There are plenty of reviews on this site about the scamming techniques of Usenet.nl
I fell into the trap but gave no credit card information with a view to trying the free download for files as i was looking for an art history publication. It DID NOT even work so i thought no more about it and did not go back onto the site. I had received no services. After a month I was bugged by a credit collection agency related to Usenet called *******@tesch-inkasso.de in Germany. Every week or fortnight they threaten me with penalties having escelated the charge 120 fold and threatening court action. My reply is to challenge them to a court appearence and expose the fraud and claim harassment damages.

Firstly, the actual usenet service was awful. The promised benefits of the service are lies. Then there is their contract. When you sign up with them they send a contract and in the fine print this tells you they will charge you on a recurring basis without ending unless you cancel following the exact process they specify.
I signed up with PayPal and so cancelled the payment agreement through that and thought that would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, a year later I received a letter from a debt collection agency seeking payment of the annual fee in 7 days or else.
I don't know whether to pay this or not. I feel helpless as this company is based in San Marino and I suspect are in that country to stay out of reach the citizens in other countries they prey on. Yet they have a local debt collector seeking payment.
Any advice on how to avoid paying this?
I have done some research on the FTC rules on this and believe that usenet.nl is in contravention of the FTC ROSCA Requirements of:
- Clear and Conspicuous disclosure of continuity
- Express informed consent before charge of renewals
- Simple way to cancel
Consent for continuity billing or so called "negative option feature" must be separate from the offer using a checkbox, signature or similar method.
When we signed up for a free offer with usenet.nl I believe the "extension" clause on the membership was not compliant with ROSCA requirements. It wasn't clear and conspicuous and wasn't separate to the offer.
If you have been stung by usenet.nl you can file a complaint with the FTC stating the non-compliance with the ROSCA requirements as outlined above: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#&panel1-1
THIS IS A HUGE SCAM. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
