I have been almost 2 years 11 reviews. They have insight compares you with other pros, but when look at it some them not the ones you losing quotes too. Dont use their proassist i do believe it scam. You can message people you may get one out 10 to message back. 99.9 people don't event read your profile.
This is a great company for free clients (consumers) but terrible for business owners. They charge for very low quality leads and don't care about customer service. They've created a program that auto responds for clients and they charge businesses even if the client never actually reaches out.
I have been on thumbtack since 2009 and all I have ever gotten was bogus leads always kept fifty to a hundred credits on my account and when I cunfronted thumbtack about there service they deleted my profile and would not refund me for the credits I did have not to mention all the other businesses I had referred to them and this is how they treated a five star reputable company that has been with them for eight years and have waisted countless time and money beleaving that thumbtack was a fair lead company I was so wrong because after eight years I have still yet to receive one call from any customers needing our companies services so please do not waist your time and money like I did also I will be reaching out to more people on Google Facebook and where ever I can post to help future business owners not to be taken by thumbtack
I'm interior designer for 25 years. So I tried it. And I've sent 5 quotes with description: My services are free for you. Please call me or just reply! Free 3D modelling, free planning. Everything free!
So what you think...
No one reply. No one need any services. I've just spent 100$. I think government should punish the thumbtack founder. Someone call cops.
Thumbtack appears to be a tool for people to request quotes out of curiosity, with no real intention of hiring a contractor - (maybe it's kids just messing around.?).
I've been w/Thumbtack for almost 1yr and initially pursued leads and spent hundreds of dollars in the first couple of months, only to realize that 99% of these quotes -you would never get a reply back or anything! You are tied to Thumbtack's portal to try and follow up on your leads, which sucks, because you're paying for something that you get no direct way of contacting that lead and most the time the listed lead never has a phone #. There are plenty of other lead generation sites that will do this!
Thumbtack customers are not looking for true professionals, but at best - if it's a real lead, the cheapest price.
As a Thumbtack Pro - save your time & money and put your marketing dollars elsewhere.
I contacted Thumbtack after I was cheated by an unlicensed contractor who destroyed my tub and did a horrible job painting my kitchen cupboards. I contacted them and their response was, they ran a back ground check and it came up ok, so he stays on the site. I just learned that on all these kinds of sites, the workers pay to be on it and can pay to have bad reviews removed. Never use this site!
I have been a member of thumbtack for 2 weeks. I received 6 calls gave them a price quote nothing happen. For a week now I received no calls.no e-mails. I called the company and they claim is a slow time there has to be a better site that will give me more customers. Keep you money in your own wallet. And find some one else.
They didn't believe my real name was my real name and denied my request. I hired the performer I was looking for through Gigmasters.com and had also found a great selection on Gigsalad.com. I don't understand why this website even exists. It's definitely useful at all.
I received three names of contractors for concrete repairs. I contacted all three contractors and they set dates and times to come out to give an estimate. None of them ever showed up. I will never us this service again or the contractors they provided.
Mostly all of the Requests are Scams. I got into a argument with a off site client, which probably was a thumbtack employee posing as a Client. He argued my quote of 299 with a certificate of insurance in NYC for 2 men-2 hours was too much. He said he got the job done for $29. Really? This is the type of guy they let smear my company. The only jobs that are probably real are the ones it costs the most credits to bid on. Stay away from the Labor jobs, and junk removal Jobs. Anyone can smear your business if you don't let them bully you. You will be held hostage. Its ok, I will build a web site that will put thumbtack out of business.
This business is a total scam. Zero customer service. The requests for quotes are obviously bogus. One supposed quotee "mistakenly" hit that they hired me. I wrote them asking them to correct that... No response, and no way for a pro to correct this. Responses to several quotes were exactly the same, "We decided to go in another direction". Really? With no other questions?
This Company also locks you out of your account when you delete your credit card, and "try" to deactivate it. I get an "error" message, then thy locked me out.
SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM
I hired a cabinet maker based on their 'outstanding' ratings. He had a good story and a decent shop, but took my money and delivered nothing. Sent the cops and he got a month in jail. So much for Thumbtack 'outstanding' ratings!
I love how there isn't any place to review this stupid company.
Thumbtack is a total and complete rip off to professionals. Please do not sign up to be a professional on this site. You will lose more money than you make.
Here's what's wrong with this company:
First of all when a pro signs up with thumbtack they are told you get a refund if a customer doesn't look at your quote within 48 hours. The problem with that is the customer requests a quote from pros, the customer looks at them and never hire a professional. They never had the intention to hire a professional. Most of the customers are on Thumbtack just getting free quotes from professionals and never hire anyone. For all we know it could be someone that Thumbtack hires to sign up as a customer and look at pros quotes but never get back to them. That seems like a full proof way to get money from professionals.
Here are a couple things Thumbtack SHOULD do but won't because they are complete scammers:
1. Thumbtack should, at the very least, tell customers the professional is paying to quote them. I did a test run and signed up for Thumbtack as a customer looking for a quote and NO WHERE did it tell the me that the professional will be paying to send you a quote. (I didn't view the quotes sent me to me because I'm not that kind of person). Therefore, all of the customers that sign up with thumbtack have NO IDEA we are putting money out there. At least let them know before sending us a request so if they have some morals they can hold off on requesting a quote until they are truly ready to hire someone.
2. If the customer is actually SERIOUS and ready to hire a pro, they should put some of their money into their request. That will tell the pros that the customer is actually serious if they are willing to pay for a quote. Then, when they actually hire a pro off Thumbtack they will get their money back.
3. THUMBTACK should be the one to follow up with the customer. I'm sure Thumbtack has data that tells them which customer hired someone and which customer is leaving pros in the dust. If Thumbtack contacted the customer, pros can find out why the customer did not hire any of the pros that quoted them or maybe help them make the right decision.
4. Thumbtack should refund a pro's money even if the customer looks at the quote and never answers within 48 hours. Thumbtack should refund a pro's money if the customer hires someone other than themselves. That way the refunded money can be used for another quote in the future. It all sounds like Thumbtack doesn't actually want to help out professionals, but to take everyone's money.
Please change the unfair ways toward professionals and maybe more professionals will sign up for Thumbtack or maybe you will get less reviews like this one.
I have been with Thumbtack for a few years, I have only gotten ONE job from the site and now they have changed the way you send quotes. Instead of buying "CREDITS" which was expensive in the first place, now you have to use money. I just received an email and to send ONE quote it would cost me $33.60. That's just to SEND the quote. There is no vetting process for people looking for services, most of them are just "FISHING" for a price range, then cancel their request and the business is out the cost of the quote. The only way to make this work better is to have the ones looking for a service to pay as well, that would end a lot of the "FISHING" requests. I am done with them.
I have used them for a number of years... worked great until earlier this year. They made a bunch of changes, and cost of acquisition has more than quadrupled. They make MAJOR Changes every 3 or 4 months and just when you have figured out how to maybe make it work, they change everything again... We have moved on from them, I would suggest finding a different lead company so that the work you put into it is not in vain. Great idea for a lead company, abysmal management.
Do not trust thumbtack. You have no idea what you are getting. There is no vetting of repairmen and their promises are worthless.
Decided to use Thumbtack to help find a licensed contractor to complete my home project. I trusted the site to put me in contact with reputable contractors. The site list a guarantee for up to 1 million so I felt more at ease going through their network. The pro I hired from them came out and did a terrible job. He did not follow his guides on anything. The type of wood, the paint, the pattern, or even the height. We gave him the proper instructions and he followed none. He also used material that cracked and warped and didn't even finish an entire portion of the project. After we asked him to correct he left and never came back or returned our calls. We went to the BBB and found out he isn't even licensed. So we reached out to thumbtack because they guarantee the individual is properly licensed and they told us sorry but this has nothing to do with us and good luck trying to get your money back on your own. Now we have to pay to to have the fence taken down and then rebuilt again costing us double after we already paid the thumbtack general contractor. So if you are thinking of using this website DO NOT. They do not run checks, they do not guarantee their referrals, and they do not care about you as a customer.
I am a Cleaning company. The 1st 10 site points were free. I got. A job or two, they took my credits. I was encouraged, so I bought credits to bod jobs. Everything changes as soon as they got actual $ from me for bidding credits. I would bid a "lead " and get NO response, and they would take my $, contrary to thier contract " rules" They just take money and post phony leads.
THE LEADS ARE FAKE! PHONY LEADS. I had a friend post on there as a customer and her ad was never posted TOTAL SCAM, PHONY LEADS! See u in Hell, Thumbtack!
Bad bot. Use people recommended by friends and neighbors. This is a scam. Once I replied, I couldn't't get rid of them, even though I unsubscribed twice.
Hired a roofer from hell from thumbtack. Damage to my home and ceilings. There was nothing they could do to help me. I'm going to have to sue the contractor and in the mean time pay for a whole other roof and repair to my home. They do not properly screen who they advertise and cannot help you when it turns out to be a nightmare!
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
