I have enjoyed AP immensely. There are amateurs who write from the heart and deserve to have their day, and there are some very fine writers as well. I have not had any of the unpleasant activities listed in a few complaints. I have two poetry books published. They are not Shakespeare, but they are good. There are snobs in writing as well as anywhere else, and there are occasionally people who are a pain. But that's life. Get over it. This is a great site.
Before I review this site I would like to say that all you who are giving bad reviews must give careful evidence of what you are saying or you will not be believed. Warnings will not be enough. No one is going to listen to a warning if there is not solid reason to back it up. Like making the claim 'they steal your identity and poetry'. Give us evidence!
I can only speak of my experience. And I am quite a naive person so if there are shady things going on even with my own work I would not be aware of it. I can say I have had strange things happen that were not resolved. Their moderators only know how to fix routine things. I don't think they have training in security issues for their staff sadly. This is the only negative I see on this site. No matter what your problem they will just say it's a computer glitch. And perhaps they are right.
But I love this site so much that I was willing to pay a lifetime membership fee to stay there, and I don't regret it. I've been a member for 10 years now. I have also even thought of offering money for yearly scholarships every year so they can offer lifetime memberships to those who have talent for writing but can't afford to pay. I haven't taken this step yet but it shows that I think this is a very solid site with good people on it.
This site offers free poetry classes of every type you can think of, there are very skilled members to learn from. They have contests whereby you can test your skills against others. It has a forum whereby you can ask specific questions to address learning blocks. They encourage relationship development through groups and private messages. They even encourage and recommend publishing options and help you get started. The only thing this site is missing is active publishing recruits from different agencies who would choose you. I'm surprised publishers aren't using a site like this to recruit and create contract deals etc. with individuals.
@CureC I can only come to the conclusion that you have had issues with Allpoetry is because you failed to adhere to their rules. Plagiarism is taken seriously and I myself found a poem of yours that you were claiming the rights to, had been written at least 3 yrs earlier. If you were the original author all you had to do was state in your AN the site and name you originally wrote it under. AP is a friendly interactive site for those who wish to write. It's fair to all users as long as you follow the site rules. You had already been banned once and and you had another ban that you
Failed to adhere to which caused your recent year long bann. Now you have family continuing your vendetta against the site and users on it. Shame on you and your family members, that have no intention of writing, just there to stir trouble.
When submitting a poem for critique, the system forces me to write lenghy reviews on a few poems which puts me off. If the poem is worthy, I will wax lyrical without encouuragement. Therefore, while I understand the conccept, I would rather simply be candid in all reviews, without being tied to a certain predetermined character count.
I've been a member of the site since June 2004. Yes, there have been some issues overtime, some dealing with upgrades, but if you submit a ticket properly, the moderators and/or the site owner fixes the problem. Yes, there are some "wannabes" and "bashers" on there who enjoy causing trouble and who have nothing to offer but drama. There are also a great many VERY talented people who are there to share their poetry and interact in a positive manner. I've found that in most situations, you get what you give. I've never been "ripped off", but I did have a problem with a stalker that just wouldn't behave himself in a decent manner and ultimately, he was banned. I'd say most of the negative remarks came from people who didn't venture beyond their own circle of friends. I have told a lot of people about the site over the years. If you are serious about improving your writing and enjoying the creations of many other talented people, this is still the best website for doing so. There's been a lot more emphasis lately on being a poetic community and a social site, but no one forces you to participate. I have a lengthy list of very good writers that I constantly refer new members to, as they are the people I read the most for my own inspiration. They are all REAL people with a lot to offer, but yes, just like every other site, there are a few bad apples. The site has an "ignore" feature that keeps troublemakers off of your pages. I met my husband through this site - although he is no longer active on AP, we both post on Blogspot and have other venues in which to share our creativity with others. As the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time - yet this site is not the big, bad wolf that some have insinuated with their remarks. If you are a negative person, you're guaranteed to have nothing but negative experiences no matter where you go.
Been on this site for almost ten years. We've yet to be offered a phoney anthology,
Prizes or a trip, convocation, in Disneyland like some wannabee literary sites offer
Members, preying upon the sensibilities of their members.
There have been serious problems at times, other times laughable.
Management has a queue of assistants who will address any problems that arise in a timely fashion.
SEE YOU AROUND THE INKWELL!
This is an excellent site! Been on Allpoetry for 11 years now. I love the new layout of it! Very easy to navigate and a lot more modern of a look now... which looks great!
For amateurs and wanna be's. Real writers don't join places like this.
Was quite shocked to see that one poet actually posted as his poem a song[common people]as his own work, and put on his profile a picture of Jimmy Saville, the well known child abuser in England, simply disgusting, when i complained, i got the answer that the poet had been contacted and the issue was resolved, not so the picture and the song are still on the site, any decent person will avoid this unsavory site.
It's funny how the owner and his family advertise AP as a blog dedicated to poetry from my recent experience is nothing more than a page for more gratuitous online adds. Badly kept and badly directed AP has nothing to do with poetry is just a scam against self deceiving amateurs and wannabe writers.
NEVER EVER JOIN THIS GROUP OF FRAUDS AND EVIL PEOPLE! CHRISTIANS BEWARE THEY PUT ON ACTS AND EVEN STEAL YOUR IDENITY AND YOU CANNOT TRUST THE OWNER EVER. THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY THEN SCREW YOU OVER AND WON'T REFUND IT ALSO THE FEDS ARE NOW LOOKING INTO THIS SIGHT. STAY AWAY NO ONE IS HONEST ON THIS SIGHT AND THEY WILL MESS WITH YOUR MIND AND YOUR POETRY. I HAVE BEEN THERE 2 YEARS TO LONG NO MORE I AM THROUGH WITH THIS SCAM SITE ESPECIALLY THE OWNER KEVIN WATT WHO RIPS YOU OFF YOUR MONEY READ THE CONTRACT CLOSELY IF YOU STILL WANT TO GO THERE BUT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
This site is excellent and the level of talent I have found here is very surprising. You can customize your poems and homepage. You can use different fonts and text styles. Admittedly a paying member gets more than a free member but I still enjoy this site greatly. I wasted my time on another site for a few days before I found all poetry but I will never go back to that first site again.
As a poet I love having free access to a site where I could post my work, it was copyrighted to my Name and I could get some people looking at it. I have over 200-250 poems less than half not even on the site. It was nice to have a place for them other than papers that would eventually get lost.
However, I hate the number of people leaving and how confusing the new update was. I know more people have had trouble with the site now than I have... But I hope things get better because it's still the only poetry site of it's kind out there.
Hi, this is Kevin, the site owner. This was awhile ago and we had a rough time during an upgrade. Things smoothed over though, and now the site is bigger and more active than ever.
Terrible site and a disgrace at times. One of the issues with this poetry site is harassment from those on the site. The complaints board has this complaint about this and I quote an excerpt of this:
Author: NotWhoYouThink
Topic: Harassment with no way to respond, paid service
Date: Posted: 2011-08-27
"How ever the harasment is overwheming, they make up something or take something out of context as they did me and run with it, day after day,... though I am a paying member and bought months in advance as most do, a gold membership... You can not get these people to stop or get off of you. They do this repeatedly to people. You can join on a free membership and go the pub forum and experience this personally, no you do not have to write poetry"
Another issue has to do with the site also ignoring complaints at times and technical difficulties.
This poetry site needs to have more than poetry on it and needs to have something else called principles when dealing with people.
This is Kevin, the site owner. If someone is harassing you, please use the "contact us" link in the bottom left and we'll respond promptly.
It's an amateur site and you get the general run-of-the-mill type of writing there. It's mostly a social site, though ironically the site owner recently made numerous changes which curbed many of the things that made the site interactive.
However, if all you want to do is post poorly written poetry and find a few like minded people who will read it and tell you they love it, then it's the place for you.
Its basic membership is free, so that's something,
The owner of the website recently did an upgrade that changed the site. Users lost a lot of things that were enjoyed on the old site and more and more bugs keep popping up with the new upgraded site. Many people have complained about the upgrade and have even threatened to leave. We have even contacted the owner of the site. He has chosen to ignore our complaints and it would seem that he doesn't really care how the majority of the site feels about the upgrade or what happens to the site. He also refuses to give any refunds to paying users who would like to leave prior to their full month of membership being up becuase of the upgrade. AllPoetry used to be a wonderful site that I recommenced to many people who wished to publish their literary works online and have fun in the process, but now I recommend staying away from the site and leaving the site if you already use it.

Answer: Over 400,000, with about 50,000 active in the last two weeks. A lot!
Answer: You award them to users who comment on your post. Or you can create contests and use points for prizes
Answer: If you visit a person's profile page and click message, then 'history' you can see deleted messages with that user.
Answer: There's an export link on list pages in the right column to do this...
Answer: Usually this means javascript is misconfigured or broken on your computer. Try resetting your security settings to the default, and make sure your browser has all the latest updates. Comments need to be made from the "now comment" page, vs. clicking titles to comment...
Answer: For the required two comments after commenting? They have to be done from the "now comment" page, maybe that was the problem. Or the javascript on your computer messed up for some reason... Hopefully you got it working :)

Looks like you left us 1 star but were complaining about a few poet's preferences?
We let people choose the "question" they'd like people to respond to on their poem - so people who want thorough reviews can get it, and those who just want encouragement can say so. Best of both worlds.
There's a lot of great "Groups" on the group tab for trading critiques if that's more your style. Or just put a detailed question in the field on your poem edit page.
