AVOID AT ALL COSTS! ITEMS STOLEN, DESTROYED, AND MORE!
Worst moving experience ever? Let's review:
-The cancelled my move ONE HOUR before scheduled pickup. I had to find local college guys to help me move everything I own into a garage as our lease was up that day- it took 7.5 hours!
-On the second attempt they only took half my belongings and left the other half on the side of the road! Seriously!
-They took a piece of furniture I told them NOT to take. When I asked them to take it off the truck they said "Sorry, once it's on the truck we can't take it off." They then sped off. They then LOST that piece of furniture and offered only $70 as compensation! (You might call this theft).
-They lost over half a dozen of my other items and it took three moves to get back most, but not ALL of our belongings- some are still missing! How do you lose a 100 pound dresser?!?!
-THEY CAUSED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO OUR BELONGINGS!
-Ultimately half of our belongings were lost or damaged.
Got a worse moving experience? I'd love to hear it.
THEY CANCELLED MY PICKUP ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT AND OFFERED NO COMPENSATION.
I was flying out 12 hours after the cancellation at the end of the month when all the alternatives are booked. No compensation was offered. The experience was honestly traumatizing. The reason for cancellation was that there was construction near my apartment. I tried to communicate that there is a space away from the construction site available for parking where all the other moving companies park and that my apartment property manager is offering to direct the moving truck. There was neither legal nor logistical problem with parking the truck but they did not listen and cancelled at 1pm on the 30th of the month. I had to fly out early the next morning. The level of stress they incurred was traumatizing.
Basically the customer service is nice and talks a lot of big talk but does not even make efforts to come through for you.
Do NOT use this company.
I have been trying to get my stuff back for weeks, and they literally cannot seem to find which warehouse it's located in. I've hired movers multiple times to pick up my stuff in the warehouse that Makespace has given me, and they gave me the wrong address. So I'm stuck paying thousands of dollars in fees because of errors by the company.
I would HIGHLY recommend storing your stuff in a location where you know where it is. I'm living through a nightmare right now.
I had a fantastic experience using Makespace after temporarily storing my items with the pandemic. The offering they have is a great value for the price. My items were retuned intact, but because I chose not to store fragile items, like china or glassware as a lot of these reviews are claiming. They were very transparent to not store these items, as this is a cautionary hazard with any moving/valet storage company.
In the simplest terms possible. I trusted MakeSpace to store our priceless action figures from some of the first NY ComicCons ever. They lost them and said they'd look for them. Never found them, then tried to make us write up a claim in a limited timeframe for items that are so amazingly precious to us that THEY LOST. We are ABSOLUTELY LIVID. This business seems to loose a lot of stuff, from what I have read. Absolutely unacceptable. Steer clear and store the items somewhere else.
They advise they will be here at 8 they show up at 12 and the crew texts all day long and do not do there job worst company ever to work for. I advise stay clear from the company a complete rip off. They show up with no tools and wonder how this company operates
PLEASE, PLEASE pay attention to this. MakeSpace IS A SCAM.
After being told my movers would arrive between 8-11am I received a text message at 10:50 from the moving team saying, "we'll be there in 20-30 depending on traffic". 50 minutes later, nothing. I so texted them and received a message saying, "we're en route". At this point it was 11:45 -- 45 MIN LATE FROM THE LAST POINT OF THE TIME WINDOW. Then about 20-25 minutes later, I received a message from a customer service agent - not the movers who had been texting me - saying there was nowhere to park, so they left.
Interesting, because there were places to park, including where I parked my car to ensure there was a designated spot. The customer service rep was very apologetic and said she'd call the team. She called them, and called me back maybe 40 minutes later only to say she couldn't help cause they had nowhere to park.
WHO DOES THAT? They could text updates on their arrival, but when they didn't see immediate parking, said nothing.
Keep in mind, this was the last day of the month. I was moving from Philadelphia to Boston that day. So I now had to engineer a move to Boston the same day (now at about 1:30pm). Needless to say, no moving company could help.
I looked at a previous Uhaul quote I'd gotten when I was considering moving myself -- the truck rental would have been $450. Uhaul, Ryder, and Budget all had no trucks within 150mi. Of Philadelphia on the day of the move. Penske did -- so I drove 45 minutes to pick it up, paying $1200 for the rental.
Of course, I was moving from a 3rd floor walk up apartment, which was too much to move myself with the time crunch. I was forced to hire people off TaskRabbit since no actual movers could accommodate the same day scheduling. Like the truck, I paid a significant premium for same day help. The two gents, who were far from professional movers, with me, were able to get my stuff in the truck in 3 hours. All in, I paid $600 for those two helpers.
Worst of all, I went back and looked at the quotes I'd gotten for a full-service move from Philly to Boston (all in the $1,400-1,700 range). Instead, I ended up paying just over $2k, because MakeSpace is a SCAM.
Maybe a bad outing, you say? Just bad luck? I thought so, too. Don't get me wrong, under no circumstances would an experience this bad be allowable, but then I met my friend's new girlfriend -- who HAD THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE. As did her friend, who moved the same week she had from NYC to Philly.
They often DO NOT SHOW, do not call, and leave you to figure it out.
I paid just over $2,000 to move myself! Not leaving Philly until 9pm and arriving in Boston to my new apartment at 3am. Thankfully I was able to get out the same day and avoid having to deal with my old apartment and property manager to pay additional rent.
All-in-all, the worst experience ever. Whatever you do, do not risk it by using this "company".
This company will be out of business sooner rather than later but before they scam anyone else:
1) held my items for 2-3 weeks before I could get delivered.
2) they're team tore apart my Restoration Hardware bed and destroyed it ($1750). They offered $175 as compensation.
3) they will charge you a minimum of 3 months storage whether you use or not and $60 for every pick up and drop off. They purposely obfuscate this information so you're locked in.
Will be disputing with my credit card company.
Do not use them if you care about your items.
I just used their service in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. I constantly received emails and updates regarding my appointment, making me feel secure. When the movers came, they worked at a steady pace and were accommodating. I would use the service again.
Horrible company DO NOT EVER WORK WITH THEM. I have entrusted them with all my things. All boxes suffered damage. There wasn't anything spared. On top of that they lost one item in their warehouse. Can you imagine that? How can they be so incompetent. After waiting for almost a month to get the refund check they wrote the name wrong on it. I cannot cash it in. I have told them right before sending the check to correct the name on file and they didn't. They said they will but obviously didn't. DO NOT EVER EVER EVER MAKE BUSINESS WITH THEM. THEY WILL DAMAGE YOUR ITEMS. THEY WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL. RUUUN RUN RUN RUN AND NEVER LOOK BACK!
I was happy with this company at first. The movers were friendly and careful with my items. However, it is the corporate side of things I have a big issue with. Upon requesting items be returned to me they did not return all the items which were requested. It is impossible to get in touch with customer service (no one answers the phones and after 40 minutes on hold they hang up on you) and email responses are very very delayed. On top of not returning my items when initially requested they are now holding on to the remaining few items and still charging for "storage." They are holding these items hostage and requiring me to pay for ANOTHER delivery. Will not be using them again and do not recommend unless you plan to permanently store your items.
I used Make Space in February of 2020 to store my apartment furnishings. On September 12 I had all of my items returned to me. Boxes were crushed and many many of our cherished items were destroyed that could never be replaced for no $ amount. This was devastating. Dishes that were passed from generations were all smashed. It was heartbreaking. We lost our family member to CoViD and this added to the pain. Mgmt did not even call to inquire. The customer service people were the only ones who seemed to care. We live in NYC and would not ever recommend them. Please see photos below.
For 2 years I stored a 1 bedroom apartment worth of furniture with MakeSpace. It cost $234 / month, so I spent $5,600+. When I asked for my items back: (1) they could not find an arm chair I paid $1,150 for; (2) four items they delivered were heavily damaged, 3 beyond repair; (3) when they found my arm chair 3 days later, they delivered it damaged.
I would not recommend MakeSpace to my worst enemy. My experience from beginning to end has been a nightmare. After changing my appointment to accommodate them (at their request), and rearranging my entire day to move earlier, they still showed up 4 hours late. The items that did arrive were damaged beyond repair. But MANY of my items that I requested to be delivered did not arrive at all. Although unacceptable, I do realize these things are inevitable sometimes. However, the complete lack of communication and assistance of any sort to help resolve the issue is totally within their arena of support. Wait times to speak to a representative at minimum were 30 minutes (if you can even get through), the representatives give you empty promises of follow up appointments and next steps and then not only do not deliver on those promises, but seem to fall of the face of the earth. The representative I spoke to, Kevin, both promised to make contact with me regarding my order. Neither did. As of right now, I am still living in a totally empty apartment on a mattress on the floor because of MakeSpaces utter incompetency.
I gave MakeSpace brand news boxes in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. This is what I received three weeks ago. On top of my "forgotten " bookshelf that supposed to be included with this delivery ( pictured below). They rescheduled another appointment only to call the morning of and say the warehouse forgot to include my bookshelf in the delivery. It was the one item I requested to be delivered and they forgot it. I just got email saying they are looking for the bookshelf but that I need to go ahead and make a claim... because it might be lost. A bookshelf. A whole bookshelf is lost. Do not use this company. Save yourself the headache.
Really don't recommend using it. When you want to retrieve your stuff, they don't have too much delivery time slot for you to select. You have to wait for two to three weeks or even longer.
Meaning not only you can't get your stuff quickly, but you also have to pay the additional monthly fees.
Which is ridiculous.
I've asked them to send me a single photo of how my stuff stack and stored, but they rejected it.
I tried to reach out to them to learn how can I retrieve my stuff by myself, but no one answers the phone calls.
No information online.
No storage address.
It's easy and convenient for you to store.
But it is extremely painful when you want to retrieve things.
Using MakeSpace service is like you store your stuff in a black hole.
I had an extremely bad experience with Makespace. Among the 25 items I stored, they lost my biggest item ( a 9-drawer chest) with many cloths inside. The customer support was extremely bad. Firstly, the customer support promised to reply within a week after I made a call. But there was no update from the company after 10 days. Even after I kept asking for follow up, the only follow up they gave me was they were still investigating.
They suggested I file a claim after a couple of weeks of investigating. The value of my item was more than 3000 USD (320 for the chest. And many clothes, shoes, bags are in the chest) However, the maximum that I could claim was USD 1000 which was much lower than the exact value of my items (and I wasn't using the basic protection plan, I was using the silver protection plan). This was an extremely bad experience and I strongly suggest people DON'T USE the service.
I did not see the reviews for MakeSpace before selecting them, I saw good storage pricing with free pick up and delivery. I booked with them and the nightmare began -
1) UNREPAIRABLE DAMAGE AND LOST ITEMS: They self-admittedly lost large items, most of which they took apart and boxed themselves (without permission) this was about 2k of lost items. In addition to about 7K damaged items - shattered and damaged beyond repair. A classic hutch - broken, book shelf - broken, new $200-$300 lamps either shattered or irreplaceable pieces lost that make them unusable, paintings and sentimental items destroyed etc. In all honesty, it appears like they just ran over my belongings repeatedly.
2) PICK UP & DELIVERY: They missed their pick up appointment after saying they were late, but on their way, costing me an extra day in my apartment and making me wait for hours for them. Then when it came to final delivery, I booked and agreed to pay their state fee (similar distance to orignal pickup in MA from their location), they canceled before saying that they no longer deliver there and couldn't offer delivery at all. So I then had to book a truck and movers last minute and work around their pickup time, which was the whole reason I booked storage with them - the pick up and delivery they completely dropped the ball on. Also, they give you a show up window of about 3-4 hours for pickup. I was 2 hours into that because I only had 30 minutes worth of stuff to pick up and had to get the truck (also a scheduled time last minute) and they threatened to cancel my pickup slot while we were en route.
This is in addition to a partial delivery in between the move that was canceled repeatedly last minute, and when they finally showed up they brought the wrong items - and that's when they admitted they just straight up lost items. It took weeks.
3) SCAM PRICING: I had a one bedroom from the city, with no kitchen furniture or living room furniture (sold prior to move) - they quoted me 1 bedroom pricing and said I'd be under and have plenty of room, then charged me for a 3 bedroom with full furniture for months with no notice at all and claimed they couldn't show me pictures or measurements, but that my stuff somehow was taking up that much room? So charged me max price, impossible for me to hit, with no notice and no proof.
4) THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE: You cannot get through, you wait on hold for hours - extensive hours, when you do speak to someone they say they are resolving it, then there's no record of speaking with them and you never hear from them again. It was hours and hours and hours of run around/rudeness. They know they are running corrupt practices and they simply don't care. Please don't think you will be different. (I will say there are diamonds in the rough, but unfortunately they seem to be overpowered by those that simply don't care)
When they uploaded pictures of my belongings to manage, almost all of it was covered by sheets and unidentifiable, yet you couldn't request delivery without the item number.
These are just a select highlight of the issues I had with this company. I do not like writing bad reviews and gave multiple chances for them to make it right. They have two jobs - storage, pickup/delivery and they aren't even close to doing the minimum of either.
If you care about your belongings - choose any other storage company.
Also, these pictures are only a snapshot, there are so many pictures of broken items that it did not make sense to take the time to upload them all.
Note: I will say that the people who were there when I picked up my items were kind, hardworking and helpful - it's quite unfortunate they are at a company that I have to review honestly in this way because they do not deserve that.
Worst storage company possible. Get away from them. You expect a storage company would secure your belongings while in their custody. We had 11 items broken. Stay away from these guys if you want your stuff preserved!
Makespace said that under the terms of service they are not liable for damages in fragile items. This is a very odd argument for a company that is paid to store household items. Worst of all, the crew that came to my house to pick up stuff saw all the labels saying fragile and the contents (including their manager, Carlos) and no one advised or expressed concerns on the risks. Clearly, in the way my goods were broken they were not careful in transit or in storing. So, if you have bricks to store, go ahead with them. But if you have something that you care about, stay away.
To anyone who plans on using this storage company, read this first: I made my appointment on July 2nd for 8am-11am appt window. Leading up to the appointment make space sends me countless emails and texts telling me to prepare and I better be ready to avoid fees and lateness etc.
I prepare. Mind you my items are about a mid-sized package for them, they handle much larger storage appointments than mine. 4 days before my appointment they text me to confirm. I say yes, they call me later asking if I can move my appt to August 6th, I say absolutely not, they say okay no worries at all we will be there on July 30th between 8am-11am. Morning of the makespace appointment comes and I get no answer and sent to voicemail over and over when I attempt to call their number they provided.
Makespace operations agent calls me 30 minutes before my appointment window ends (10:26 to be exact) that they will not be coming and they can't come until August 9th. I tell them I will pursue legal action for damages. They say JK they have an appointment now for August 2nd that's magically appeared. I accept, I tell them I still want to get in touch with the legal team.
Someone from the claims department (not the legal team) calls me asking if it's possible for me to store my items somewhere in the meantime because I tell them someone else is moving in where do I put my stuff. Claims agent tells me they will try to compensate me for my troubles, but there will be no promises.
