A very supportive site for yarn, but unless you are socialist and far, far left, do not dare express anything on political or religious grounds. NOTHING! Must be extremely careful with anything posted! Anything!
Used to be a wonderful site - still one of the best for knit/crochet patterns, but THAT IS ALL!
The freedom to speak your own mind, this is possible outside of Ravelry. Within Ravelry, however, it isn't. Just as I prefer to spend time with those who have diverse opinions and perspectives, I prefer an online knitting community with similar values. That isn't Ravelry where only one view is permitted. No matter how many patterns they offer, the cost is too high.
This site is supposedly pro-creativity, but if you design anything political that the site owners don't agree with, you'll get your patterns removed at best and banned from the site at worst. Every kind of political "craftivism" is A-OK with the owners as long as they agree with it. I quit the site on 7/15/19 and haven't been happier. May their yarn always be tangled and knotty.
I was with Ravelry since 2008, loved it. No more, so much vitriol, shoving their political opinions in your face, self righteous indignation, politics, politics, politics... I have great sources to get politics and news from. What does it matter what everyone thinks, can't we just enjoy the beauty of fiber arts and be creative together and leave people to form their own opinions? Besides, lovecrafts ACTUALLY does something to better the world, love their fundraising and compassionate outreach to communities in need around the world, take that ravelry.
Ravelry is a great knitting site. It has thousands of patterns in many different languages. People all over the world use it because it is an extraordinary site. I've learn so much using this site. The cowl in the picture is from a pattern in Ravelry.
Ravelry has turned into a bullying fascist site and is not longer safe for everyone. It's only safe if you think exactly like the bullies. Sad that they think they are the moral Gods...
Used to be a busy and active site. Membership is way down, as a member who has opted to pay for additional optional features for well over a decade, I've enjoyed the site in the past, but I'm afraid I'm now witnessing it's death. I used to log in and see 10s of thousands of members online at any given time. That is no longer the case. Now during peak hours, middle of the day US central time to early evening, fewer than 2000 members online.
The lively, friendly groups are gone. Some that remain simply don't have any activity. I'm not talking about groups that are objectionable. Groups about popular tv shows, or about foodies, or about yarn sales. They are just dead. Many of the patterns I'd saved over the years have disappeared, dare I say hundreds simply *poof* gone. Saved projects, groups, posts, just gone.
I had hoped these things were temporary (I've enjoyed the site in the past, and I personally have invested thousands of hours and a substantial amount of money toward the site) but it just keeps getting worse. I think it's time to start downloading and cataloguing all of my things onto my personal servers and databases, because I am afraid it just may not be there one day.
Ravelry used to be a welcoming, inclusive place that always had a kind word and a beautiful design to knit or crochet. Not anymore. It is now full of hate and is no longer a nice place to be. It has become a place to use foul language and spew politics. I just want to knit or crochet something to relax, not read a preachy sermon from the site owners and their "fans" on how I should think.
I don't like discrimination, if which this site is very guilty. They also give underhanded statistics and support cyberstalking and doxxing.
I did a little digging and find that less than 650,000 of their purported 8 million users have avatars. Furthermore... if you look at the new users as far back as I could go, they are all just a name. No avatar, no favorites, no projects. In short. Not people using the site. Lastly, my friend list has been cut in half and, of those left, every page has multiple users with no profile pic which tells me they no longer use the site due to the hatred and prejudice they have encountered. And... for the record... I have been a member of Ravelry since long before they hit 500,000 users. So very sad to watch the demise of this community but hatred and prejudice never win...
It used to be a good website. Designers are going elsewhere now. Lots of vandalism of the website and problems with hackers. I wouldn't recommend it.
I used to love this website. Now it's just full of hate. It ruined a fun hobby. There is a lot of vulgar language on the website. They attack people just for using acrylic yarn.
Don't use Ravelry unless you want to risk having your personal information compromised. I've had terrible experiences with this website. It's not worth the risk.
Not a website for knitters anymore. It's a place to complain about Trump, revel in hate speech against various religious groups and virtue signal to your heart's content. The underlying bigotry and sexism is cringy. Users are strongly encouraged to report wrong-think to the admins.
Ravelry might appeal to people who believe that minorities need rich white folks to fix the world for them by turning it into a gulag, Should be sponsored by Antifa.
I fell in love with this little magical place on the internet known as Ravelry long before they hit their first million Ravelers. It's always been an amazing community that stands behind the goodness in humanity and I'm happy to be a part of it!
Ravelry is the place. Want a patten for a specific yarn, color, yardage? This is the place. Independent designers galore. Groups, forums and organizational tools.
These are the people who have shunned all Trump supporters and called them white supremacists without facts. Please observe the group-think mentality of this cult-like behavior and make a decision based on facts, tolerance and acceptance. They are the opposite of what they claim to be. They are now the bullies of the knitting community. Have a wrong thought and be shunned. Not very freedom-loving or accepting.
Experience true peace, freedom and friendship when you leave the hateful cult of Ravelry.
A place to buy patterns or download free ones. A place to keep track of your yarn stash. A place to keep track of your projects. Forums for just about every topic under the sun. Helpful, responsible site owners and employees. Diversity friendly. Conscious of keeping the site safe for everyone.
Answer: Ravelry refuses to support bigotry in any form and states so in its TOS. It is a privately owned platform and they are well within their rights. They have absolutely not banned Christians or conservatives, only speech that supports bigots and bigotry.
Answer: Because they are creating a culture of ignorance and hate in the name of politics.
Answer: This has nothing to do with Ravelry. Sockmatician is receiving feedback on a post he wrote and then heavily edited.
Answer: In the notebook section, go to your library. Choose your pattern and there will be a download button. Alternatively, for free patterns, on the main pattern page there will be a link to click to download the pattern or, if it isn't hosted on Ravelry, a link to where you can find the pattern on another website.
Answer: Can you point to any reviews that are actually doing that?
Answer: By email / by downloading it - If you purchase a pattern on Ravelry, it is a digital download.
Answer: How interesting that I answered this question several hours ago, but now *POOF* my answer has magically disappeared. WHICH PROVES MY ASSERTION. This site is helping Ravelry suppress opposing points of view. What that means is, this site is not objective and cannot be trusted for accurate information concerning the businesses that are reviewed.
Answer: I would imagine that it has something to do with Ravelry insisting that their ignorant behavior be defended. Even if that means many will no longer take sitejabber reviews seriously. I mean, how could I? Sitejabber is now guilty of silencing dissenting opinions. Just like Ravelry.
Answer: Laura J., the negative reviews are also objective. They have been posted by real people such as me, reporting real experiences past and present. True assessment of a company needs both sides of the story. If the negative reviews disappear again, it would imply someone from Ravelry is exerting undue influence over SiteJabber. There was mention in an answer to a similar question about some people a "Boycott Ravelry" group using fake names and addresses to post fake reviews. I was not a member of that group, and know some of the people posting reviews since the initial ones were deleted. We are not fake. We speak the truth, whether you want to hear it or not.
