They charged my credit card for the highest service after giving me the year free last year and then said their policy is to never refund, without any chance to discuss. I notified them 10 minutes after I noticed my charge
These people sure charge enough to use their service, but where are they when their service doesn't work properly? There is no way to contact a real person, just robot answers to questions.
One star is too much credit for this service.
I originally started a group on Meetup for a community service organization (Lions Club). I am the current president and thought it would be a good outreach vehicle. After a year, it did not generate enough interest, so I decided to cancel the group and my membership.
In the meantime, Meetup electronically transferred money from my debit card before submitting the renewal bill to me for approval. I've tried to cancel and dismantle the group I started as well as my personal account. I followed instructions on their site and asked for a refund. I emailed for verification. The return email was a "special offer" for a 30% discount. There is no help-line telephone number. The e-mail address took a lot of searching to find. Processing according to their instructions is not much more than a loop that frustrated me so much I am not sure if the request went through or not.
The best I could do so far is issue a stop-payment with my debit card company for any future charges Meetup might submit.
DO NOT USE MEETUP!
Horrible horrible, no service support whatsoever, basic service not even done
Ceo should be embarrassed with such a poor product that it has become, please some new tech person make a better app to use!
Recently meetup introduced event topic tags. When setting up events, you need to pick 1-5 topics that relate to your event.
The PROBLEM is they auto populate with 5 random tags that have nothing to do with your event. You have to manually delete 5 tags one by for each event or delete then manually add again the right tags.
BIGGER PROBLEM - They also automatically added tags to existing events that again are auto populated and have nothing to do with your actually events. Example: English lessons showing German Tags or Hiking etc. you need to go into each and every events and delete one by one each tag then add the correct ones.
NIGHTMARE WEBSITE... This is just one of many problems. The repeat feature on events is also broken, Not Working.
I joined in as an organizer in 2008. I loved the group but then they insisted on collecting the dues. They kicked me out when I didn't pay the dues of O dollars but held me liable and kept deducting the 6 month dues from my Credit Card. No way to contact them. The phone number in NY doesn't work. My American Express sided with them rather than me. Stay away!
Some MeetUp groups are ok IF YOU TRUST THE PEOPLE IN THE GROUP(S). Also, I find that groups are safe if they meet at a public venue. But, the downside is that there are some groups that meet at their homes and are focused on sex -- not just TALKING about that either, but DOING it. Some of those sex groups even allow underage children to join. I even saw things with my very own eyes. I was very disgusted. MeetUp as a whole is awful, but like I said, it is better to meet in public places, and NOT at peoples' homes! That can get dangerous. You don't know what they're really after. Are they trying to rob you? Are they trying to kill you? Do they want to have sex with your children? You don't know! If I could, I would give Meetup.com ZERO stars!
I was in contact with a woman on MeetUp and a couple of days later, she ghosted me! I never thought that MeetUp had scammers, but I was dead wrong. THE SITE IS NOT RECOMMENDED! I felt very confident in using the site at first, but then, I got really disheartened.
The website itself is a SCAM, as well. People have to pay a lot of money(let's say, $90) just for singles to meet up, get to know each other and have fun, and even then, the organizers don't even show up. It's too expensive for very little outcome!
Don't have anything to do with these thieves. These people are nothing but low life crooks. First their customer service sucks. Next they drag you through the ringer asking for more an more money all the while promising they will return your money once you have been vented. After working with them over a week to get the code, they informed me they needed another $500 to expedite releasing me code and I needed to purchase an additional $480 in green dot cards. That was the final straw. I informed them i was no longer interested in pursuing getting a meetup-code and that I wanted my money back. I haven't heard a thing from them in days, email after email. They don't even acknowledge my emails. In addition the lady I was trying to meetup with (from the Ashley Madison site) immediately stop texting me. Don't fall into the same trap as I did. These people are crooks and I was a naïve idiot to trust them. I can provide proof of this ordeal through 100's of text messages with the lady and over 40 emails with the "*******@meetup-code.com if requested
When you're a transplant and often in some states many people are and if you don't have children it's difficult to meet people, I've been doing it a little over a year and met many people but 3 people that I can call outside of meetup and do things with it's a great way to meet people often hit or miss but never had a bad experience
I've been to both very good and very bad meetups, but haven't found a way to rate them. Especially when there's a fee one would expect it to contain at least the things mentioned in the description.
Beware extroverts who've lived in the UK for a long time (or are from the UK) with no friends! Plenty of them on meetup, once you befriend them you will understand their toxic personality is the root cause.
Yep many male organizers who are only interested in talking to the attractive women. One even set up a women's group where's the organizer... dodgy AF.
Lots of desperate men and women looking for a relationship. Many bad tempered and socially inept hosts.
I'm honestly just trying to make some normal friends.
If you do enough you will probably meet some normal people.
I would not join or ever pay for a group on this site.
You can't share your opinion without censorship and removal.
How they determine what is SPAM is ridiculous. AI engine needs to be retrained. Stupid sh*t. Impossible to get "community service" to reactivate an account that was deactivated by the dumb spam filter.
I've been using it for over 5 years. I've never been scammed or setup. Its a good to use site to find like minded people or support.
One problem is on the site, it does not display the year of events so it's hard to tell if the event is recent or not.
Zoom business info/entrepreneurship classes are truly excellent, taught by various experts each week. 100% Free, last an hour, with a presentation and a Q&A. Ability to network at the same time with those around the US & other countries as well.
Yoga/meditation classes via Zoom are sometimes 100% free and other times bait & switch $$$. Free ones thru Dignity Health are outstanding with a top certified instructor.
Meetup org does NOT get involved when there Organizers try to scam members in any way. Some Meetups are presented as social groups or info classes and in reality are attached to high pressure MLM or cults. Beware.
Meetup org also won't get involved if there's any illegal activity. Only tell you to call your local LE. Sad as this ruins Meetup overall rep. Meetup groups have even been banned from venues for wrongful actions.
Surprise, surprise, but this is just an extension of the same clique bull$#*! you thought you left behind in highschool. Only an idiot would subject themself to this level of childish disrespect. You deserve better than this crap.
They didn't have permission to charge my card again but they did. Also they doubled the price for the second month. I shouldn't even have had to cancel since I only signed up for ONE month. I disputed the charge through my bank but no luck. They won't give. There's info on the net about what it takes to get autopayments legitimately and Meetup doesn't meet the legal requirements. Will all the complaints they have it won't be long before there's a class action lawsuit which I'm certainly willing to get started. Seems since it's a relatively small amount, they figure none of us will really go after them. But I will. I'm one of those annoying people who's into the principle of the matter.
Meetup groups are for social misfits, people who just don't fit in and who can't communicate. I have met many people at Meetup events, both men and women, who needed to take an anger management class. If you're looking to expand your social circle, avoid Meetup at all costs. Meetup sucks.
I'm reading a lot of negative reviews, especially from organizers. It makes sense since many online businesses won't let you cancel or close the account. They want to keep charging $$$ against your will.
I researched online "how to report an online business" and I found "10 Effective Ways to Complain About a Company Online". Some may not be effective, others may:

2. Contact the Better Business Bureau
3. Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
4. Check out the Ripoff Report
5. Email *******@uce.gov
6. Try Yelp
7. Post on Planet Feedback

Hi, S
I have been an organizer of several SUCCESSFUL singles and hiking groups for a decade. Through the years, Meetup has "changed hands" and the new administration has made decisions that were financially favorable to them but not favorable to the organizers that pay their salary.
Today, April 10th, 2021, I was trying to create an event for my group and I was unable to to do so because I was getting the wheel thingy AFTER spending more that an hour researching and creating the hike.
Our house IS wired with fast internet because my husband's company pays for fast Internet due to his job.
I am a high school teacher teaching online from home and NEVER had an internet isssue... WHICH means that MEETUP.COM sucks and is taking our money but not delivering good service
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - DELIVER OR WE ARE OUT
WE CAN CREATE OUR OWN GROUPS IN FACEBOOK OR PRIVETELY
FIX THE ISSUES!
Answer: All Meetup has now is a database of names and a reasonably efficient way of routing new members to your group. But the tools for organizers are wretched and, by design, have gotten worse. This is the only company I've ever seen that doesn't care what the application users, in particular the organizers, want and need. The list of bad changes is very long--and they don't give a damn. And to add insult to injury, they are inept at application development and coding. They pushed out what might be laughably called alpha code and then scrambled to fix issues, saying "it was a work in progress." A major software release should not be a work in progress. Without comment, they remove functionality. For instance, when asked why they removed the ability to post a note on the calendar, their answer was that "only 3% use the feature. So what--now only 3% are pissed? Leaving the feature cost them nothing. I evaluated software from Microsoft and others for a living. Meetup by far is the worst I have ever seen. The "show runners" should be fired and given bad recommendations. And when a competitor comes along that is competent and cares about its users, Meetup will disappear and we'll all celebrate. The organizers en masse don't just dislike the app, they dislike the folks responsible for the mess that Meetup has created.
