I ALMOST made the mistake of DMV renewal via cartagz.com. I typed in the full url for CA DMV and cartagz.com came up on top of the google list. I started to fill out the form, then realized that there were additional fees that were not DMV. People, be careful that you are on the "real" DMV site. There are NO additional charged to use the DMV site. God Speed... LeRoy...

Tried renewing my registration for the first time so since I thought it was convenient I tried using the online service. Searched for the ca dmv site on google and it led me here. So there I was, gave them all my personal info like my ssn and DL # plus credit card info only to find out that they had not processed anything. Nice! I just gave away my info to some crappy website. Today I realized I went to the wrong site when I should have gone to www.dmv.ca.gov. People, you have been warned.

RIP OFF!
May 6, 2013

RIP OFF! I thought I was on the DMV official site, but JUST before I hit 'PAY' I noticed a $30 fee for cartagz, and ANOTHER $5 convenience fee. PLUS incredibly expensive postage! For what? NOTHING! Make sure you are on the DMV official site - no fees and free fast postage. These guys are total rip off merchant pirates - should not be legal! NEVER USE THEM!

I ended up paying over double for my registration. Cartagz got my registration processed OK, but when I got my check from IRS for income tax refund, a levy had been put on my account for the car registration and the entire amount was taken out of my income tax return. So I paid twice. Not sure how all that could have happened, but please be warned of this co

This is a very deceptive website. You are guided to it when you search WWW.DMV.CA.GOV in order to renew your vehicle registration. This is not the Calif. Dept of Motor Vehicles website. Cartagz will charge you $30 plus the renewal cost to renew your registration. Make sure that you get to the real Calif. Dept. Of Motor Vehicles website where you will only pay the renewal cost that's on your paperwork. Don't pay the Cartagz cost.

My boyfriend went to the first site on google to renew his tags. They charged him over $30 to do it, plus $15 to ship overnight, and didn't acutally charge us the full amount owed, so we didn't get the tags. We couldn't pay the remainder through DMV because he had already started the process through cartagz, and the number we had to contact them wouldn't let us actually speak to a person. It asked us for our phone number, which we entered and said it wasn't on record and would hang up on us. The only way we could get the tags was to pay the remainder balance plus an additional $30+ fee. This site is a SCAM, just go to DMV online and pay for free.

I accidentally clicked on it because it came up first when I did a DMV search. I went through the process thinking I was on the DMV website, until I got to the end and saw all the HUGE FEES they'd tacked on to what is a FREE process at the DMV. Who are they kidding? Why aren't these guys in jail?

This is ridiculous on top of our already expensive registration FEES they want to charge $30.00 fee for paying it online. On this site ( https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/vrir/start.do) you can pay it for FREE and its an official DMV site I have used it for the passed 3 years when paying for my registration renewal and other items. CARTAGZ was not even able to find my car using Full Vin and wants to charge 29.99. This is the link to the site to use or free. Https :// www.dmv. Ca. Gov/wasapp/vrir/start. Do

Great Service!
August 31, 2012

Great Service! Great Communication.

I just left this same review on Yelp.com, too. I'm so thankful for Cartagz. I'm an older college student, going through finals and when I'm not working, I'm sleeping. Had some problems with the online DMV renewal because of their own error, but refused to be helpful. I planned to drag myself in as soon as I had a break in my college finals, but then I got really sick with Epstein Barr syndrome which knocked me out of commission. So with the DMV's error and my being sick, I ended up being very late on my registration.

I'm still recovering from the illness and can't be driving around in the heat, much less standing in line (even with an appointment), so I decided to use Cartagz. I read a lot of great reviews about them on various site, and the only bad ones seemed to be from people who don't know how to look at a url, and got angry about the extra fees. So I ordered my renewal (and a $5 printable proof of registration) after hours, and by the time I woke up the next morning I had not only a reply about a couple of items still needed, but also proof of my having at least initiated my registration renewal so I'd have something to show for it, if needed. I emailed Cartagz that my car is a hybrid (verifiable by the VIN) so it doesn't need a smog check, and attached a copy of my proof of insurance. Within MINUTES I had an email and proof of completed registration renewal to print out. I will NEVER go back to the DMV for registration renewal. I will happily pay extra for the Cartagz convenience. For me, it was worth every penny of the reasonable convenience fees and the time I didn't waste driving to and waiting in line at the DMV. Had I ordered during business hours, it definitely would have been faster than actually going to the DMV. Even ordering after hours, it was ridiculously fast, and completely convenient and painless.

For people complaining that they landed on or used Cartagz instead of the DMV, seriously folks, it's your own fault for not paying attention to something as simple as a url. Does http://Cartagz.com really seem anything like http://DMV.gov? Come on.

I wasn't paying attention: I thought I was on the DMV site. The extra fees and recommended services woke me up. I will be more careful next year.

I typed dmv.ca.gov in my address bar, and this website just shows up in my browser, I typed all my information for car registration in this website without knowing that I was in the wrong site. The bad thing is that I give them my cridit card infomation and made the payment. This site is a rip off. They must did something illegal to shows up in other people's browser.

Searched DMV CA on google, saw the "CA DMV Registration Renewal" and clicked on it. After I put in the registration info I saw the "CARTAGZ" fees. THen I realized I was on the wrong site. The CARTAGZ site looks just like the DMV site that allows for online registration payment. Hard to tell the difference except that the DMV site does not charge for the service. MY DMV registration was $141 on the CA DMV site but would have been 141 + 29.95 + the convenience fee. What a scam. My DMV stickers come through the mail, no line and no wait without the extra fees just by using the DMV web site.

My boyfriend's car was towed while he was deployed with the Navy. Yes, his registration was expired, but I used cartagz' service to renew it since I was unable to make it to the DMV. At first, the service was good. The order went through and it seemed a lot easier than taking a day off of work to stand in line at the dmv. I checked with Cartagz twice to make sure the order went through correctly and they assured me everything was all set--but the package never arrived. After many emails (they do not have a phone number) they told me my package was sent regular mail instead of overnight delivery and it would be here at the end of the week. That is a big difference when the car is being charged by the hour in the tow lot. They refunded my service and shipping charges, and are over-nighting me a replacement sticker, but that is nothing compared to the three extra days of fees from the lot. One email said, "there was just a mistake in the shipping" but when you take my money and promise to renew and ship my registration, "just a mistake in the shipping" is a big deal. It would have been faster, cheaper and much less stressful for me and my boyfriend to just do it the old fashion way and bypass Cartagz' terrible service.

Absolutely a scam

Absolutely a scam. They started requesting I send them personal information that could be used for identity theft. Run from this site. How did they get on the dmv website?

They rape your wallet
January 15, 2012

They rape your wallet. I still did it because I had expired tags and wanted to get the instant email copy of the registration on a weekend (so I'm somewhat legal). Not only do they charge you outrageous shipping fees, they charge $5 to send the e-copy too.

Cartagz is a total scam
December 24, 2011

Cartagz is a total scam. Registration can be accomplished online through the DMV site for free (no RIN required). Why pay $35 in fees (or more) to get your registration? Furthermore, they attempted to charge me $192 for my 'DMV fees' when the DMV only charged $165. Apparently, they may add an additional $27 Cartagz fee to one's DMV fees. That is not legal.

Cartagz is a rip off because their fees are not disclosed up front. To avoid going to the post office on the last day before a penalty attached, I paid online, choosing the standard $2 mailing option. (Cartagz strongly urges overnight delivery for even higher fees "because of the sensitivity of the documents." Hah! No where on the itemization of costs was Cartagz' $29 fee listed. Only after you click the "I accept" and "process the payment" button is the fee listed. Had I simply gone to the post office and mailed -- postmarked as of the due date -- the registration with a check I would have only paid $89. Instead my cost was $117.10, including the $29 service fee, a $2.10 convenience fee and $2 in shipping charges. That's more than a 30% processing fee. Had the hidden fees been more discernable, I could also have gone to AAA and paid a $5 convenience fee and received my tags immediately. Had I simply paid late, my total cost would have been $105. This is a rip off.

It was great!
November 4, 2011

It was great! And I would just like to remind everybody that you are paying for a service. So NO, the $29.95 was not to much to pay for not having to stand in line for hours at the DMV :)
