I had an extremely frustrating experience with Mex Rent a Car, and after doing more research, I realized I'm far from the only one. This company appears to have a well-documented pattern of scamming customers, especially international travelers. When I arrived to pick up my car, I was told I had to buy third-party liability insurance for $30 a day. I showed proof that I already had coverage through my personal auto insurance, but they rejected it. Then they moved the goalpost, saying my insurance had to have been active for at least 45 days to qualify—something I was never told in advance. My policy had just renewed, so they claimed it didn't count, even though it was valid and comprehensive. Since my original booking through Priceline was non-refundable, I was forced to pay the additional daily charges or be stranded without a car. From what I've seen online, this is a common tactic used by Mex. They often advertise super low prices, but when you show up, they find ways to deny your coverage and upsell you on overpriced insurance. Many customers also report being charged for pre-existing damage or being misled about vehicle availability unless they agree to upgrades or extra fees. The whole operation feels predatory. They rely on fine print, vague "company policies," and pressure tactics to squeeze more money out of people who are already locked in by non-refundable bookings. I strongly urge anyone considering this company to read the reviews and avoid Mex Rent a Car at all costs. It's not just bad service—it's a business model built on deception.

DON'T TRUST MEX

DON'T TRUST MEX: FRAUD!

For our holiday in Bulgaria we booked and paid a rental car with Mex online. As requested in the booking confirmation e-mail, we brought the car rental voucher and a credit card (for the bond) to the pick-up.
After handing in the car rental voucher, we were asked to sign some documents - all in Bulgarian -. I asked for English documents to know what we were signing and they referred us to their website for the English version ("but it were all standard documents"). Stupid, but we trusted them and so we signed.
Then they asked for my credit card to secure the bond. The terminal as well was in Bulgarian, but it was about €1000 (the amount we were expecting for the bond), so I confirmed with my pin.
It was until after our holiday, that we realised the 'bond' had actually been taken out of our account.
We e-mailed with Mex for days, in which they kept stating that they couldn't give me any information because they couldn't find our file. Suddenly they found 'it': a walk-in contract (without reservation) for the amount of about €1000. They claimed that the online reservation was a no show and that we were just a walk-in. Even though all the documents are in my name, with my confidential information and for the same period of time! But since I signed and gave my credit card, there's nothing more I can do...

SO BE CAREFUL, 'CAUSE THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY!

Be careful with this car rental. It is a total scam. Though you may find its rate is cheaper than other rental agencies it'll find a way to charge you more when you return the car. They will hold a $500 security deposit and they will find any reasons to not refund to you. If a bit of sand in your car they will charge you. A piece of napkin they will charge you. They will take outt something that you dont even know and said you used it or break it. Another words you wont get your held deposit back. Totally scam!

MexRentACar at Puerto Vallarta airport location. As per my Car Hire Voucher, which I received after prepaying for the rental online, "Third Party Liability Protection" insurance was included, and I had a letter from my credit card company, which I used to pay for the rental, stating that I also have "Collision Damage Waiver" insurance coverage. This has always been good enough to rent a car with no additional insurance necessary. MexRentACar desk clerk Jose forced me to buy their "Optional - Supplemental Liability Insurance", as written on their invoice, costing an additional $200, which was more than twice what I paid for the rental car. He would not release the car unless I buy it and stated that his computer system required that I buy this "Optional" insurance. When I refused, he went ahead and charged my credit card anyway and signed, that is scribbled something on the signature line of the invoice, for me. I only noticed this after as it was late in the afternoon, I was tired from an international flight, and I was in a hurry due to check into my hotel. Upon returning home and contacting MexRentACar with my complaint of extortion and fraud on their part I was told that there's nothing they can do about it, and no refund, not even a partial refund has been issued to date. I hope other people find this helpful when considering renting from MexRentACar. I can provide proof of everything I stated here. I am in the process of disputing this fraudulent charge from MexRentACar with my credit card company as well. By the way, there was no new damage of any kind on the car when I returned it, i.e., no accident or other damage occurred during my time of renting it.

Horrible

Ft. Lauderdale location. MEX Rent a car is exactly what it sounds like, a 3rd world country car rental facility ran by a cartel. Rental car facility is offsite.
The shuttle bus driver was rude. Flight arrivals are fickle and they charge you extra if you are not at the facility at the specified time. (You have to wait in a long line to be served and they don't factor that in) I was in town for my dad's funeral and this sick facility totally took advantage of me. They tacked on an insurance fee, debit card fee ($50/day), and they gave me the car with no gas. We went to the beach the night before returning the car and my son had granola on the way to the airport. They charged me $250 to vacuum the car. They also tried to charge the card additional fees that couldn't be explained. I ended up having to close out the card.
