American Express Reviews Summary

American Express has faced significant criticism regarding its customer service and the reliability of its rewards program. Many customers express disappointment with unfulfilled promises related to benefits and rewards, alongside complaints about poor communication and unhelpful support representatives. Issues such as deceptive billing practices and unresolved disputes further exacerbate customer dissatisfaction. Despite a long history of customer loyalty, recent experiences suggest a decline in service quality, prompting many to seek alternatives. Overall, while the brand has a legacy of prestige, current feedback indicates a pressing need for improvement in customer relations and service transparency.

I'm very disappointed in the decline in customer service and the loss of benefits on the AmEx gold card.

Having a question about my bill, I called American Express customer service. The person who took my call, Abraham, was the perfect example of what a customer service rep should be. He was professional, knowledgeable, personal and committed to giving the customer a positive result to the impending problem. My problem was involved and he followed it through to the last detail.
I was an extremely happy American Express customer when we ended the call. Thank you to his supervisor for selecting such a dedicated customer service rep

After the story below I checked my FICO and I am at 787,14% revolving utilization and zero missed payments. I'd think AMEX would want to keep me?

It is better to leave AMEX. I've had an AMEX card since the early 1970's. For years it was a Gold card and then I got tired of the annual card membership fee. I received a Business Card. I'm now 70 and a few years ago I placed the card on automatic pay. Shame on me for not keeping track. The last I knew the interest rate was a bit under 10%. I've been carrying a balance of $4,500. Today I decided to check my account and was astounded to see that my interest rate is 16.49%! What! I was told it has been that rate for three years. Errrr! Cancer stuff and time flew by without me checking.

Charging this rate during times of historically low Fed Funds I realized these people have been screwing me (sorry for the pejorative sentence). My credit rating is good, I never miss payments and they've been charging me this rate! Shame on me for allowing it. Shame on them for doing it. So today I'll pay off that rate and end my relationship with AMEX. I told them my plan and there was a time that AMEX would have looked at the length of time a person was with them and tried to keep them as a customer. IT is clear this is NOT the AMEX of old. Or maybe it's because we buy all our cars in cash, house is paid off, we don't use our credit cards, etc.?

I say leave them.

I recently was scammed by a company impersonating a famous airline and ended up disputing the amount with AMEX, where I learned their fraud protection is not protecting you but a shady company who were scamming many people left and right. The AMEX representative told me yeah I knew it was a fraud by I could do nothing and you had to pay the amount.
I wish I knew about what fraud is registered to AMEX to not use them for buying stuff other than small and less expensive.
I will never use AMEX for large purchases again and I decreased my credit limit to a bare minimum.
Please be advised they will side with shady companies, not their clients, and do not use their cards with peace of mind that you have fraud protection. Because in reality, it does not work for your benefit.

American Express became a scam. It uses third party credit company in Israel that do not provide any service for customers what so ever, they are unreachable, they don't call back, and they only work from 9 am to 4 pm, and when you reach them it is always we will call you tomorrow, or you will see this in 8 days,,,,,, bla bla bla. American Express became a franchise! Allowing bad companies to print their logo on the credit card.
In case of Israel the company called isracard American Express and you only realize this when you have a problem! Reputation out of the window

I tried paying my balance due to website not working and the agent said he could not take my payment even though they take money out of my account every month. I am the spouse and have been granted the access to information & payment but yet he would not help. Very disappointed and we will not be using our card in the future.

Worst service
May 16, 2022

Poor customer service and products offering. Whilst the perks that come with the cards may seem good, such as complimentary flights, however it can take several days, many hours of long wait time on the phone to try and finally make a booking, or end up finding their flight tickets are much more expensive than that stated on the airline website. It will also come with multiple restrictions on using the credits then several long wait on the call to get to the representative again to find out their system was not up to date with your information so they will need to check with the airline to get the details then to pass the details to you for you to call the airline, stay on long wait, and with no confidence that you can make the booking successfully either. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICES EVER. It will kill half of your lifespan talking to them to try and resolve issues because at the end no issues get resolved.

3 times they have reduced my limit. Twice when I needed it. All three times after a substantial payment over the minimum, they reinstated it. I don't know why they constantly run my credit. They say they reduce it because my credit score changed. It's very Inc!

I have been a 20 YR AMEX customer and in the past they have always been diligent in protecting my interests and given me confidence in using their card. However, recently I purchased tickets for a MLB Spring Training game which was cancelled from a website that stated a "100% money back Guarantee". I filed a dispute with AMEX with the conclusion that I was correct and I was issued a refund. 2 months later they recharged me saying that the merchant's policy was to not offer refunds. When I clearly made my case with evidence, their answer smugly was "You may always cancel your card"……because after discuss it with them on the phone, there answer was "It is now too late". That was their fallback position when they lost the argument…. After 3 months. HORRIBLE customer service.

SCAMMERS
April 23, 2022

We purchased two $500.00 gift cards and took a picture of these cards. When we returned home the cards were missing.we immediatelt called the number on the back of the card.the agent said she would void the cards and we would receive a refund in about a week. Which was thursday.we received nothing. Oncthe agent said it takes about three hours to process a payment.we called them immediately 1/2 hour after we lost them.we called them today an was told their agent was wrong and we would not receive a refund. I believe they are a fraudulent compsny. They need to be shut-down.

Customer Service is non-existent. In the past Amex had amazing, highly trained, agents who could correct issues and give you the feeling at the end of the call that they really did value you as a customer.

Most of their agents are poorly trained, poorly paid (overseas) who read scripts. If you want to save some more money Amex why don't you hire parrots to read your scripts and you will only have to pay them in sunflower seeds?

If you don't start listening to your customer complaints it is going to seriously affect your bottom line.

We (Gava Commercial Group LLC) have a business credit card from American express. There was a double charge by a merchant.

The info follows:
The dispute Ref. No. D-******* has lots of supporting documentation to show the double charge by the merchant. American express did not even look into the uploaded documents to come to a conclusion. American Express is so much biased toward the merchant, I reopened the dispute. It is asking me to upload any supporting documentation, I uploaded a couple of documents. American express's behavior is such non-sensical, it kept all the newly uploaded documents into the previously uploaded documents section. The dispute again says it is awaiting my response.

American Express is not committed to protecting small consumers like my company.

A 5th grader can understand the documentation and the charge in question, I am thinking American express intentionally does not align with the truth. American Express is afraid that it loses the commission if they undo the charges.

How low can you go, American Express?

I pledge not to use American express cards anymore from now on.

Thank you for being an unethical company.

We have been using AMEX in our business for over 22 years. Even though they have almost double the rates versus Visa/MC, we used them to offer another form of payment for our customers. Today, out of nowhere without any notice, they decided to cancel/close our account. We processed thousands of transactions annually of AMEX with very few chargebacks (maybe 4 or 5 last year) and/or any issues with our products/services. When I called to find out what was wrong with our account and after being transferred multiple times, I was finally transferred to a "specialist" who could answer my questions. The woman told me that our account had been closed. When I asked her why she said that she could not tell me because that was "proprietary information". She said that "a few different people" reviewed our account and it had been decided to close the account. I asked her who reviewed our account and what were they basing their decision on. Again she replied that she could not tell me because that was proprietary information. I told her it was bullcrap trying to hide behind some kind of proprietary privilege. How are we to correct something if we are unaware of what the issue actually is. I told her to put herself in the shoes of the business owner and merchant. If she had a business that was depending on AMEX as a form of payment and without notice, they canceled her account, how would she feel? We the businesses are bringing business to AMEX. There is no other way they would have business coming in if it weren't for businesses offering it to their customers. WE ARE THE CUSTOMER! But unfortunately, AMEX doesn't seem to understand this truth. I believe, it is just a matter of time and they will cease to exist as a company. As I told the woman on the phone, "this is a terrible way to conduct business!" And it is! You can't treat others poorly and expect that you won't affect them negatively. In many cases, it will come back multiplied. Keep going like you have been AMEX and you will become nothing more than a memory of the past.

American Express offers the worst products on the market, zero customer service and you cannot even online chat or email them if you are a customer. Being charged interest when the card has a zero balance for the last month and tried to call them about it, but the system hangs up on you after you go through the automated prompts. I have about 14 other things to complain about, but it would take too long to list here. Do NOT, AND I MEAN NOT, get an AMEX for any reason whatsoever as you will hate your life immediately if you carry any of their products.
