NEVER USE THIS SITE
February 20, 2016

Freetax claims its up to the IRS once the return has been accepted: but I highly disagree because if that was the case; there are TURBO TAX users who has gotten their money within 4 days and they're linked to the IRS as well. So this site is complete bull$#*!. I filed feb 4rth we are two weeks later & I haven't gotten my money back YET. I'm pissed I normally do h&r block & ive neverrrrr had an issue. But me trusting someone who uses this site frequently. I will never NEVER use freetax again. Turbo tax for me next year.

- sincerely, a pissed off woman

Hi Tiara, once the IRS accepts a tax return, from any source, they are in control of the rest of the process. That includes the timing of processing and issuing of tax refunds. The IRS process can vary from year to year and tax situations vary from person to person, both of which can have an effect on the exact timing of when a tax refund is issued. The IRS expects to issue most refunds in less than 21 days, but the exact timing can vary.

A big mistake.
February 14, 2016

I filed for my tax return on the 29 or the 30 either way I'm still I'm still waiting for it to come. Here it is the middle of February and I'm still waiting. Easy was easy to do but I definitely will be using turbo tax next year. This matter have put things on hold for me.

Hello Laquita, do you know if your tax return has been accepted by the IRS? The easiest way to find out if your tax return was accepted is to sign in to your account. Once you are signed in click the 'Check E-File Status' link. If your tax return has been accepted by the IRS they are actively processing your refund. The timing of your refund is determined by the IRS. Due to updates in their system, changes in the tax code, and other factors your refund can be delivered at different times from year to year. If you would like to know more about your accepted tax return visit the Where's My Refund tool http://www.freetaxusa.com/wheres_my_refund.jsp. If you need assistance or have any questions please don't hesitate to contact [email protected].

Where's my money
February 12, 2016

I'm pissed cause my taxes said refund sentinel the 10th but it's nothing in my account and it's the 12th. Where is my money?

Hi Ty, that’s a good question. Once your tax return is sent to the IRS they are in control of the timing of your refund. I would recommend following up with the IRS and your bank. The number for the IRS is 800-829-1040.

Over the years, I have used TaxAct until last year, 2015 filing, TaxAct charged me for filing federal tax return using its s/w. I don't mind paying but TaxAct did not forthright telling users that they have to pay until the end when they are ready to file, then they got hooked. This year TaxAct said upfront in fine print that only 1040EZ and 1040A are free.

I just finished filing my 2015 Fed. Tax Return with FreeTaxUSA and I noticed that the time for me to get it done about less than half of using TaxAct. At the end, when I am ready to file and to my surprise it's actually free not trying to hook me at the end. I file the 1040 with itemized deductions, Schedule D (capitial gains/losses), charities, Student Credit (8863).

It does require a little bit of tax knowledge to know what is the correct form to edit. But overall, it's very easy and a great tax s/w. I am the first time user and will use the FreeTaxUSA s/w again for my next year tax return. Highly recommended!

Update - 02/19/2016, I received my Fed's refund back, e-filed on the 02/10/2016... without any hiccups.

Why with this system it's taking them so long? Even my husband fill with you guys he haven't even been approved by the irs, I just think you guys have been flag by fraudulent returns so irs is making the legit customer wait also

Hi Grace, I would recommend signing in to your FreeTaxUSA account and clicking on the 'Check E-file Status' link. If there aren’t any additional instructions there and your tax return has been accepted by the IRS, the rest of the process is in their hands, including the timing. We’ve had customers reporting they’ve received their refunds, and other like yourself who say they are still waiting. It really just depends on how fast the IRS system can process your refund. The IRS says they expect to issue most refunds in less than 21 days, but tax situations vary and some returns take longer to process than others. The most up-to-date information about your tax return will be available from the IRS Where’s My Refund tool. http://www.freetaxusa.com/wheres_my_refund.jsp

What a joke!
February 8, 2016

Preparing my taxes with Freetax usa was easy, but it seems like anyone who used them for 2015 taxes, are waiting a lot longer to receive their refund from the IRS. I filed on January 19 2016, along with several of my coworkers and friends, and still have yet to get any refund, or accepted by the IRS. Rhe people that i recommended, also have not received anything yet, but anyone that used turbo tax or H&R block and even filed later than i did, have received their taxes. This is just crazy..

Hi Jennifer, Once the IRS has accepted your tax return the rest of the process is in their hands, including the timing. It really just depends on how fast the IRS system can process your refund. Tax situations vary and some returns take longer to process than others. If you want to check whether or not your tax return was accepted you will need to sign in to your FreeTaxUSA account and click on the ‘Check the status of your 2015 return’ on the ‘Home’ link at the top of the screen. It will either show a message of steps you still need to take to file your return, or it will show the IRS has accepted your tax return.

I've used FreeTaxUSA for many years and never had a problem. I now work for one of the major tax prep companies filing other people's taxes for money, but I still used FreeTaxUSA to complete my personal tax return. It works great for the vast majority of people. But if you have a complex return or an unusual situation, you might want to hire a real person to file your taxes for you.

One year I worked a temporary job in the summer and the company erroneously withheld taxes for the wrong state. Using FreeTaxUSA I wasn't able to figure out how to file a nonresident return to West Virginia to get back the money erroneously paid to them. That was an unusual situation, and the software couldn't handle it. But other than that, it's always worked just fine. I don't mind paying $12.95 for the state return because it's still a lot cheaper than any of the commercial tax prep stores.

Always a little hiccup
January 27, 2016

Been filing 11 years and never had a problem. Started using free tax usa in 2014, that's when it seems like I started having problems. 2014 got code 1121, 2015 code 570. I have filed the same for 8 years and always have gotten return within 10 days, but now since 2014 I have been getting codes and it's taking alot longer.

Hi charlie, We can understand some of your frustration. Each year the tax code is updated, the IRS updates how they process certain tax returns, and new security measures are implemented. We try to make tax filing easy using our software. We check for issues before you send your taxes to the IRS and try to help in any way we can. If you need assistance with any of the codes you've received from the IRS our customer support representatives would be glad to help you.

Last year I even won $300 in their giveaway contest. I love FreeTaxUSA and tell everyone I know about them. Easy to use, easy to access years later; never had any problem. I have no state tax, so yay for me, but I'm so glad I found this company through the IRS website. They don't hound me like TurboTax does with spam galore, and I find this site much easier to navigate as far as special circumstances. Thank you FreeTaxUSA!

I sold my business. How and where do I enter the sales amount as income?

Date of experience: January 20, 2016
Sam S. FreeTaxUSA Rep
over a year old

"Hi John, the sale of business assets are reported on the IRS Form 4797. If you are using our software, you’ll select ‘Income’ on the menu bar, ‘Business Income’ on the drop-down menu, then follow the prompts from there.

The IRS website gives some good guidance:

“The sale of a business usually is not a sale of one asset. Instead, all the assets of the business are sold. Generally, when this occurs, each asset is treated as being sold separately for determining the treatment of gain or loss. When sold, these assets must be classified as capital assets, depreciable property used in the business, real property used in the business, or property held for sale to customers, such as inventory or stock in trade.” https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Sale-of-a-Business

BEWARE!
December 22, 2015

These jokers charged me TWICE for the 12.95 and THEN a message popped up saying "The e-file system is unavailable!" There is no phone number for them so I had to call my bank to have them dispute BOTH charges.

The process is easy but a scammer can never be trusted. I'm not saying don't use them, but please check your bank account afterwards and if they charge you for something you didn't receive, dispute it!

Date of experience: December 22, 2015
Sam S. FreeTaxUSA Rep
over a year old

Hi Inze, sorry for any confusion. Whenever a payment is submitted, the charge is automatically pre-authorized by the credit card company and will show as a "pending" charge on your bank account. If for some reason the credit card company or our system declines the payment, then that charge will not be fully processed and the pending charge will go away within a few business days. It's possible to have a charge rejected and then retry and have it accepted which could look like a duplicate charge for a few days. Also if you click multiple times on the Pay Now button it may look like there are duplicate charges. Only one transaction will be fully processed, the other will go away within a few business days. If you still have an extra charge showing on your statement, please contact our customer support team and we will be happy to remove it. [email protected]

In regard to the e-file system being unavailable. E-file is the recommended method for filing your return and we utilize that method whenever possible. However, for a variety of reasons, e-file isn't always available and a return may need to be printed and mailed instead. The fee you paid is for the preparation of your state tax return, whether e-filed or printed and mailed. It sounds like that could've been communicated in a better way. We are always trying to improve and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I have used them all and this one not only is my favorite but the most intuitive software I have used. I switched a few years ago. It doesn't consist of endless pop up upgrade to $$$ every few min. It asks once if I want to upgrade to priority support. I didn't select it and continued on. It didn't keep popping up unlike the big filing companies always did. Also it doesn't cost more to fill out my Sch C or Rental income. Even with all my forms I still finish my return in under 30 min. The Customer Support people are helpful and I don't have to wait forever for an answer to my questions. I would suggest not racing through the screens as I did almost mess up once when filing because I was not reading the screen fully and missed selecting something. I would have had to amend my return had I submitted. Thankfully I caught my mistake before filing. So read each screen and you won't go wrong.
