Second time renting a never again.
I don't even know from where to start.
We had an issue on the road as we put the wrong fuel by mistake we asked for assistance where basically the customer service didn't do ANYTHING. We were in the middle of the mountains was -5 degrees in Austria, the only reply was that the premium plan Didn't cover and that we need to solve it by ourselves, I understand that was our mistake but we didn't get ANY HELP not even a number of a place to call or go nothing it seems that indie campers doesn't have road Assitance either! Is unbelievable. They literally told us to call the police or the firefighters… also the phone that they have for customer service no one answers. However we solved the issue but in the meanwhile we noticed that we didn't have the wheels of winter! How is that even possible? We advise that we would do a road trip in different countries where it could be a lot of different weather conditions also by law you need to have the winter wheels. We could have a fine or very bad accident because of this.

The first time we got a van with indie campers also we had an issue on the road also asked for help and didn't get an answer from the customer service honestly, we thought that we weren't just lucky but how we are seen it right now is a very unresponsive company that no one should it risk it renting a van a with them

We haven't get the deposit back, also we will take legal action for all this situation.

Unbelievable.

I cannot emphasize enough how my recent encounter with Indie Campers left me utterly disillusioned and convinced that this company operates as nothing short of a scam. The litany of issues we encountered during our rental experience casts a dark shadow over their purported services.

From the get-go, we paid for amenities such as warm water and WiFi, only to find ourselves in a situation where these promised conveniences failed to function right from the moment we drove off their parking lots. The disappointment began to mount as our attempts to address these issues fell on deaf ears, leaving us to navigate our journey without the amenities we had diligently paid for.

However, the most egregious transgression occurred when we discovered a minor scratch on the top of the van. A scratch that any reputable car paint workshop would effortlessly polish and paint for a mere 150€ turned into a pretext for Indie Campers to deduct a staggering 2,000€ from our deposit. The sheer lack of logic or justification for such an exorbitant charge defies reason.

Despite our earnest attempts to engage in a reasonable dialogue with Indie Campers regarding this absurd deduction, our pleas fell on deaf ears. The company displayed an alarming lack of customer service and refused to entertain any discussion regarding the return of the unjustly withheld funds.

In light of these disconcerting experiences, I strongly caution anyone considering Indie Campers for their travel needs to exercise extreme caution. The broken promises, malfunctioning amenities, and arbitrary deductions from deposits paint a picture of a company that not only fails to deliver on its commitments but actively engages in questionable and unfair business practices. Save yourself the frustration and financial setbacks – steer clear of Indie Campers.

I recently rented a campervan from IndieCampers with the explicit assurance of having functional heating for a silent retreat. Unfortunately, not only did the heating not work due to a low gas bottle level, but the company also failed to provide a viable solution, leaving us in 0-degree weather without heating.

Despite multiple communications and seeking a fair resolution, the company's response was deeply unsatisfactory. They offered minimal compensation that did not come close to covering the discomfort, additional expenses, and stress we incurred. When we insisted on a fairer refund reflective of the actual hardships endured, IndieCampers hid behind their policies and offered a mere 5% voucher for future travel — an option that is of no use to us given our experience.

The entire ordeal was not just about the lack of heating; it was about the company's inability to take proper responsibility for a significant service failure and their disregard for the impact this had on our trip. A company's true measure is shown in how they handle issues and care for their customers. Based on our experience, IndieCampers has shown a lack of genuine customer care and accountability.

I am making this matter public to inform potential customers of the risks and to urge IndieCampers to reconsider their approach to customer service and compensation. No customer should have to go through what we did, nor should they have to fight this hard to have their valid complaints acknowledged and adequately addressed.

I hope this review helps others make informed decisions and encourages IndieCampers to improve their services and customer care practices.

Scam - warning
December 16, 2023

Warning! Don't even think about renting with Indie Campers. It's a scam.
- They did not show up for our late pick up (that we paid 79 euros for), and we had to check in to an hotel.
- The day after the pick up took around 2,5h, the van wasn't ready.
- They said they would cover the expences we had for the hotel, but we still haven't heard back about it.
- They make you belive that «premium» insurance will cover you and that you will be liable for maximum of 199 euros. After 1 day with the van we were in an accident that wasn't our fault. They wanted us to pay 2800 euros without a report or explanation. The people who was working there didn't know what the different things in the contract meant.
- In the premium insurance you are suppose to get a new van, they refused to give us a new van unless we paid straight away without the paperwork.
- we ended up on the street without a van and they took 3200 euros from our card. (No explanation why the numbers were increased from 2800), no deposit return (500 euros).

Very Good Experience
December 17, 2023

My experience with the company was smooth. The vehicle had more than 50,000 km on it, but everything worked properly.
The staff were polite, despite the heavy workload.

The Campervan was a big wreck. We received the camper with a leaking tire. We got stranded and had to replace the tire ourselves. No engine oil at all in the engine, no window cleaning fluid and no diesel. Full with dents and skretches.

On the inside it was dirty, most of it damaged. For example torn open driver seats,a broken shower, a broken stove, a broken table, broken shutters etc. etc.

Worst of it all: the entire campervan smelled like sewer for the entire trip. The cassette of the toilet was incredibly dirty. Just horrible. The feces of the previous owner were still in it.

Don't rely on the customer service. They simply don't reply. I am still trying to get the promised refund and reimbursement of the Add Blue (wich we also had the fill up ourselves)

NEVER EVER RENT A CAMPERVAN AT INDIE CAMPERS. IT IS DANGEROUS AND YOU DON'T GET YOUR MONEY BACK.

An horrible experience. The staff are very nice, but the company is awful. Any scratch on the car costs 500 euros, even with insurance. Once you've rented it, they do everything possible and impossible to get your money. You can be sure that unplanned expenses will be debited from your deposit and, when you go to complain, you'll be met by a cynical and perverse customer care team

Hands down the worst company I have ever dealt with. STAY AWAY FROM THEM. They will look for any reason to take money from you, possibly thousands of Euros.
Whilst on rental in Holland, an elderly man clipped the rear of our rented camper. Minimal damage – broken light lens and scratched bumper & panel. The third party and I filled in the correct paperwork, he acknowledged responsibility and we carried on with our trip. Upon returning the van the depot manager said no problem, returned our deposit and off we went. He also said he had a room full of the parts needed for repair and it was not big deal.
A couple of days later my wife got an email from our bank. Indie campers had tried to take 2 charges from her credit card, one for €977.42 and another for €1954.84 – nearly 3000 Euros in total. She declined the transactions. Indie Campers then took, via PayPal, €2260 – the full amount of our deposit. An email from Indie campers was received stating that as the van was damaged, they would hold the deposit, despite already returning it. The also sent a damage report with costs, 3 items were listed. Cracked light lens at €715 (a €50 part), scuffed bumper corner at €849 (a €30 part), dent on panel - €696. A sum total of €2260, the exact value of our deposit – what a coincidence!
We contacted them, explaining that the third party had accepted liability and asked when we should expect our deposit. The reply stated that once the third-party insurer was contacted and liability accepted, they would return the deposit.
We contacted them a few more times over the next weeks asking for updates, and in each case received the same response from an advisor who I am convinced is a Bot. It stated that they are very sorry, appreciate our patience, looking into it, doing their best etc…
Eventually I contacted the third party himself who was able to tell me that Indie Campers had been in touch with his insurers some time ago, that liability was accepted by them, and that the claim was for €750, not the €2260 quoted by Indie Campers in their earlier damage report – a difference of around €1500!
After hearing this we contacted Indie Campers again, telling them what we had learned. The so-called advisor could not explain the difference between the money they took from us, and the value of the claim they are pursuing and once again said sorry, that they would look into it and all the usual platitudes they offered in previous correspondence.
I am now unsure if we will ever see our money again. The only possible explanation I can find is that Indie Campers aim to profit from customer misfortune such as this. If you don't believe me, study carefully the negative reviews here (over 1 in 10 customers leave 1 star) and all other the Internet (I wish I had), ignore the positive reviews – what happed to us could happen to anyone, and consider joining the Facebook group called 'Indie Campers have ripped us off' and you will see that we am not alone.
On a side note, the van they provided was much smaller than the one we booked and the toilet leaked so there was a constant smell of urine throughout the trip. They couldn't even get that right.
STAY AWAY!

Don't make a mistake! We lost 2500$ with this company.
If i could put 0 stars, I would.
My husband and I were very excited about our trip to Iceland, we planned out the itinerary, found a hotel for the first night and rented a camper van from Indie. We figured the trip is going to be for 2 weeks,so we need something comfortable. We paid everything ahead. The van for 2 weeks turned out to be 2500$. We paid everything ahead, almost a month before our trip. Our plane was arriving to Keflavik at 5am, so we chose early pick up, at 7.30am, for the van (+175$). We showed up at 8am and were told the van is not going to be ready for another 1-2 hours, because they are changing the tires. Alright, we were so tired, that we didn't care and just took a nap in the office. When the van was ready, the fun part (not really) started. They took our information for registration and we had to give them a credit card for a 2000€ deposit. We gave them 6! Credit cards and all of them were declined by their system. All of the cards were working, we never had any issues with them before or after this incident for any amount of money we were spending. At first we thought the cards were declined because the guys at the office were typing the information on the ipad and i know for fact that my cards work with the terminal anywhere in the world. But nope, We never had any problems paying for things whether we were paying online or through the card reader after this. We stayed in office for 5 hours, trying to figure out what to do. Our cards worked, but we were being told over and over again "your cards are the problem ". After 5 hours of stress we gave up, crossed the parking lot and rented a van from a different company. For 2200$, and never had a problem paying for it right there. When i contacted the indie campers, i was told that since i agreed to cancelation policy they were not going to refund our money back and we should have went to that office the next day and try something else (so basically ruin another day of our vacation) to figure it out. But since we were not going to do it, they considere it as a "cancelation " and we're getting no refund.
Don't make the same mistake. Go to Go Campers, they have nice, friendly staff, they have a free pick up and drop off at the airport and you'll not lose any of your money.
The weather in Iceland VERY unpredictable and you need a reliable vehicle to feel somewhat safe and you'll not get one of those with these guys.

Renter BEWARE!
November 2, 2023

This company is a foreign-based company with no local support whatsoever! We Recently rented from Indie Campers Las Vegas and were extremely disappointed. Our rental was a newer Winnebago Solis 59p camper van which at first glance appeared great however after getting our trip underway thats when things changed for the worse. First, the table post for our removable table was missing so we had no place to enjoy our meals. Second, the rear exhaust fan did not work! Third, the bathroom toilet did not flush and the lights did not work. Fourth the lights for the pop-up tent on the roof also did not work.
After multiple WhatsApp texts and multiple hours of conversations with someone overseas, there was no solution other than for us to take it to a local RV dealership and have them diagnose it which we were responsible for paying. Utterly ridiculous. Lesson learned.
Bottom line, if you do decide to rent from them you better do your due diligence and make sure that everything works before leaving the pickup location or you will be on your own. I feel bad for the people who work for Indie Campers here in the USA because the actual company could care less for their customers.
Hope this sheds some light on what you may experience renting from them. Next time I will make sure to rent from a local USA-based company. Do yourself a favor and avoid them at all costs.

This summer we had a trip in Italy with a van from Indie Campers. We needed to swap vans during our trip due to very bad condition and very smelly. Customer support is non existing everything goes through What's App.
In the middle of our trip we were surprised by the wetter and had some bad luck with our awning. Again, no customer support, my husband got even hurt while trying to close it, although we took the premium insurance, this would lower our own liability.
At check out we got told we would need to pay €199 for the damage and someone would contact us. No one ever contacted us and one week later we noticed they charged in total over €2700 from our credit card in several smaller amounts.
Almost 2 months later and we are still in a fight to get our money back. But again everything through email...

You read the same thing on all portals. As soon as there is a problem with the vehicle, arbitrary costs are foisted upon you. Customer service is non-existent. Road Assistance does not work on Saturdays. Zero transparency when it comes to invoicing costs for defects that were already known to the employees by previous customers. And this despite the fact that the vehicles are repaired free of charge for the rental company via warranty and insurance.
We rented the Grand California in Naples, which only took us 300 metres before it became unroadworthy. We had to stay by the camper for 2 days in a car park in a commercial area off the highway in case a tow truck showed up. No electricity or water after 10 hours, even though I was assured beforehand that you can camp for a good 3 days without electricity. No replacement vehicle from Indie Campers. 2 days of holiday lost. And then had an inexplicable charge debited from my account for the damage I already knew about.
Bed linen partially missing, dirty dishes, all luggage compartment handles defective, fridge defective, not adjustable - food constantly under water, retractable stairs defective according to staff from the factory, illuminated engine control light should be ignored according to staff.
Worst of all is the customer service, to whom I complained after returning. Untrained staff with don't care attitude. Nothing is refunded at Indie Campers - after all, you signed the terms and conditions. Not a trace of customer friendliness or goodwill for a ruined and already overpriced holiday.
I wish I had done better research before the trip and decided against Indie Campers.

Poor vehicle condition and insurance scammers
October 22, 2023

We hired a camper from Indie Campers. On arrival we took photos of all the damage. 25 photos in total. Blinds didn't work, windows didn't hold open, gas bottle empty, seat torn, no plug for sink, no clips for privacy screen. At pick up the employee spent an hour doing repairs before we were prepared to leave in it. I complained and they refunded the preparation cost they charge of €63. Along the way we put a dint in the side of the van. We didn't worry because we took out premium insurance and asked before we left what wasn't covered and was told the top of the van and underneath. We were happy to pay the excess. When we returned the van and showed them the damage they came out with a bill if €1430 for the damage. We reminded them we had insurance and we're told it didn't cover that part of the car. We protested and called the number on the contract and were told we had to send an email and lodge a complaint. Shortly after I checked my credit card and they had taken two amounts, the excess and the ridiculous amount for the damage. Their invoice did not give any details and was generated by whatever the employee put in. We are fighting them in two levels. One for the double withdrawals and two for saying the damage was underneath (contract states below the line of the bottom of the door) when in fact it was on the side.
Happy to pay excess but they have skimmed a total of €2383 for what you see below. That's double in Aus dollars. First photo was our damage. The rest were some of the existing damages at pick up. My partner has more. Just looking for a fair deal.

Disgraceful company
October 19, 2023

At first our experience with Indie campers was pleasant, the staff member at check in was laid back an very nice.

However upon returning the van this experience took a turn for the worse 3 days after returning our camper I was alarmed that a €304 amount had been withdrawn from my account, without my knowledge, and then received a damage report from Indie Campers for a 5cm scratch and a request to pay another €304 as this was the amount that had actually attempted to withdraw from my account.

Upon returning the vehicle the staff member at Indie campers did a thorough walk around of the van with us, took photos and noted any damage.

We had had an accident in a parking lot and this was noted, they returned our security deposit as we had the premium package insurance and charged us the €199 fee for the damage. I contacted them to question why we had been charged and why this hadn't been communicated with me prior to the money being taken from my account, Indie campers response was that they under their contract can conduct assessments up to 30 days after the vehicles have been dropped off and the security deposits returned and can then take money from your account accordingly if they find any more damage.

They then utilise a
"price list" which is not public information, to determine the relative cost of any damage on a vehicle and then deduct that from the customers card. In our case, a scratch >15cm was actually €604 worth of damage, not only is the €604 claimed amount an extortionate cost to repair said damage, under their Ts&Cs they do not actually have to repair the vehicle.

After questioning this they have claimed that the price includes time out of the fleet for the van to be repaired (is this not included in all the insurance costs we have already paid and said repairs to be done on this) and on top of this the staff member upon returning told us that Indie campers very rarely if ever repair any scratches or damage etc and by the looks of the fleet that we saw, I don't believe that they do fix any of the damage and use this clause in their contract as a money grab and a way to mislead and steal from their customers.

We have also had friends with very similar issues with this company. After a long and strenuous email conversation with their team they have also lied, not completely read my emails and ignored many of the questions I have asked them.
All in all after spending around €3,000 for a 20 day trip and then being charge another third of the trip afterwards I would not recommend Indie to anyone!

Go for any company apart from Indie, in the end it is going to cost you more money and stress, has left a very bitter taste in my mouth to what was a great trip otherwise.

Never again
October 4, 2023

We rented a Nomad Van from the Madrid base for two weeks. Overall the rental experience was terrible.

We bought the premium insurance for ~25€ / day. They say that it covers damages and reduces your deductible to 199€.

The person at the check-in in Madrid confirmed that all damages to the sides are insured by the premium coverage.

After we returned the vehicle, the person doing the check-out said that everything is fine and we will get our deposit back, soon.

Two days later, I get an email saying that we have to pay 787€ for damages to the side of the car. Initially, I didn't understand how this is even possible because we had the premium coverage.

However, I talked to customer support and they told me that damages on the sides_above the height of the windshield_ are not covered by the insurance at all.

What? This is just a scam. You pay for a decreased deductible and then you still have to pay the full extent of the damages if they are above windshield level?!

What also strikes me as odd: the damages are two light scratches in the car's paint, how can that cost 787€ to repair? I contacted the company for a cost breakdown, but didn't get an answer yet.

I won't even get into the quality of the rental van itself (it was not exactly in good shape), but that's a story for another day.

I would advise you to avoid this company like the plague.

I usually rent from other companies but went with Indie because of the price. The Four Winds camper was new and in nearly perfect condition and the staff in Seattle were knowleable and very helpful. I don't like that you can't make changes via the phone but luckily, everything went smoothly during my 17 day trip.

Don't rent with indiecampers! Please save yourself a lot of misery, money and stress. They transfered money from my credit card 6 times and when you contact them they are not responding. Me and my legal team are still trying to get the money back. Also the gass tank was leaking. That's f+cking dangerous.
The vans are old and dirty. The customer service is horrific. I waited 3 hours at check-in. It is very expensive. DON"T DO IT!

Awful company
September 12, 2023

Awful company. First the van they rented us the roof was broken, staff members said this was fine and nothing they could do and to just get on with it. We said this was not good enough and they found another van. The van they gave us the water was not working correctly so no water throughout the trip. On the trip a car drove into us when parked and scraped the car. We contacted the on trip services team, who were not helpful. Took hours to get a response and the telephone number given just said to email. Once returning the van to the depot the van was checked and the damage looked at. This was agreed we would pay the €199 excess as per the premium policy. This was communicated verbally and by email. Two days late I billed €1600 for an additional damage. Even though this was photographed on the drop off date. I have been told this is below the door line even though when reporting the damage I was told via what's app this was not and was sent a diagram of the door line on a template van. I have contacted indie campers since and they are saying this is in the terms and conditions. No where on there website does it state where on the van the door lines are. The van was checked at checkout so staff must not be competent to check vans if damage was missed.
Do not use this company or the Venice depot. Staff have no idea what they are doing and are not checking in and out vans properly, no check lots are used they just take pictures on smartphones and lie to you. Still disputing over email. But a bad end to our holiday.

I hired a motorhome with Indie, traveled from my country with a whole itinerary, but upon arrival in the US, I was surprised with the extension of the motorhome delivery, and they also did not deliver on the scheduled date. As a result, we were stuck in Chicago for three days with two children, getting wet in the rain while waiting for the agreed-upon day and they did not respond. They even said they would refund the hotel, but today, after 2 months, they always have an excuse and no sign of our money. Be careful, as two vacations can be as frustrating as ours was.
