Burpee has 84 customer reviews and ranks 84th in the Plants category. Common review topics include customer service.
Ordered six packs of tomato seeds including Orange Slice Hybrid. I germinated probably 6 of those seeds and the plants looked odd. I sent a picture to Burpee and they said "oops" it's probably broccoli rabe. They offered me a new pack of seeds or a refund. I responded asking for a refund and they sent me an email saying they were sending me another pack of seeds. I responded saying I didn't want the seeds, no answer. I tried to write a review on their website and the review link is dead. The plant in question is the one on the left.
I bought a plant in fall 2020. It never germinated or bore fruit. I decided to give it some time to see if it would flower or fruit and it never did. The pandemic was distracting honestly and I didn't notice their 1 yr germination guarantee meant that if it didn't germinate EVER they wouldn't help. I emailed customer service and they said very coldly: Your purchase is no longer covered for refund or replacement.
It NEVER bore fruit. It's not like it bore fruit within a year and then died. They didn't even apologize - a human touch makes a HUGE difference and they didn't have one. Very disappointing customer service.
2 years in a row and after 8 weeks 4 out of 150 seeds started, their seeds are bad so don't waste your money
I ordered a set of plants very early in the year that included a Black Beauty eggplant. The order was sent in two separate boxes a month apart, which is fine- the second box had tomato plants and they were sent at the right time for my zone.
The first box had the eggplant though. It arrived i. April, looking pretty rough. After following all the instructions and keeping it in a sunny window due to the weather, it continued to get worse until it died four days after arrival. The other two plants in the box, a basil and a mint, flourished in the same time and the same window.
I sent in a ticket about the eggplant and 10 days later had not received any response. Calling the number on the website also got no response. After a significant amount of time with no response I submitted a review. The review was supposedly accepted but has never shown on the website. In fact, the most recent review of those eggplants is from 3 years ago.
I bought the same variety of eggplant from a local nursery who started selling them about the same time I received the sickly one from Burpees. Those have both been far stronger from the beginning.
I ordered plants in January and they never let me know when they would be shipped. Of the six plants on my ordered they sent them one at a time. I think this place is overpriced for the quality of plant you get. I won't use them again
Ok, so I bought '1' package of Strawberry Blonde Sunflower seeds in the beginning of April and I never received the seeds. I could see on the tracking where they are, but no movement after 10 days! I call and explain the problem and they send a 2nd packet of seeds and the same thing happens from a different location! Soooo...I call back and request a refund. The customer service person said they will process it and send me a confirmation email. Soooo...they never send me the email. I call back, and the woman states she is sending an email and guess what?! Any person that has to make that many calls to get ONE PACKET OF SEEDS will certainly never give this company any business ever again! Sure they may say big deal, who needs you, its only a packet of seeds, should reexamine what happened to Block Buster video!
Treat me right and I'll tell 3 people. Treat me wrong and I'll tell 10 people!
Happy Growing!
What a waste of money! Delphinium I received only had 1 leaf attached. Plant is so small can't imagine it will survive!
I ordered 92 of various daffodils in September 2022. They shipped in October and, I planted them within 3 weeks (I live outside of Dallas). 4 bulbs bloomed - 4! I called customer service and they did refund all my money. You're better off getting bulbs in a bag from Home Depot or Walmart, which is sad, since Burpee specializes in bulbs!
I have had problems with Burpee shipping live plants as designated for my agricultural zone. Generally the plant arrive in ok condition. Recently, they have claimed a computer error put my shipment back a month and a half even though ship dates started March 27. After repeated calls, email and FB messages to the company to correct the error, they are now stating they have 14 business days to ship it, which will still put me outside of optimal planting time. They constantly avoid correction of their error and do nothing to expedite the product which I have paid for since February. The customer service is spotty and most seem to try to make excuses.
I ordered plants 6 weeks ago - never delivered, order never updated. Our planting season in central Florida begins in mid Feb.
I e-mailed customer service and it took them 5 days to get back to me claiming they were shipped - no one in customer service researched my complaint since the website stated my plants were never shipped! I then called customer service - no clue! A manager from shipping was supposed to get back to me - no call! Called customer service AGAIN - no clue! A manager from shipping was supposed to get back to me - second time no call! I waited a third day - still no call. This has been going on TEN DAYS without an answer! I called customer service AGAIN today - still no clue! I told them at this point I wanted a full refund - enough was enough! Customer service refused to give me a refund until they heard from shipping to confirm my order was not shipped. Ten minutes on the phone and nothing. I asked to speak to a manager. I was told AGAIN someone would call me back. I said that was not acceptable and wanted to speak to a manager right away. 20 minutes into my phone call and never spoke to a manager but FINALLY shipping confirmed that my order was never shipped and I got my refund. One of the worst customer service experience of any company I have dealt with: no sympathy, no empathy, not listening to the needs of the customer, not caring to make things right after all I have been thru, etc. I am a new customer and have spent hundreds of dollars this season. I will NEVER order from Burpee again after the way I was treated. Has this company grown too large and forgotten about customer service and care? What a shame!
This business sucks. They don't care about their customers in the least. It's planting season and I have no potatoes or sweet potatoes to plant thanks to this over priced company. Do yourself a favor and order elsewhere
I ordered two live plants. Email said they were delivered by UPS to my porch. After looking all around and asking neighbors on both sides, I found nothing. I opened two tickets as directed on Burpees website and posted a request for customer service on one of their Facebook posts. I never heard from them. It's not their fault UPS didn't deliver to me but UPS said work with the seller and I received No customer service. I won't buy from Burpee again.
Ordered an Olympian fig plant, a rose and 2 gooseberries. The fig and rose arrived today in one box. The fig plant was ONE INCH tall. Info said 4 to 8 inches tall. Customer service said that means plant will reach 8 inches when MATURE. What a JOKE! A mature fig tree with large figs 8" tall. So I cancelled gooseberries. Kept straggly rose and tiny fig because I must pay for return; and am too tired haggling, but will NEVER BUY from Burpee again. Pathetic. Picture of $30+ plant in my pot.
Order placed 1/24 - most items 4 of 7 were shipped (seeds). 3 plants remain MIA even though I have paid for them. Contacted Burbee 2 24 to get status- got a commitment to get an answer with 48 Hrs- it is 120 hrs later and no answer.
I was excited to get my herbal garden seeds but when I got home and a few days later when I was ready to start to get the germination going I was reading the label and it said *not for human consumption * this is on basil, cilantro and lavender. Now I'm worried if I feed my family these are we going to get sick?
I ordered garlic to plant this fall - the stuff I received was sprouted, soft and had brown spots on the cloves - looks like it was stored in a basement long term! Out of all the bulbs I got I hardly had enough healthy specimens for 2 small rows! Very disappointed and I will not be ordering from them again
I surprised there are so many negative reviews, I have ordered from several other online sites that sent me are beautiful. I order Hibiscus and these have not blossomed yet, but I know they do not always blossom in Y1. I also received two rose plants that have bloomed with beautiful mini roses. Same thing with my hollyhocks. I would HIGHLY recommend and will absolutely order from them again for my flowers!
I have been using Burpee seeds for decades, the last 2 years have been a disasterous waste of time, money and precious water.
Green beans, at best 1 out of 16 seeds germianted. The majority of the plants are stunted and not producing at all. There are some nice looking plants, but the yield is very low. They are supposed to be tender, stringless beans. They are stringless but fairly tough.
Tomatoes, I purchased beefsteak, I attached a photo of the tomatoes that grew. I think 1 plant could be a beefsteak, the rest are small and odd shaped. The yield on most plants range from zero to light.
Cabbage, same germination issues, and never developed a head, plants are stunted.
Cantaloupe, had 6 seeds that germianted, the plants are stunted and produced a grand total of 3 small melons.
Red and white onions, zero germination.
I am an experienced gardener, the seeds I have harvested myself have a high germination rate, growth rate, and production rate.
Before seeing the reviews I decided to give burpee another chance, hoping for a late crop which would be better than no crop.
These seeds have been a disaster as I usually able to process a couple years of food and still have plenty for other families.
If these seeds fail, I will not be purchasing seeds from burpee again. I put in a lot to time, back breaking work, money, and precious water into growing food, do not expect a well known seed company to be putting out garbage like they have been.
I grow in Ontario, Canada. I bought Burpee sugar snap pea seeds ('Super Snappy'). I was really looking forward to the crop as sugar snap peas are outrageously expensive in the grocery stores here. However, what ended up growing are Snow Peas! I am very disappointed. Too late in the growing season (mid-July) to start a new and crop and also, every variety of seeds are sold out.
I bought a pack of the organic yellow summer squash planted 4 seeds and a week later I have 4 squash plants very happy with my seeds from berpee.
