They don't verify that jobs posted on their website are legit so you end up applying to more scams than real jobs.
Their customer service doesn't care that scammers now have all your personal information and they're extremely rude.

Hi Ady,

I'm sorry to hear that you encountered a scam on Backstage. We take the safety of our users seriously. When a casting call is posted on Backstage, it's automatically labeled as being an un-reviewed 'Instant' item with a scam-prevention warning. Then Backstage's team of casting specialists check every item for authenticity, at which point potential scams are promptly removed. Additionally, Backstage carefully monitors for suspicious site activity and examines feedback from the acting community to identify and eliminate any potential scams that may have slipped through the cracks. We also recently implemented a more secure background check system that we hope will track anything that was missed due to human error.

Please email us at [email protected] and we'd be happy to investigate this for you further! - Stephanie

So we went to one class, did nothing for us. They snuck in an auto-renew on the credit card. I called the DAY I got the statement and they said SORRY you needed to call within 10 days (of course planned perfectly by them since the statement in monthly and didn't even show up within 10 days of the charge.) Pretty much just an unethical company that preys on people assuming they wont read fine print.

Hello Dwight,
I'm sorry if you were disappointed with your time at Backstage. We offer subscriptions that auto-renew like most subscriptions nowadays. We also email all Annual and Semi-Annual users a month before their renewal, letting them know it's coming up. If you'd like to email us at [email protected] we'd be happy to review your request.
Best, Anna

My daughter and I were in New York 4 years ago. My daughter was told by her college professor to check into backstage.com to look for auditions while we were in New York for the week. My daughter used the backstage.com service and then cancelled that same month. We have never been back to New York and have had no use for backstage.com. Unfortunately, I am not always diligent at checking my credit card statements until just recently. Backstage.com has charged me $149.95 every year for the past 3 years without my approval despite my daughter cancelling the very month she used it. BE AWARE! If backstage.com has your credit card number they may continue to use it. Please don't make the same mistake we did. Do not cancel by phone... keep proof of your cancellation and make sure you watch your credit card statements. I have a feeling that we are not the only ones that have been a victim of this practice at backstage.com!

Hi Kimberly,

As my colleague Ben mentioned in his email correspondence with you last week, unfortunately we have no record of your daughter contacting us to cancel her subscription four years ago. We send a reminder email to all subscribers who have purchased a long term subscription (in your daughter's case, an annual subscription), as well as provide a 10 day grace period where subscribers are welcome to contact us for a full cancellation and refund as we know these subscriptions can sometimes be forgotten. However, we have not received any requests to cancel or receive a refund since your daughter's renewal in October of each year until this past week. Since your most recent renewal took place over 3 months ago, we are unable to issue a refund for the subscription at this point. - Stephanie

Poor customer service
January 23, 2020

EDIT** Backstage did the right thing and chose to honour my refund so I have amended my review from 1 Star to 4.

I needed assistance with simply requesting a refund for one month's subscription and was met with rude customer service and a robotic-like tone stating, 'our terms of use do not allow for it', it's a simple customer request and should be honoured, 'Ben' also rudely responded at one point sarcastically to my request with, 'alrighty', he was quite condescending and dismissive. They should step up their customer service levels and just do the right thing and honor a refund if the customer did not use the service.

Hi Josiah, we're sorry to hear that you were unhappy with our Customer Service and felt that the tone used by our representatives were rude. That was not our intention at all, and we apologize if this was upsetting to you.

I'm seeing that you have come to a resolution with the Customer Service Manager. Please note that the representative was only stating the Terms of Service that was agreed to when your subscription was purchased and following our procedure. - Stephanie

Literally any other casting site is better than Backstage. Actor's Access is amazing and so is Casting Networks- they have legitimate projects, they check who's posting beforehand and their customer service is truly helpful. Backstage allows projects that have not been checked yet to publicly post. I've had so many unprofessional experiences and interactions on Backstage and since sharing this with more people, have been told by those more experienced than me, that Backstage is a total waste of time. I think it used to be good back in the day, but now it's associated with non-professional postings and roles. They also automatically enroll you in a following year after signing up, just like a really bad gym membership, whereas after each year, Actor's Access does not charge you, they contact you to let you know your year is ending and to see if you would like to renew. You can find the same postings and better on AA and CN.

Hi Jessie,

We’re sorry to hear that you’ve had experiences like that in the past. At Backstage we try to provide access to all types of casting opportunities ranging from roles for the beginner to the experienced, and look to get them in front of actors ASAP. Generally, all notices on Backstage are reviewed and go through a vetting and approval process by our Casting Team. If there is ever a particular casting notice on Backstage that you would like to verify before our Casting Team is able to, you are always welcome to reach out to the Customer Support Team (at [email protected]) and we'd be happy to investigate further. We’re also happy to help you with any billing issues you encounter.

Beware - Honest Review
December 23, 2019

I am a full time actor and performer with approx. 19 years of experience. Signing up for Backstage last year was one of my first times trying a "paid" site. After a full year of applying for jobs via Backstage, I can honestly say I did not get booked for a single one. A few weeks ago I was checking my monthly credit card statement and noticed a charge from Backstage for $150! I was very surprised and called and emailed them immediately. I did not know I was automatically set up for auto renew. Ok, I get it... a lot of companies do this sort of thing. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is... They told me I had 10 days to cancel and that the 10 days was up. They NEVER sent a single email, txt, mail, etc. receipt after charging my card so there was no way (until getting my cc statement) that I could have possibly known. I kindly explained that multiple times and gave them every single opportunity to do the right thing. The customer service manager, Richard Burridge, was dismissive and said I had logged into the account after the renewal. Of course I did! First off, I was looking for their contact info to cancel, and secondly, I thought it was still my first year and did not know they had charged me $150. I kindly explained that I did not get any value the first year, so I would never have renewed, and that if they would have sent me any kind of receipt at all I could have easily called within the "10 day" period. Again, I was extremely kind in my communication to Richard and gave him every opportunity to make things right. I'm sure I'm not the first or last person this will happen to, but if my honest review can help a single actor friend, I hope it does! Beware of these dishonest business practices!

Hi Malinda,

I'm sorry to hear that you've been unhappy with your experience on Backstage. I took a look at your conversation with Richard and unfortunately what he stated is correct. We sent you a reminder email a month prior to the renewal of your annual subscription, as we do for all users who are subscribed to our long term subscriptions. I've confirmed that this was sent to you and would be happy to provide proof of this if you'd like to contact us directly at [email protected].

As Richard stated in his email, we're seeing that you also applied to several projects on Backstage after the renewal of this subscription, therefore making use of the service. While we cannot offer you a refund at this time, we'd be happy to assist you if you have any questions about how to make the best use of your subscription for the rest of the year. Once again, you are welcome to reach us at [email protected] with any other questions or concerns! Happy Holidays.

I had a subscription for 2 months and I've tried to cancel my subscription multiple times, and have not been contacted so am unable to. Backstage never got me any jobs and the ones that did contact me wanted me to pay them for the privilege of working with them!

Be careful when providing your credit card to this website. They will continue charging renewals at higher prices. Their refund policy is made in such a way that by the time you see the transaction in your credit card statement that you can't ask for refund. They will charge a full year at $165. They totally rely on this as part of their revenue system. They make a living out of scamming starving artists.

Now let's talk about the website: the design is flawed. Looks nice but the navitation is all screwed. After each time you apply for a role, be prepared to having to browse all the way from the start adding the filters because this website is just not designed for someone to apply to multiple roles. Once you apply for one role it is almost as a check out. You have to go back again to the "search function" enter the filters and jump all the pages till you reach where you were in the beginning.

Most ads are for student productions. Lack of professionalism is to be expected. You will rarely find an actual role, for an actual production. It seems that this website is for productions that can't get actual talent and are looking for unpaid actors.

There are several different services to become members with to support your acting career. Hands down i really value backstage for the insight and range of industry news and information. It seems as if any question or concern you have has been or will be addressed by a knowledgeable team member. Thanks for the help and the advice backstage!

I had a years subscription to Backstage and got a few gigs that made it worth the subscription. The only negative that I found was that their was more posts for Theater, short films and student films then anything else. I think because of other subscriptions like Casting Networks and Actors access Backstage needs to offer more or lower their subscription cost.

Hi Kylie,

Thanks for reaching out and bringing this to my attention. Backstage's platform serves as host to thousands of casting notices, which should only be dealing with the hiring of talent to work on the project. Any crowdfunding or pay-to-play scenarios are separate, and something that is not condoned by Backstage. Did you report this notice to us? If not, please contact our Customer Support team at [email protected] and I will have it investigated immediately.

Best,
Francis

Customer service is good, just wish there were more SAG AFTRA projects. A lot of "student films" and non-paying projects.
Years ago the "paper" used to also have survival jobs.
That seems to have disappeared.

SCAM company refused to end the monthly charges on our credit card. We never authorized any such charges and never used any of their services. American Express actually had to BLOCK them from future charges. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!

Hi Lynne,

I'm sorry that you had a less than stellar experience with us here at Backstage. We do offer several plans that include an initially free trial, and then per our terms of service, roll into an automatically renewing subscription similar to programs such as Netflix or a gym membership. Also per our terms of service, you can contact us to cancel at any time. While the Monthly Subscriptions are not eligible for a refund, you still have full access for all time paid.

Backstage has been around since 1960 and is one of the most trusted resources for actors in the world. In addition to publishing a weekly magazine for actors, our casting platform includes a messaging service, a digital profile, an auditions calendar, entertainment-industry resources, and access to over 6,000 roles for projects actively casting across the U.S.—with new roles being added 24/7. The talent database is searched by filmmakers and casting departments over 2 million times a month.

Thousands of actors get work through Backstage every day, but don't take our word for it, check out #IGotCast or view our celebrity testimonials here: https://www.backstage.com/celebrity-testimonials/

As always, our customer service team is available to answer any questions or concerns you may have, and give you advice on our customers careers. Reach us weekdays from 10am to 6pm EST at [email protected]. If you'd like to email us at [email protected] we can take a look at your account and conversation with our representative and make sure everything was handled properly.

I signed up for a year subscription and I applied for about everything possible. Anyone who contacted me back, either for an audition or an extra roll, always canceled last minute which isn't backstages fault but when I contacted customer service to let them know that I was getting absolutely no use out of the website and wanted a partial refund (because I know they do monthly plans for people) they absolutely refused to give me a dime back and said that they sent an email prior to my renewal which is hilarious because I never had a renewal in the first place as this is my first time signing up for backstage so not only does their customer service not know wtf they're talking about but it looks like I'll have this worthless subscription for a whole year (first, only, and last year). I will never be coming back to this website again and I am unfortunately out $100. Thanks Backstage!

Hello Nicole, thanks for your feedback. We're sorry you had a negative experience with us. Upon sign up, our terms of service state that we're an automatically renewing subscription service, similar to Netflix, gym memberships, and self-storage companies as a few examples. Per our terms of service, you can contact us to cancel at any time and you're eligible for a complete refund if you contact us within 10 days of the payment. Once again, we're sorry to here about your negative experience, but we wish you the best in your acting career.
