American Express has faced significant criticism regarding its customer service and the reliability of its rewards program. Many customers express disappointment with unfulfilled promises related to benefits and rewards, alongside complaints about poor communication and unhelpful support representatives. Issues such as deceptive billing practices and unresolved disputes further exacerbate customer dissatisfaction. Despite a long history of customer loyalty, recent experiences suggest a decline in service quality, prompting many to seek alternatives. Overall, while the brand has a legacy of prestige, current feedback indicates a pressing need for improvement in customer relations and service transparency.

I disputed a charge for a yearly subscription for a software that was not working. I was encouraged to ask for the entire amount instead of 9 months as I wanted to do. I spent a lot of time with their customer service representative providing all the details. I asked if I should submit documentation proving the sub par software I subscribed, she told me they'll reach out if needed. After a month, I received communication that the vendor has provided the contract I subscribed for a year and I have to pay for the entire year. Period. Never a mention about the software nit working, and about my small business having to shoulder $709.60 for a service that doesn't work. I'm usually a Citi and PayPal user. This time I thought I'd be better protected by American Express. Wow! Have a learned my lesson in an expensive way! Going back to Citi and PayPal!
We got an American Express card to use for our small business. We buy a lot on Amazon and the 3% rewards on Amazon purchases was a nice deal. We come to find out that we can only redeem our rewards once the monthly bill is paid or when the minimum payment is made. I don't like to make minimum payments for my bookkeeping- it's easier to pay the bill when it is due or a day or two before the due date. Not one of our other credit cards does this- we can always redeem rewards as soon as the statement period ends. Now, after paying my monthly bill in full, it seems like I cannot even redeem the points I have- they have some kind of minimum point value before we redeem. Of course, this was probably in the teeny tiny print somewhere. I went on the chat to get some help and of course, that person cannot help me but gave me a phone number to call. I'm pretty sure that when I call it I'll be put on hold forever. American Express SUCKS and I'm sorry we got the card.
American Express used to value their customers but not sure what happened but recently they don't. Have been a loyal customer for 14 years only to be rewarded with a lower approval limit makes no sense
I have been a card member for 2 years with a perfect history. Recently had them heavily restrict my account and punish me unnecessarily. With their account review process they improperly calculated income and then refused to look at actual income. Have effectively damaged my credit in the process. I was wrong to believe that AMEX was a higher caliber credit card company. Will happily be switching to Discover Black card.
I am disappointed with everything dealing with American Express. I was recently told I needed to utilize my card or it would be closed out. I guess I used it too aggressively because I am being threatened with my account being closed or pay $1110.00 for the first payment. I only have about a $4000.00 balance. I have a card that is $******* and a card that's $*******. I pay my bills and other than that I don't see why it was necessary to run my credit (hard/soft) hit over a funky $4000.00. We are doing upgrades and preparing for vacation. But thank you Amex, I realized in this whole ordeal my interest rate with you is the highest sooooo, you've made the decision for me. I shredded the card and will be paying it off to never use again. By the time you close out my account in the future my 780 credit score will be restored. I also purchased 3 Acura's in the past 2.5 years totaling approximately $200,000. So there are many factors as to why my score recently dropped and none are because my payment history. Goodbye and good riddance!
Spent $699 for AMEX Platinum card that gave me nothing back but grief. Was supposed to get 60,000 welcome points after spending $6k, spent $6.5k did not get them. Concierge is a joke. Could not use at airport lounges in Canada except for Toronto. Hotel and car discounts are non-existent. After complaining they gave me fake claim # and never resolved or called me back about the bonus miles. Made 1 late pymt and they deducted a month of points and if you want them back you have to pay for them. It took 4 follow-ups, I finally decided to cancel the card. They refused to reimburse the $699 that I got 0 benefit out of, and actually took all the points I had earned away. A very expensive lesson for me, I strongly encourage everyone not to waste their money on this card. What a horrible way to treat hard work Canadians!
After nearly 15 years with having an Amex card, I discovered on my statement this month, that my interest rate had risen to 28.75% and that they had allowed my card to exceed its limit by nearly $2000! The purchases via PayPal were meant to have been charged to my bank account. For some reason they were charged to Amex. The customer service rep gave my some song and dance about how they could not adjust the interest rate (it started at 5.99% when I opened it) even though for years it had been low and I have an excellent history with them -they actually had the cheek to thank me for being such a wonderful customer and that I was very valued because I've been with them for a very long time! So valued that when I asked for some clarity on why my card was able to exceed the limit by so much and why my interest rate had skyrocketed (something which began in 2021) they suggested a payment plan which I would have to call back in 48 hours to access! I cancelled my card and told them to come and collect. They are the very scourge of the earth as far as I'm concerned. Any balance I have on this card has been paid a hundred times over with the interest rates they've started charging. They have never had a problem with me being late to pay but this is how I'm being treated. As far as I'm concerned, my credit rating is wrecked because of them so I've got nothing to lose. They can pay a collection agent more money than I owe to come and get the balance owing. Oh ya and on top of that they wanted me to update them with my current job and income hahahahaha! Nice try Amex. Never again! You have lost yet another customer for life- not that I mattered to them in the first place.
After years of indifferent experience, neither great nor poor, I have recently had two very bad experiences with the 'rewards' offered by American Express.
Firstly they offered me 200,000 points if I took out a new kind of Platinum card, for which I paid a fee of £595. Fast forward three months, I have never had the points and every time I call them about it they claim they can't give me the points because at some point in the past I had a similar rewards card (not the one I have been using for years, that's a different type of card). Thing is: I didn't have a similar rewards card. Not ever. Turns out they made an error. They have even admitted that no card was sent to me, no spend occurred on the card and no transaction was ever raised (because there was no card). Despite this having been explained to them, they always agree that I am right, then refer it to someone else and then nothing happens. I then have to call in again, repeat the whole story and the saga repeats ad infinitum.
The second experience was when I saw an offer: "Spend £300 at Melia.com Hotels and get £75 cash back". I added the offer to my card as ten days later I was going to a Melia hotel. I duly paid £370 on my Amex but never received the cash back. I have fought this several times but have just today been told that they have definitively closed the case and I am not getting the cash back as promised because they feel the Melia I went to wasn't part of the offer, which absolutely didn't stipulate that only hotels were included, it merely said: Spend £300 at Melia.com to receive £75 cash back" - I still have a snapshot of the offer so I know this for certain. Their duplicity is really shocking.
I have honestly been an Amex member since 2004 (yes, 2004) and to have been wrongfully and egregiously denied two very simple offers that I unequivocally deserved on the basis of the text surrounding those offers, is just grotesque.

I just opened a gift card I got for Christmas. Tried to use it and it was declined. I called as I just opened the package and the card was used in October. How is it possible that I just got the card and it was already used in October. Fraud! And American Express doesn't card ir check into fraud. Don't buy it use Mastercard or visa gift cards.
I have been scammed by Primesanatrue.
• They have charged me $360 for a purchase of 39.95.
• Unable to see their "special" again on the web.
• They did not send invoice, nor showing it anywhere
• Not included with Packing slip either.
• There is no web page for Primesanatrue, and the original advertisement is no longer there.
• Called their number, as showed on Retail transaction, does not excist.
• Sent email, no reply
• Many other people had been scammed by this company
I have already spoke to an American Express representative and told me to send all the information gathered. I have sent three times this information and the three times it was declined. The Customer service agent told me it was my problem.
In fact, they made no effort to check the authenticity and legality of this company.
I have returned their card after 20 years of having been a loyal customer.
I only hope that clients are aware of American Express "Not doing anything for their customers"
I had an Amex card for my business and I was happy to use it for buying supplies and balancing the amount the following month. This worked well as my clients paid my invoice and in turn I cleared the Amex balance. Then 2 issues happened: 1, I raised a charge back request in October 2022, which was acknowledged in writing and then I had a letter a week later saying it was closed stating I had not responded. I had. 2, In November 2022 I had a client inform me that due to Christmas payment runs differing from the rest of the year, they were delaying my invoice by a week. No problem I thought, just call Amex and arrange a one off exception to pay 1 week later, considering I had never missed a payment or paid late, this should be fine? Wrong. Amex immediately classified my account as a risk, and blocked my card and it never worked again. I called them multiple times to ask why, and they said the card would be unblocked, it wasn't. I cleared the December payment exactly when I promised to, but the account remained blocked. Multiple calls later, they kept promising to unblock the card, but never did. Eventually, I called to make a complaint, which wasn't taken seriously, nobody gave me a reference number or acknowledged anything formally. I called again, about the 6th time, to say "Either acknowledge these issues, fix my card and apologise, or close my account". This was recorded on the Amex system as "customer wants to close the account". That wasn't what I said, but Amex only believe their own records. Do not bother calling and trying to reason with them, they just write whatever they feel like in their system and usually it tries to make you out as the bad guy.
I am now in dispute with them, and they want to close my account and demand full payment of all funds outstanding and are threatening me with a negative credit rating, for a debt less than 60 days old. They have never acknowledged any error on their part, its all my fault apparently. Be very sure that Amex will not do anything to assist if you run into issues
I am just wondering. Is American Express slowly fazing out. The last several years I've noticed American Express vanishing. Very little to no advertisements. Year's ago, you used to see them at Pearson Airport selling. Now it seems Master card is explosive on the market.
NOT worth the fee, you're basically paying for the bonus miles. You don't get into the lounge for free. You pay $40 a person...The perks they are providing you pay for...and the fee is once every year. You rarely get an upgrade MQM's are a scam. So, I called customer service to rebook a flight and they negated ******* of my miles. Delta and American Express have a relationship until something goes wrong. Then they don't know each other. Amex has gone down the hill. I wish another company would come along that has the same ethics they used to have.
I was an authorized user on my father's account for 14 months without ever missing a payment. As soon as he passed away they cancelled his account, leaving me with no credit card in order to run the house he left me. Despite my inheritance, they treated me like a stepchild, so I would never consider them in the future,
I hate American Express and their stupid customer service reps. They have no reason to try and help when you contact them. There is no incentive for them to assist you in any way. You owe them money, and that is all they care about. I have been paying them two times a month for many months. I wanted to get my balance paid down sooner and try to reduce the interest I am being charged. This month, however, I only paid them once and it was 5 days after they said the payment was due. They never took into consideration that I had been paying twice monthly prior to this month and way more than the minimum due. That doesn't matter to them. They don't care about that. Because I paid a couple of weeks before it was due, they did not apply it to the payment due but only to the balance. How stupid is that? What a bunch of garbage; my other credit cards don't do that. When I pay early and pay more than is due, my statements indicate "no payment due". American Express won't apply an early payment because then they can't justify charging you an exorbitant amount of interest. How do you think they make their billions? From us little guys that can't do anything about it.
They have the worse customer service with no respect to clients. I'm so disappointed of believing their words interns of all those great things that they're gonna offer and not even one of them was true. They are worse than any other ordinary Visa card and there is no customer service at all!
I received multiple gift cards from my company, had saved them to use for a special trip. When it came time to book, i tried to use the gift cards only to find all had been used already. Amex won't do anything, they tell you to contact the retailer they were used at (which they don't do anything about either). Amex needs to take responsibility for the issue/hack/inside job on their end, in my mind. This isn't just happening to a few people, it's happening in large numbers. Both of my cards i have in my possession, in unopened envelopes prior to going to use. How else would someone have the number (and a card to use at retailer locations) unless it came from a hack or directly from amex gift card? Other individuals have experienced the same issue, and a large number are around the same time as when my cards were used. This is very poor customer service and i'm shocked the large number of people having the issue and nothing is being done by amex to rectify the situation.
When i contacted amex gift card to discuss the issue and then get new cards issued, I was on hold for over 2 hours. And then the support person questioned me when I wanted a new card for $2 that remained on one card. There was supposed to be 1,000 on it, so yes, I want the 2 dollars left.
I was scammed on one of my two AmExp cards, and someone I associate with who has considerably more income than myself came to my rescue to pay off that card because AmExp didn't feel I was scammed. What did AmExp say? "Sorry, but ONLY the cardholder must pay off the balance! We don't accept payments from any other source." Who cares where the funds come from?! The balance is being paid off and AmExp shouldn't discern who is paying the AmExp bill!
I've had an amex card for 7 years. Over the years all was fine and service was okay. While all seemed well on the initial card levels, the deceptive experience I've just had this summer has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I downgraded and might stop using it completely.
I got an offer letter in the mail in July for an upgrade for the new Amex Reserve card (made with metal from an old 747, ask me for a photo of the letter as well) and the offer stated: 20,000 bonus miles + $200 statement credit if you spend $3k in the first 6 months.
Sounded like a good fair trade for the higher price card.
I followed the steps from the QR code in the letter and got the new card in the mail. On to the spending.
However...
When I called to ask about the progress, they had no record of that offer on my account, and said unless I could produce a POID code from the letter I had 4 months ago, that there was only a small 5,000 mile offer.
What the what? Was I supposed to keep a paper trail of all of this? I did take a photo of the letter, but that photo did not have the fine print code they were looking for. They said "Marketing will open a case for you and get back to you." That was October. I've called 4x since then to check on it and add further clues - how could this be, since the letter promised this promotion with my name on it?
Well I called one more time, and the lady said now the case had already been closed. No offer. Something fishy going on. No one had contacted me about it!
They said without the code, there was absolutely nothing they could do.
So they were going to just take my money for the higher card but not give me the promised bonus... that's what you get with high stakes at AMEX apparently.
I missed a card payment by one business day over Christmas. First missed AMEX payment ever. The few times I've missed payments with other cards I've gotten one grace fee and interest reversal. Not with AMEX. I called customer service and their first attempt to reverse was rejected. I told the CSR that I would her to submit a second request this time with my note that I would cancel my cards with them if they couldn't make this $29 accommodation. Again the request was rejected. Visa, MC, Discover are far more accommodating than AMEX. No wonder businesses don't want to deal with them either.
Answer: Terrible organization since it outsourced out to Malaysia
