I attempted to cancel one of my reservations but Hostel world is very good at ignoring you and not returning emails. Interestingly, they do not have a phone number contact, apparently because this further allows them to ignore your concerns and steal your money. I tried to cancel a reservation several days in advance. What made it difficult to cancel was they never sent me a confirmation email of my purchase. A corrupt organization!

If you want to rent a room or hostel go directly to the hotel or hostel. The music city hotel gave me a refund and hostel world refuses to issue my refund. They pretty much kept my money fir no reason. They are thieves! If I would've went to music city hotel directly they would've given me my money back for a room I never stayed in. Boycott hostel world! Be safe guys
My ref************** be aware of this site, they will book a nice hostel but in reality they will send you different place a hostel which I never did the booking there. The costumer service it is the worst if you write an email they will reply after two weeks. They might offer promotions but there are fake, this is my first and last, it is a scammer by the name DO NOT BOOK ON THIS SITE.
I made a reservation less than 24 hours before my expected arrival, and immediately canceled it. They refused to refund my deposit because it was less than 24 hours prior to arrival. This is a completely unreasonable policy.
I made a reservation, made a partial payment and they never sent me a booking confirmation email. They have my money and they dont respond to my emails.
I made a solo trip to Florida and the hostel I had booked through hostelworld left me stranded at 130am without a place to stay. Both the hostel and hostelworld were completely unsympathetic about if.
Hostel World gave me a voucher credit rather than cash return in 2019. This was because our reservations were canceled by pandemic travel restrictions. We were not told we would not be able to use the total amount on future bookings. Rather we can use the voucher for the 15% deposit only. Leaving a balance of 703 Euros that I cannot use and I must pay $1,090.00 US dollars to cover the costs of my hostels and cannot use the voucher credit.
This is unacceptable and deceptive by Hostel World. They knew I would not be able to redeem my total amount but lead me to believe I could pay for my hostels in total.
Hostel World responded with apologies, but this is their business practice. And they kept my money now too.

The reviews on their site are not realistic. Some hostels are receiving 10 or 9.5 of 10 on their site while they are too old and dirty, cannot get more 5 of 10 at most.
They never refund the deposit in case of a problem even if it is their responsibility.

I created a booking, and I canceled immediately (within 10 mins). They did not pay any money to the hostel, but they would not return my deposit to me either because it was non-cancelable. I understand that it was my fault, but I lost $280, and they would not consider even letting me use it for some other booking. I am just disappointed by their policy. I would rather use Expedia or some other site to book who makes it extremely clear while booking, using red markers and warnings that the deposit would not be returned.
We made a booking to stay at Gram's Place in Tampa on Hostelworld, but when we showed up the evening of our reservation, we were told that there were no available rooms for us. We received no help at all in trying to find an alternate place to stay. We had no choice but to drive 4+ hours back home that same night. I would strongly caution anyone against booking through Hostelworld or attempting to stay at this location.
They r sucks. Website said have best price guarantee. That's meant if u found out other place is cheaper than them on same type of room and date, can claim the difference within 24 hours from u made the booking from them. I met all the conditions they wrote on the website but they tried to use different types of ridiculous reason to cancel your claim. For example, they said they checked the room that i booked was unavailable, the available one is not the same type of room i book. But i check it so many times even I screenshot to them. They said screenshot is invalid. And said "you are choosing a "SHARED" room. Which is cheaper than a DELUXE 4 Bed Female dorm Ensuite when you choose a shared room this mean that the group can be sent in different dormitory, there's no guarantee that the hostel put you in the same dorm." That's totally bull$#*!, they are actually the same room just different name between different website. So many things that u guys can read on my screenshots that i just uploaded.
Hostelworld is the primary website I use to find places to stay around the world while I am traveling. The customer service is very helpful.
I booked a room in Dubai for the New Year's Holiday. I booked months in advance. I even called the hostel in Dubai to confirm my reservation. Upon arrival I was told that the hostel was overbooked and that I needed to find accommodations elsewhere. Imagine my dismay after flying more than 7000 miles to discover I had nowhere to stay. This is totally unacceptable. When I arrived home I wrote to Hostelworld. They sent me a voucher for my deposit (Unacceptable).
One of the worst experience that you can have with booking website.
I have booked my accomodation in Granada for two nights and paid for my booking. However, I did not receive the booking confirmation. I have sent an email to both hostel and hostelworld. Hostel has replied very fast and said that I need to contact with hostelworld since they are the agency.
However, hostelworld did not solve my problem and left me without an accomodation in Granada. I had to book my stay with other website and I am still trying to get my money back from hostelworld. It has been 3 days and I had no luck yet. They basically don't reply their e-mails. DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE. It can be cheaper than others but customer service is way important than cheapest price.
My hostel didn't accept My booking. I contacted hostel world, and they replied a week later! A month later, I still haven't gotten a final solution. Very disappointing.
I didn't realize I booked a flop house. No sheets. Homeless people that smelled like pee and smoke in the bathroom and used the sink as an ashtray. Hard to sleep with the screaming. Customer service is a joke.
Booked through hostelworld with a free cancellion. I paid Hostelworld's deposit of $US20.56, however whilst hostelworld promised to refund the deposit, it continues with its duckshoving, excuses, delay, delay, more excuses, but never any action to refund my deposit. This has continued for 18 months, still delay after delay. WARNING. - DO NOT BOOK THROUGH HOSTELWORLD, it will not fulfil its promises.
Update 7 December 2021 - guess what, they've now just deposited the refund to my bank account, it only took 18 months. But still use caution if you book through Hostelworld.
DONT USE THEM! THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY, THEY PROVIDE 0 CUSTUMER SUPPORT!
I am cancelling the non-refund booking only because the Austrian government has blocked the country to tourists, but they still refuse to refund, even the hotel accept and understanding will not charge for anything!
