My mom tried it too when her usual Vit C Serum ran out, and she said there was the usual tingling and tightening effect but nothing bad. And once the serum had become dark so we had to return it, because that means the Vitamin C has oxidised and become ineffective.

Not with Vitamin C but I have had painful reactions to other products, for example containing fish oils so Im careful with stuff when I use it a first time!
