Paw paw trees are all I got
March 28, 2022

I placed an order in February all I received was two paw paw trees that have showed no sign of life. The fig tree I got from elsewhere is already growing leaves.
I ordered asparagus, onions sets and garlic that are suppose to go in the ground no later than this week.
I was promised the rest of my order between 3/14 and 3/28. The only plant that required a delay was the strawberries.
They decided they could ship my order on 4/15. They have not updated their zone information. They gave me different dates of planting than what my area requires.
They cancelled my entire order I have prepared three beds and it is too late to order the stuff needed from another source. I will have to go to the local nursery now to buy my root stock. I live 25 miles from a nursery. I am really upset about this.
Honestly I do not see any progress with the paw paw trees either and I think they are not going to grow either.

I cannot understand how they have been in business 110 years.

I bought stuff from them years ago and it came in a more timely manner. I do not understand what happened to this company.

Don't order from Burgess!
March 18, 2022

Don't order from Burgess! Last year I wasted almost $200 for plants that did not arrive until well after the planting season for them passed. When they did arrive, they were in very poor condition, with a good bit of mold and slime. No one answers the phone, and their customer service email results in an auto reply, so it is clear no one monitors it. I sent my plants back, but never received a refund. Save yourself some heartache, and order from a reputable company.

Sham business
October 13, 2021

Ordered 2 weeping rose plants on March 6 2021 & received them on May 1... apparently DEAD. Planted them in effort to revive them and 2 months later gave up and contacted Burgess for refund. Was told to return product in original wrapping at my expense for replacement... not refundable. Original packaging had been long discarded, so I disputed charge with credit card company. Burgess acknowledged responsibility but in Oct. 2021 re-billed credit card and denied culpability. Don't deal with Burgess!

Customer service nonexistent; inferior product
September 16, 2021

Wish I had read other reviews before placing a $48 order. Burgess charged my credit card 6 weeks before I received their worthless product. Multiple attempts to email did not produce the courtesy of a reply; daily attempts to reach them failed only to get a constant busy signal as if the phone was off the hook. Finally received the order which was a joke. Bare root products were so intertwined that I couldn't even separate them to plant. Only 2 plants lived. So I disputed the charge and had my bank reverse the charge. They had the gall to send me a letter stating they would charge my card again which they did. Keep the $48. I will never buy from them again and highly recommend no one do business with this company.

Dont even consider at all!
August 28, 2021

Dont be sorry and be fooled by low prices. If you want healthy plants, great customer service, go elsewhere. Also this place is the same under another name of "Direct Gardening"(Bloomington, Il.). Currently in process of trying to get refunded after several excuses of delaying orders.

Never Order from here!
August 27, 2021

Never Order from here! I placed an order for couple hundred $$$ worth of plants. When they arrived they arrived in plastic bags all mangled. When I called they said that if they didn't survive they would honor the warranty replacement. I asked that the rest of the shipments be packaged better. They were not. I had verified the date that the paper work had to be postmarked by for warranty replacement information twice and I had emailed (with no acknowledgement). They are now not honoring the warranty replacement because they said that they did not receive it by the correct date. Everything had to be snail mailed. I would have been better off going to walmart for the trees!

Screw the customer
August 19, 2021

I ordered $162 of plants including a 5- in-1 pear tree and a 3-in1Angel Trumpet.
The pear tree had the grafts vertically on the trunk and the trunk was broken in two pieces below the majority of the grafts. I sent them an email requesting a replacement in early May including a picture showing the two pieces. I was tld to send it to them in writing and to include the packing list. I did that and received all the paperwork back 30 days later with a statement that I must plant it and care for it for six weeks to see if it will grow before I can request a replacement. After I received it, I sent it all back in the middle of June. I requested either a replacement tree or my money back. I have not heard back from them.
3-in-1 Angel plant. I had read their entire verbiage on the Angel Plant before I bought it and felt that it would fit in. The plant grew and was about 2' tall. I yanked it out of the ground this last weekend as, from other sources, I found out that all parts of this plant are highly toxic. Even touching the leaves or trunk can cause serious problems and/or death. To not forewarn customers that this plant should not be placed where kids, adults, and pets would be put at risk is gross negligence. I requested the money back for this item and was plainly told that there are NO EXCEPTIOS to the 14 day refund policy.
THIS COMPANY DOES NOT WANT REPEAT CUSTOMERS. THEY ONLY WANT NEW SUCKERS THAT THEY CAN FLEECE.

Refuse to honor their refund policy
August 10, 2021

EBurgess refuses to honor their guarantee policy. Trying to get them to send née plants like their policy states when the plants they sent first time died is a run around, I still do not have new plants and have been contacting them since spring of 2021 it is now end of summer. Other companies are easier to work with and honor their policies. They do not deserve 1 star.

I ordered plants from E-Burgess in April of 2021. They were very slow in arriving and when I finally got some of the order, they evidentially decided that they had sent enough (not all that I paid for, however) and were unreachable from that point on. I am still owed $13.99 for raspberry plants that were never sent and a few "freebees" offered by the company including a tomato plant and some bulbs. The website is still active, but email bounces back and I was not able to reach them by the phone number on the website. Do not order from this website.

Negative Stars should be an option
August 7, 2021

I will NEVER order from this company again! They shorted an order back in April.
I contacted them to get the replacement. Always an automated email it took days to get a real reply. And their phone was always busy.
I had to mail back the shipping label from the front of the package. Good thing I hadn't already thrown it away. I emailed them a copy of it BUT NO it had to be mailed back.
I tracked it $4.15 because - how else would I know when they got it! They received it May 27th.
I sent emails requesting the replacement status about every two weeks. It is in process... it is in process.
Then they mailed me a merchant certificate. $6.88 for the missing plant.
I went to use it today 8/4/21 and of course I need to use it in full, so I put 2 packs of seeds in my cart and - THE SHIPPING IS $9.99! Even for a packet of seeds! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
They need to improve their order tracking and customer service.
I think they require people to return the package to make it harder to get a refund and then for them to give a credit voucher just burns me.

Long wait for dead plants
August 1, 2021

It only took 4 months to get part of my order and most of that was dead already. This is twice this company has ripped me off. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Never again I will use there catalogs for toilet paper because that's all they are good for. Do your self a favor and don't order from them and buy your plants at your local nursery.

Not The Company It Used To Be
July 28, 2021

I placed an online order for over $200 through Burgess on 3/17/2021
My credit card was charged on 3/26/2021

6 weeks later on 4/18/2021 I contacted them asking where my order was. 2 days later on 4/20/2021 they responded saying that they were now shipping to my area.

Almost one month later on 5/14/2021 I received an email with a FedEx tracking number saying they had shipped my plants to me although according to the tracking number FedEx did not receive the package to ship from them until Tuesday, 5/18/2021.

I received a plastic bag of my plants I ordered on 5/20/2021

Most of the plants were shipped bareroot which was explained in their descriptions. None of the bareroot plants were wrapped or included any moisture in wet/damp paper towel around their roots for the trip. Most of the bareroot plants were dead or close to dead and not worth planting.

The Thuja trees that I paid $84.99 for were dried out and turning yellow and brown. According to their website, they ship 1 to 2 foot tall trees. These trees were 8 inches tall at best.

The Sweet Mock Orange bushes, shipped bareroot and dried out with little to no green in stems, according to their website, they ship 1 to 3 foot plants. The longest branch of the two bushes was maybe 7 inches tall.

The Dwarf Josee Reblooming Lilac although somewhat moist, was sickly looking and according to their website, was supposed to be shipped potted. It was not shipped potted.

The Quaking Jumbo Aspen, shipped bareroot with no moisture source, dried out with no green inside the bark, according to their website, was supposed to be 3 to 4 feet tall was 15 inches tall.

According to their website Limited Warranty I had to return the plants at my expense for a refund of only the purchase price which would not include the $9.99 shipping they charged me.

They sent me inferior products, not packaged to survive shipping, not what they described on their website, and I was expected to not only eat the original shipping costs but return the plants back to them at my expense for a purchase price refund which I did at a cost of $16.00.

From my return tracking number I know they received the plants back 2 days later yet it took over 3 weeks, 3 emails and 2 phone calls to get my refund.

This company has gone so far downhill from it's former days. Look elsewhere when buying plants online.

I ordered a set of 2 hardy Pecan trees. What i received was one dead stick. No moisture retention on the roots and it was 90 degrees the day it arrived. Just a note that i ordered from 3 different places and the other 2 had plastic and gel on the roots to retain moisture.

I Contacted them immediately via emails and told them that i was missing a Tree and that the one i received looked dead but I followed the instructions that came with it that said it was just dormant so I should soak it and plant it anyways. After 2 weeks i received a response on how to file for a return that said "mail us the shipping label for any issues.

I did what many internet shoppers would do and took a picture of the label and emailed it to them. After another week i received the exact same message that i did the first time and this time I replied again with another copy of the photo. A week later i received another message from them with information on how to file a claim and this time i noticed that it said to "Mail" a copy of the shipping label and that they would keep it on file. I finally figured out that they meant US mail. How Quaint. And to get a "Refund" you have to return the merchandise within 14 days of receipt. I am not sure how you know to do that if they instruct you to plant it even if it looks dead because it is "dormant" and they only send you one of the two things you ordered.

I asked for a refund but they provided a merchandise credit. At least that has free shipping so i may try to order from them for no more than the merchandise credit. I will have to mail that order to them as well as they only honor the paper copy. We will see next spring if they lose that too.

In my opinion this is a simply HORRIBLE company to work with and i would strongly advise that you look elsewhere for any nursery stock. This spring i ordered over 20 trees online as they cost a fraction of what you can buy them at a retailer for. At this point i have 3 trees that appear to have not made it and one that never even arrived. The 2 that were not from eburgess.com have already been replaced by the seller.

Buyer beware, if you want living stock i would look elsewhere.

I never write reviews but hope to save others from huge disappointment. I bought the space saver pyramid garden with 25 free strawberry plants and could not get the strawberry plants to grow. I am an avid gardener with years of success with my garden. I used the right soil and got nothing. The rings were not very attractive either. I tried to get a replacement by sending in my labeled bags the plants came in only to find they would not honor it because it had been over 6 months since bought. I bought another 25 plants and they did not grow either. I also bought the shade garden and had minimal success with it.

Never again
July 13, 2021

I am an avid gardener. I can grow anything from seed and have yet to kill a plant without help from, say, the neighbor's dog lifiting his leg.

I was so excited to build and have all my garden beds this year! So I ordered my plants and found a "pyramid garden" from burgess, as well as many different berries and some asparagus.

First, cedar (wood) sky rocketed (though we DID find some clearanced, so I eventually got my gardens anyway!). Then my "easy to assemble... beautiful addition to your landscaping..." pyramid garden arrived.

FIRST, it was damaged. Second, I dont know who thinks this $110 old, shined up, bendable bumper from a 1984 Ford Bronco is a "beautiful addition to your landscaping," but surely that person is NOT ME.

Ok - ill wait for the plants and see what happens.

Plants arrived. Asperagus roots already have icky stuff on the roots, so my confidence has waned. I called them 3 times a day for over a week. Nothing but a busy signal. Tried emailing... no response. As a last resort, I contacted my credit card company, asking ONLY for the money back for the pyramid and the asparagus. Burgess responded with "arrived fine," and my claim was dismissed.

At this point, the "King Kong," "as big as an apricot" strawberries are not (maybe next year?), and only 5 of 10 of them took. I planted 25 if the 50 "free" strawberries that came with the amazing pyramid dome, but they didn't take well, either. One of 3 of the raspberries i believe is dead. I am using my $110 bird net over my strawberries. So far, it seems to have worked.

I cut the moldy looking disease off the asparagus and threw it in the ground and I guess we'll see what happens. Haven't dug up the stick thats supposed to be a raspberry, either.

All of the pictures I took and retook are above the 5mb, except the KK Strawberry or there would be more.

I am frustrated over their lack of customer service as well as them not standing behind their product. I will NEVER again order from this company.

Love my plants
July 7, 2021

Burgess has been my go to for plants for years. They take a while to ship right now due to covid staff shortages but you will be pleased with your order when you receive it. They include a newspaper for planting instructions and have a huge variety. I absolutely would recommend ordering but keep in mind that their shipping is very slow and only ship when your plants are to be planted. They also love to give freebies with the orders. Be patient! LOVE THEM!

Don't be fooled by their guarantees
July 6, 2021

I ordered a substantial amount of plants from this company in the winter for spring delivery. The orde came with plants smashed together in boxes. Some were already dead (these were not dormant) and others had visible bug infestations with bites out of the leaves. I tried multiple times to call the company but always got a busy signal. I followed their instructions for a refund by mailing back my original shipping label and they sent it back tome and told me to give it another try and wait for a year before requesting a refund. The plants were already dead. I'm not sure how waiting a year would make a difference. The second time I requested a refund they sent me a coupon for merchandise replacement! Why would I want more merchandise from a company with quality this poor?

Worst Gardening Store
July 2, 2021

Burgess is a great place to order from if you are into dead plants. I should have remembered the sticks-in-the-mud I ordered from them in the past because again, more dead plants arrived for me to waste my time on. This time, I ordered forsythia hedges and festuca grass. Both were DOA! I planted them anyway, just to see if I misjudged and no dice. Also, these deadies arrived about 3 months after I ordered them online and the company did not supply any tracking data until I e-mailed them for it. I should have ordered from Amazon or eBay where I found excellent petunia plugs before. How Burgess stays in business is a mystery. I will never recommend them to anyone I care about.
