WHY DO SCHOOLS HAVE TO USE THIS STUPID COMMONLIT CRAP?! REALLY?!
None of the commonlit stories and questions make sense. The questions are the most ridiculous questions someone could possibly ask. Like here is one of the questions..."How does Nicholas Gray respond to human's treatment of animals?" Like who the heck is going to know something like that? What does it matter about how the freaking author responds to human treatment of the animals?! IT DOESNT MATTER. SERIOUSLY. I wish the schools would pick something else to teach kids about besides commonlit. To the creator of commonlit... This is the worst app you could create!
If you get the first question wrong then you are sure to get the rest of them wrong since commonlit bases the other questions on your answer to the 1st question. Not very well thought out. Plus the questions are vague.
My school chose to use another program from an acclaimed English program, and I tried to utilize it for a while. Unfortunately, it was extremely unfriendly to teacher and students, and my kids learned nothing after a few units. When I heard that CommonLit was a potential, free curriculum, I figured I had nothing to lose.
I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND IT!
The lessons are easy to follow, engaging, and accessible for kids. There are a lot of worksheets (I chose to complete everything by hand, but there IS an online option available... maybe that's what the negative reviews are referring to?) BUT my kids have appreciated the concrete instructions and the routine of reading a text (sometimes multiple times for different purposes,) analyzing it for specific traits, and writing responses. The variety of texts is awesome, as the kids will read nonfiction texts, stories, poems, reviews, etc. all in the same units. Each unit is built around a theme, so the kids are learning skills but also connecting the theme to their lives. Their writing and reading skills have already improved exponentially! I cannot recommend it enough.
You literally get a D for getting one question wrong? This is even more frustrating than ixl! This Commonlit is what made me get annoyed with reading. Thanks to constantly failing due to its horrible "get one wrong and you fail" system, I started thinking of myself as a very dumb kid. I thought I was stupid just because I missed a problem that I couldn't understand. I got an A on reading in my first trimester(thanks to actual reading websites)but do you know what I got in the website average? A 60.84, or D-. This website just gives you a complete fear or mistakes, which is NOT how were supposed to teach our kids.
The teachers like it but me and my friends hate it! It's not teaching u to get it right but forcing u not to get wrong. One wrong can get u a bad score, and unlike ixl, it doesn't explain what you get wrong. Also if u have two accounts(1 school and 1 personal), if u sign in with the wrong one, it won't let you try again with google. Sure it's free but take my advice.
