DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID — I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE IT — CHOOSE ANOTHER COMPANY.
I had an absolutely terrible experience with Indie Campers. Just a few days before our trip, they unilaterally downgraded our reservation to a smaller vehicle, leaving us with no choice or alternative whatsoever.
When we arrived to pick up the vehicle, the situation was even worse: the camper was filthy, completely unsanitary, and reeked of a strong urine smell. It was frankly unacceptable.
The pickup location itself was extremely poorly organized, with no proper facilities or customer support structure. We were left standing outside in freezing 1°C weather for three hours, desperately trying to find any kind of solution, with zero assistance or empathy from the staff.
In the end, we had no option but to cancel the reservation and completely reorganize our trip at the last minute. As a direct consequence of this chaos and exposure, my son became ill, nearly ruining our entire vacation.
This company demonstrated total disregard for customers, hygiene, and basic professionalism.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND INDIE CAMPERS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
An appalling experience that completely ruined what should have been a special family trip.
We paid over £3,000 in good faith for a motorhome that was meant to be safe, clean, and fit for purpose. My wife, our child, and I were genuinely excited to use it not only for a family adventure, but also to explore Spain as part of researching a potential future residence. Instead, the experience quickly turned into frustration, disappointment, and ultimately anger.
From day one, the motorhome had pre-existing damage, multiple warning lights permanently illuminated (including oil and DPF/exhaust), sanitation systems that hadn't been emptied, a faulty toilet, unsecured cabinetry, broken and torn blinds, missing insect screens, a dirty baby seat, incomplete gas supply, and cooking equipment so poor we had to buy our own. It was unhygienic, poorly maintained, and clearly not properly inspected before handover.
Although the Valencia office itself was not responsible for support, the company's central support team was disorganised and ineffective. We were promised call-backs that never came, had to chase basic answers, and were then told there had been "no update from us" despite repeated contact.
The situation became so bad that we cut our trip short by seven days, paid out of pocket for hotels in Oliva and Valencia, and returned the vehicle early simply to end what had become a nightmare — an experience that could easily have been avoided with basic standards and checks.
This matter is now with their "global support team" for investigation and proposed resolution. Whether this review is amended will depend entirely on how they respond and whether they take responsibility through fair compensation.
Based on our experience, I would strongly advise others to think very carefully before booking.
I booked a camper for my honeymoon with Indie Campers and it turned into a nightmare. After being told I could change my booking from Switzerland to Portugal with a 70% refund, the van they gave us in Portugal was disgusting and completely broken — no water, no gas, a rotten fridge, and used underwear inside. We couldn't use it, slept in hotels, and spent over 70 hours chatting with customer service, who promised refunds that never arrived until today (2 months after)
Instead, they falsely charged me for a pre-existing windshield crack and even withdrew a "ghost payment" of €568 that doesn't exist in their system. In total, Indie Campers took €6,570 from me, unfairly keeping around €4,260 — for a camper that was completely broken and only used for two nights.
I later discovered dozens of forums and reviews describing the same scam pattern from other customers across Europe. My bank confirmed the charges and I'm now in a formal legal process against Indie Campers for fraud and unfair commercial practices.
This company operates with zero transparency and should be investigated immediately.
I do not recommend Indie Campers. They failed to provide the RV I reserved three times, forcing me to travel from Phoenix to San Fransisco, to Las Vegas and losing four days (40%) of my rental. The replacement RV was lower-value and barely functional: no working water system, battery failure that disabled lights, ventilation, and fridge, fridge that never worked, and a black water outlet left open. For all these issues they offered a refund of $1,290.82 of the original $3,758.05 Support via WhatsApp was inconsistent — sometimes they never responded, leaving me stranded and frustrated. On top of that, they charged me $3,375 for minor damage despite a Protection Plan that was supposed to cap my liability at $587.77. Overall, the experience was stressful, expensive, and unacceptable.
Do not use Indie Campers. We have a voucher for 300 EUR and they're unable or unwilling to apply it, so they're basically stealing from us. Their customer support is an absolute nightmare. We've exchanged 40 emails about this without a fix, and they are now no longer replying. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bankruptcy in the near future.
Do not use Indie Campers. Absolutely horrendous customer support. We had a lot of issues with our reservation last year. After many messages they offered us a voucher, which we took to be done with it. However, when we tried to use the voucher this year, we couldn't, and after 40 emails they still weren't able or willing to help us with it at all. So we have a useless voucher, they're still keeping our money, and nobody is replying anymore. In short what happened last year:
- We booked for our honeymoon.
- Our booking turned out to have incorrect dates, and when we found that out last-minute, the only option we got was to cancel it and rebook. We were told there would be no costs involved.
- However, they proceeded to charge us the full amount of more than 1500 EUR!
- Even worse, they even charged us VAT, and for the full set of extras (bikes/barbecue/travelkit/gas cylinder) that can simply be given to the next customer. Which is even more strange when you consider that according to their own policy you can cancel extras at any time and use it for other costs (like extras or kilometers). Our advice to anyone thinking about booking with Indie Camper is to only do it if you don't care about potentially losing your money. Our advice to Indie Campers is to a) revisit their policies to at least refund VAT and extra on cancellations; b) be more empathic and not hide behind policies when cases like this sometimes happen, there are people behind booking numbers; c) get customer support under control, it's a horrible experience for customers, and I can't imagine the 70+ messages we've had to send didn't cost Indie Campers a lot of money as well.
We booked two camper vans with IndieCampers (spending over $7,700 in total. I added proof of purchase for one of the two vans) Sadly, what we received was far below basic expectations. Both vans were dirty, poorly maintained, and missing essential equipment. Camper 1 problems: Stove didn't work, toilet flush broken, cruise control not working, blanket missing, electronics cable misplaced, torn mosquito screen, no cups provided, and the van was filthy with sand and dust, pop-up roof suspension jammed (had to fix with tools) Camper 2 problems: Vehicle dirty and sandy, electronics cable misplaced, torn mosquito net, cut water hose, water not refilled, damaged front tire, stone chip in windshield, rear mosquito net broken, and insurance coverage misleading and unclear. We also had to spend $189.96 of our own money to buy basic essentials like a hose, cables, cups, and a blanket – none of which were refunded as of now. We feel completely misled by the advertised promises of IndieCampers. The vehicles were unsafe, unprepared, and not in rental condition. For the money we paid, this was unacceptable. We cannot recommend IndieCampers to anyone. This experience ruined our trip, has cost us many extra hours and left us feeling cheated. We are planning to file a report with the Bureau of Consumer Protection and sharing our experience so others don't go through the same.
This is the worse company I have ever had dealings with. We rented a van for 3 weeks in Canada. The problems are too many to list individually, but a summary would be: lack of equipment in van (not enough cutlery, no frying pan, no toilet tablets, no front window cover so everybody could see into the van at night), the van had not been cleaned (old dried chewing gum stuck to a wall next to the bed, somebody else's food still in the cupboards), the van was damaged and had duct tape holding inner walls together.
On the first day of hire, the hot water stopped working. On road support was useless. We ended up paying for the necessary repairs to the van ourselves because indie campers didn't answer the phone when the garage phoned them to authorise the repairs. After an hour they gave up and we just paid them. Despite repeated emails and messages, a month later I have still not had a response from indie campers and there is no sign of a refund for the repairs to the van that I paid for (that the garage confirmed were not our fault)
I have never written a negative review before. This has been a genuinely awful experience and I cannot emphasise enough - DO NOT book with Indie Canpers. There were plenty of other hire companies in Canada including Canada Dream and Canada Adventures. The ad hoc conversations we had with people who had rented with them all gave positive feedback. I'd book with one of these instead.
My family and I rented an RV from Indie Campers Calgary for a week in early July 2025. On the first night driving over a narrow bridge we clipped the side of the camper with the bridge, we assessed the damage and continued to our campsite which was a few minutes up the road. We were in Golden, BC and straight away took photos of the damage and called Indie Campers to be told to message them instead as the phone line wasn't for incidents. The side door was damaged and letting in mosquitos which added to our already frazzled state. I started the chat with their WhatsApp number at 23:48. Indie Campers took 50 minutes to advise us what information they needed. The next morning we filled in the damage report and had all files to them by 11am. No reply as to what we should do, despite asking multiple times. Decided to drive back to Calgary at 1.30pm. Returned to Calgary looking for replacement vehicle, as our premium insurance entitled us to, but none were available. Had to make alternative travel arrangements to continue our road trip. Premium Insurance is A SCAM. Our liability is over 10,000 for the damages. Do yourself a favour and run a mile from this company. Anti consumer policies. They can charge whatever amount they want for any damage caused. No cover at all when something went wrong. Incredibly unhelpful Live Message staff who left us stranded without any idea of what to do for 18 hours. If we hadn't decided ourselves to return to Calgary and waited for advice we would have another night in a mosquito filled RV.
I am astonished that a company like this can still be allowed to be in business! Trust the reviews, can only recommend to not ever rent a van here!
The fact that there's no actual phone number to call them, only a WhatsApp number, already says it all. That's unacceptable for a company that rents out cars. We picked up our van in the south of Portugal, excited to start our roadtrip up north. On the way, lights started showing and the dashboard flickered a few times. But we thought all was okay. Until the next day, when the car didn't start anymore at all. Through WhatsApp, Indie Campers advised us to ask someone nearby to help us jumpstart the car with cables. We did this but it didn't help, the problem was way more serious than that. They then suggested us to tow the van to a mechanic nearby, which would be at our cost. We refused and demanded a replacement vehicle, and that's when the radio silence began. No support, no replacement car, no intention to solve the problem. We had to rent a normal car elsewhere to make it to our destination in time. More than a month later and we still have no news, no refund, no deposit back. Nada. What an absolute sh**show of a company. Absolutely avoid at all cost and save yourself some headaches and ruined holidays. If there's any initiatives to get this company out of business, I'll sign it!
My experience with this company took me across multiple Australian locations, and it quickly became clear that the issues here are systemic, not isolated. I'm still owed a substantial amount of unpaid overtime, despite numerous attempts to resolve it. Many of my colleagues are facing the same situation. Raising concerns about these issues was met with resistance. Despite Australian employment laws clearly covering these matters, the company acts as if they don't apply to them. When I stood up for my rights and those of my colleagues, I faced retaliation instead of support. It's a toxic culture where speaking up comes with consequences. The ground-level staff were dedicated and hardworking, but their efforts were constantly undermined by poor decisions from management. The working conditions were appalling — cleaning vehicles in unsafe, pest-infested areas with no uniforms, no proper safety gear, and no shade, even in the heat of summer. For a global company, this is unacceptable. One particularly troubling instance involved a break-in at one site, and yet we were still expected to go ahead with a booking just hours later, with no regard for staff safety. The fleet was in disrepair — many vehicles had faulty cruise control, unreliable batteries, and serious mechanical issues. These were knowingly rented out in unsafe conditions. Customer service, advertised as available 24/7, was practically unreachable in critical situations. Both employees and customers were left stranded without assistance. Visa violations were also a serious issue. Staff were placed in full-time roles under visas that didn't permit such employment, which has been reported to the relevant authorities. Customers were frequently charged excessive fees for minor damage, far beyond actual repair costs. This seems more like profiteering than fair business practice. This company has also been known to pressure customers to remove negative reviews, but you don't have to look far to find countless stories from former employees and customers on Reddit and Facebook, all pointing to the same issues. At one location, the entire team resigned on the same day — a clear indication of how toxic the environment had become. That's not something that happens in a healthy company. I strongly advise against working here or renting from them. If you value your rights, safety, and peace of mind, stay far away from this company.
Indie-competent, "New Zealand's South Island franchise struggles."
The Lisbon, Portugal entrepreneur Hugo Oliveira's concept in 2012 to create an international camper van rental company was cutting edge and creative. The 2023 expansion to Christchurch was another step toward expanding the company's successful global model.
Recently we traveled to Christchurch to rent a Indie Poptop Camper for a five day tour of the South Island, albeit a compressed time to visit an area so packed with places to see. We shuttled to the Christchurch office and met with Phil who checked us in and gave us a short explanation of the camper van we were to use. He mentioned there would be an oil light on but not to worry, maintenance was scheduled when we returned the van in six days. It was our first red flag.
Excited for our adventure we drove off and headed toward Mount Cook. As we pulled out noticing the oil light lit as warned, we also noticed we only had a quarter tank of gas, an added red flag. We pressed on but noticed the camper van struggled anytime we needed to climb. We didn't think much about it and arrived at our first nights stop. The next morning as we made the turn to Mt Cook and more climbing the engine light came on. We now had a the oil light, engine light and an obviously compromised vehicle moving slowly uphill. We attempted to contact Indie through the Q code as instructed but we did not have strong enough cell service to go through the steps. We decided to change our plans and divert to Queenstown where we knew they had an office. We arrived at noon and spent hours trying to get help from Indie. At one point they sent us a list of local garages to take the van to the following day. The vehicle wasn't safe to drive farther so we had to sleep in the parking ones the Queenstown Events Center and drive in the morning to their office as instructed.
We arrived at the office the following day at 9am and no one was there. We contacted Indie again and they said they'd work on it. Fortunately at 9:30am the manager Shane arrived but had no notice we were coming for help. He was helpful but it wasn't until almost noon that he was able to exchanged vans for us. We were also charged a second bond on the van and they said they couldn't refund the previous one until we completed the trip. It made no sense to us but we just wanted to get on the road so we paid it.
We were upset we had lost more than a day with van issues but decided to be positive and create an abbreviated plan. We headed for Milford Sound. The new van was exactly what we had hoped for, it climbed easily and we were reassured from this that the previous van was compromised from the time we left Christchurch.
We visited Milford Sound and found a campsite just outside of it surrounded by snow capped mountains and cold air—-we had a hail storm as we checked into the campground. Once we parked we planned our evening of heating the water, cooking our dinner from the groceries we picked up and going to bed after a frustrating couple of days. Unfortunately, Shane had forgotten to change the empty LP gas tank so we had no hot water, gas grill or hot water. It's hard to describe how disappointed we became at that moment.
That evening we ate peanut butter sandwiches, took a cold sink cleanse and tried to stay warm that night. In the morning the temperature in the van read 7 degrees. Our fourth night continued our focus on discussing the ineptitude of Indie Campervans. We only had five nights scheduled and what we expected to be an exciting trip was marred by the constant problems presented by Indie Campervans.
The next morning we drove out of the park, headed back toward Christchurch for our fifth night. We found a place to exchange our empty LP gas so we would have the amenities we expected every night. The van was due back by 11am so we had a full day of driving so we could arrive on time.
We believe the people we worked with at Indie at good intentions but low competency. We were first given a van that was obviously compromised mechanically as recognized when we were told to ignore the oil light as it was scheduled for service the following week. The second van wasn't prepared properly and we suffered for that too. In summary, Indie Campervans of South Island New Zealand lack competency and because of that our trip was significantly compromised. We are extremely disappointed
Nothing works in this car except the engine... it's not a house on wheels - it's a barn on wheels... I also want to add that we were given dirty bed linen, which is why we sleep in sleeping bags. Autonomous heating only works when the engine is on; this is a consequence of the fact that the battery has been in need of replacement for a long time; it has simply used up its resource. When the engine is turned on, the timing belt makes a lot of noise and prevents us from sleeping, our engine also interferes with the sleep of the surrounding people on the camp site, which is why I have to constantly look for a place at the maximum distance from others...
Heel slecht!
Camper gehuurd in Faro.
I think indie campers need to take more pride in the hygiene and cleanliness of their campers. The RV was filthy. My partner and I had to deep clean it, the AC vent and the other vents were covered in so much dust like it hadn't been cleaned for years (and that's no exageration) oil grease splattered all over the blinds and walls near the window, people's belongings from how ever many trips ago. Including dirty socks, hair, sweet wrappers and dirt under the mattress of the bed. The shower drain had hair from again the previous trip. The toilet hadn't been cleaned, pee stains around the seat and drips down the side and bottom of the toilet. The waste pipe hadn't even been disinfected from the previous trip, my poor partner had to deal with the stench and appearance of other people's waste before even the first attempt of doing our own. Microwave had splatters of food inside. The bed linen which we had paid for in a package had stains all over it (please don't give customers stained linen and think this is acceptable, it's gross and unhygienic even if it had been washed, just buy cheap new bedding and don't cut corners because it doesn't look great for your company). Honestly it was as though the RV has just been dropped off from the previous trip and the keys handed straight over to us. Also we had to sit outside the office and wait over 2 hours just to be seen and to collect the keys. So by the time we got the RV and had to get all the cleaning supplies and new bedding and find a camp site, it was so late at night and we were just exhausted and not really what we wanted on our first day. I work in hospitality myself and the whole set up from the customer service to the cleanliness to things not operating as properly as they should. It was just a massive let down after planning/booking our month long road trip and putting our trust into this company. We still had a great trip and I wasn't going to let that ruin it for us but it's not great service and I just want to make other people aware who are thinking of renting from this company. There are much better companies out there.
With one word: a NIGHTMARE. A total disaster: the van broke due to lack of ordinary maintenance and after that moment nobody was able to support us in any way, nobody was willing to take accountability. We were completely left alone with a broken vehicle (not because of us, but even in that case it would be wrong, especially because we paid for the extra insurance).
The negative online reviews are true: as soon as you have any kind of little issue, your are left alone and you lose holiday time.
A tip: be sure to travel with good and positive friends, who are able to cheer up the mood.
Check-in: This is not a check-in service. People who work in the pick-up centre should be able to give the right informations, help you in any possible way and they should care about the customer. Nicer people would be great.
(PS: we had to change the first van with another one, and they asked for another 500€ deposit...)
Their campers are of very poor quality and when you need help (because something will 100% break in these low-quality campers) their costumer support is terrible.
They will only provide you with google-search links on what you have to do without doing ANYTHING themselves.
Save your vacation and DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!
Indie Campers is unfairly holding up my money!
This is a story of injustice and an unacceptable customer approach.
In short - We had a flight cancellation due to a threatening attack by Iran on Israel. We had a hard time communicating with INDIE and faced some inflexible and fixed approaches to our case, although it is an extreme case that was not under our control!
After all - I had to replan and reschedule everything from scratch.
Unfortunately, there were 700 Euros differences in the price - I was refused to get any of it nor to get it back as a voucher! On top of that because of minor damage, they charged us 500 Euros instead of subtracting and although we had premium insurance (we tried to use all the money that was left on their side!)
On the last day of my trip, I found out that the amount was being documented literally as a "refund" on my Indie account but only visible to the customer service staff - I was shocked. They don't want to release our money!
They are so aggressive and abusive and will do anything to get your money.
Be aware your holidays can turn to a nightmare in few seconds.
Team is nice but the company isn't. Motorhome poor furbished and engine failure and repair at YOUR cost.
Engine: I had to pay for the maintenance of the engine in a garage as some lights starts to appeared on the dashboard. The company doesn't cover for the engine maintenance but want it same as we took it or they charge you. Imagine when it arrived day 2 of the holidays when I wasn't responsible for this. Surely the unlucky of the 5 last people however my bills went way up and even the "Customer service" refuse to pay for the repairs.
Furniture: sleep 6 but only 3 outside chairs, a small outside table 50 by 70cm, 2 plates of each, 2 spoon, a coffee maker for 1 person, the bedsheet didn't cover the full bed, the second bed didn't had the bedsheet or the duvet. No adaptador for legal camping plugs. Heater works 1 on 2 and never when plugged to electricity. Blackout or mostico net didn't work so had to maintain them down with headphone cable. Water pipe to fill the tank is 2m long! Just a joke at the moment of using it. Never see so little investment in the furniture make you holidays enjoyable.
Indie Campers is the last company I recommend to have a nice relaxing time. All the extra of the motorhome is at your financial cost, the furniture make your day to day miserable and the engine maintenance poorly done hby them will be added to your invoice at the end of the holidays with no way of see it back.
Be careful with this legal scam.
Indiecampers.com. The deal sounded great, but it was too good to be true. Pick up a campervan in Indiana, bring it to Arizona, for adollar per day. Pickup a campervan in Munich, bring it to Sardinia, for a euro per day. Yet I took the bait, the European option. I couldsee the problems from when I got the Indiecampers hub near Munich. The staff running the place were graduate interns fromHungary, who didn't know what they were doing. It was chaos. They didn't know the fi ne print nor could they share it with me orothers. Such things as the fi ne print of insurance. I didn't even know there was another option other than the basic. Such things astips for driving the vans -- the need to take wide turns, etc. There was no introduction to the vans. The only instruction was a fewvideos on internal things within the van, not how to drive it. On the second day I turned and grazed a wall, leaving damage, but Icould not get in touch with anyone in customer service to discuss it. T tried for days to reach Indiecampers, to no avail, and to inquirehow to properly use the heat. Couldn't reach them. Dropping the van off in Sardinia, they didn't even know I was coming. I got adamage report a day later, which detailed damages and indicated a liability of 0 -- which, I, of course, knew was incorrect. Havingscoured the fi ne print which was not alluded to in any way in the pickup process, there was to be a 2500 euro max for a customer topay They ended up utilizing my credit card on fi le to charge me $676.48 above that max. And, in my request for a refund, they justsaid that the damage merited that charge and that they gave me a discount from the actual damage -- not mentioning at all the maxindicated in the insurance. The company is preying on people's intense desire for exploration and adventure -- and is hoping thatpeople look the other way when they take advantage of them and ignore basic proper business and customer service practices.
