated the fees so they were valid. Instead of understanding we were given incorrect information, they refused to work with me at all. This company will lie to you and then take your money. I hope you are okay with having your money stolen and dealing with dishonesty if you keep a netspend account. I will never recommend this company and I wish there was a legal way to hold them accountable for lying.
Got this card as a gift card from a friend. Trying to activate this without any social iDs and they would not allow as their ONLY INTENTION IS TO MAKE MONEY THROUGH INACTIVITY FEE IMPOSED ON THE CARD.
They keep transferring you to the IVR to reset the PIN and IVR does not have that option.
THEY ARE A FRAUD... DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR SOCIAL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
Netspend offers prepaid debit cards, not gift cards.
Like other financial companies that offer debit cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.
This means that we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information.
If you need assistance or have questions, please email [email protected].
Thank you,

Basically just a massive hassle and scam. I got the card to use while traveling through the USA. Although I am a citizen of the USA I am not a resident as I reside abroad. After verifying my ID I deposited $300 on the account. Thankfully, I didn't do more. Then after 1 day they blocked the account because I had no proof of address. Then they treated me like a bum and a criminal. Sick of people discriminating against trans people like this so called bank. Protect transients everywhere!
We're sorry to hear about your experience. Netspend, along with any other financial institution, does not discriminate based on race, gender, sex, etc during the identity verification process. Please send us an email to [email protected] if you still need assistance with your account.
If you want your money like Netspend advertises "up to 2 days early" you might as well forget it. One week I get paid on Thursday, next on a Friday. This card is inconsistent with deposits. Some weeks I get paid even later than any of my coworkers. Just don't expect early payday with hassel free banking because it isn't going to happen.
Unfortunately, we don't have control over when deposits are sent to us. This means that we aren't able to say when they are going to arrive. Rest assured, we post deposits when we get them. If you have questions about the direct deposit process, please email us at [email protected]. We are happy to speak with you.

I purchased a $500. Netspend in Texas in March 2020, in Texas when Covid hit, as emergency funds for my return trip to Canada. I did not need to use the card. Today I tried to activate the card and was unable to do so. I called the number provided and was told I needed to send a copy of my Social Security card and a recent invoice for my home. I do not have a Social Security number as I am a Canadian citizen. I also tried to change my address to my Canadian home. The clerk was unable to input that in to their system as we do not use zip codes in Canada. We use a 6 charcter alpha/numeric postal code.
I asked for a supervisor and waited 32 minutes before I hung up in digust.
When I called back and went through all the same BS, I asked to close the account and send me a check for the balance of $500.00. They would only send the check to the old address in Texas where I have not been in 31 months.
They would not even record my Canadian address. Having read the 672 complaints filed against this company, I feel I have been scammed out of my money.
I strongly suggest everyone avoid these thieves - Just read the complaints at
https://www.complaintsboard.com/netspend-the-companies-practices-and-hidden-charges.
Note... I am out $500.00

I have had a Netspend account for 15 years. Same address and all info the same. They locked my account - I still don't know why. I have sent in all the documents they asked for and they still won't unlock! I even went to the social security office and got a temporary card as I couldn't locate my original. Still the ignorant employees of Netspend won't unlock my account! I even sent in my irs tax form 1099 which states my ss number and name along with bank statements, electric and cable bills and copy of my drivers license! Still can't get anyone with a brain to unlock my account. I have gone 5 days without my medication because I can't access my funds! And still no answers and no one who speaks English. May have to get a lawyer and editor of our huge local Seattle newspaper involved! Complete incompetence and they have all my id and documents!
We're sorry to hear that. Please email us at [email protected] and we will look into it.

Netspend Visa cards seem like a scam. I could not activate my card using the automated system. The customer rep. That I finally was able to reach by dialing "0" several times on the menu pretended to take my info. Then booted me back to the automated menu. And Speedway will not refund your money, which is where the card was purchased. $100 down the toilet.
I went to deposit money in my bank account but instead it went to a prepaid card I never put on my paypal account. Paypal is having a tough time getting it back. This is a straight up theft of funds. I dont own a card and can not sign into the account. Pay pal is now looking into how the fake paypal card from Netspend got on my account. Never once did I use a prepaid card in the past all of a sudden now!

My father purchased these cards and put money on it for my boys as a Christmas gift, my father passed right before Christmas and we found the cards shortly after. I couldn't bring myself to activating them right away plus my boys did not need or wish for anything at that time. Went to activate it and there was NO MONEY on them even though I have the receipts for 50 each, because even though they were never even activated, NETSPEND charges an inactivity fee for each month... 5 freaking dollars a month. ASSININE!
We're sorry to hear about that. Please send us an email to [email protected], we will be glad to look into it further.
Netspend ripped me off of $150.00! I bought a prepaid card and a fraudster got ahold of my card and tried to take my money. When I addressed the problem Neyspend ran me around for three weeks until they finally told me I was SOL. Even with the receipt! What a sham! Sean Olsen

Not only did I try like 6 times before calling I spent 30 minutes calling you guys asking to activate my card and you guys asking for my social security, adress, email, phone number. Just for the guy to ask for the adress 3 times and then resetting us for doing the process over again. Honestly I'm gonna do my best to report this company and let it be known for the fraud it is. $#*!ing idiots man. And ol Ronaldo can't speak Spanish. Use a better fake name dumbass.

I have had a NetSpend account for over 5 years with no issues ever on my account, the account has always been in good standing. I recently called and spoke with a NetSpend employee reference my dad NetSpend account as he has passed away and I was inquiring how I could gain access to his funds to help pay the remainder of his bills and lo and behold just over a week later it comes up one of their employees or the same employee ( the supervisor would not be specific) reported that my social security number was deceased so when I went to purchase lunch after just making a purchase last week and making purchases continuously since the conversation with this employee my account is now being declined for a purchase on two cards that I have on the account. Both cards being declined naturally I call NetSpend who advises me that I am deceased and my account has been closed with my remaining balance which is a substantial amount now unavailable to me and no possible way of retrieving my funds. After speaking with Social Security Administration and NetSpend back and forth several conversations between the two entities only to come to an end result with the Social Security Administration telling me that my social security number has not been attached to any notifications or any information anywhere within their systems stating that I am deceased nor has it been sent to anyone by Social Security Administration. At this time the supervisor I'm speaking with advised that she is fully aware and has validated that I am very much alive and that my social security is very much active then advises me she is closing my account and I will never be eligible for another NetSpend account for the rest of my life! How messed up is that? Is there anyone reading this that can tell me, you have a valid case and you can sue the brakes off of NetSpend! Someone please tell me this because they still have my funds and I have all sorts of bills you and being that I live pretty much week by week and check my check they have really screwed me over! Unfortunately I am forced to select an overall rating or I cannot submit my review or they would get nothing but negative from me!
Sorry to hear about your experience. Please send us an email to [email protected] so we can look into it further.
I just tried to activate a replacement card and because I DID know the exact day I started banking with them two years I was told sorry can't help you and shut me down. I can't get to a live person now even with my social. On the website I don't have a history with them and I'm now losing my storage unit. I'm going to the inspector general about this. Gobank did the same to me years ago. It took me months to get my own money. Never again for me. Report them.
We're sorry to hear you are having trouble with activating a replacement card. Please send us an email to [email protected] if you still need assistance.
Im pretty frustrated with this company, I was visiting USA 3 months ago and I bought the prepaid card that I could never activate because the customer service never answered me, I finished my vacation and before I returned to my country they answered the phone and agreed to send a check with the refund to a friend address here in the USA, but the check never arrived, I returned to the USA a few days ago, 3 months have passed and they never sent me the check, I called and they told me that they had the wrong address, very strange because they made me repeat it several times and they also repeated it and it was correct, I asked them to activate the card because I would be here for 10 more days, but, they told me that my account was closed and that they could only send me the check, I asked if they could send it to my friend's name because I'm foreign and I don't have a bank account in this country, which they said no, I'm about to go back to my country again and they didn't want to give me another card to use while I'm here so I think I already lost my money, they don't send the check and they don't want to activate the card in order to use it, I talked to at least 4 people from customer service because suddenly and they cut me off the call I was on the phone for more than 2 hours not to get any of my money $200

SCAMMMMMMM! Do not buy! Bought the card in a QFC grocery store, and called even to activate but the receptionists kept sending me to an auto-activate via automated system. After 5 calls, same thing, never got the card activated. Also now they have all my info prob to sell, social security, name, address. MetaBank is a SCAM!

Somebody was stealing my money over time off my NetSpend card. Only when they start making big purchases for almost $100 that it started to be noticeable. Contact NetSpend they told me that they could not find no fraudulent claim. Because my card was charged over long period of time. Mind you without me knowing. To me they didn't care cuz they were receiving a portion of that money
