DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY (if you do, buy the insurance)

Our 600 mile move with IVL was an absolute disaster from Day 1, culminating in the destruction of a $20,000 vintage wood sculptural table and damage to multiple other pieces of furniture totaling $86,000 (this was determined by a third party appraiser that my insurance broker's E&O insurance hired since he failed to bind our rental insurance) The frustrating part is that we could not have been more prepared. We packed and labeled most of the house ourselves, with every box clearly assigned to a room. We repeatedly identified our high-value items, particularly a vintage Brazilian wood table that was probably our most treasured piece of furniture. The driver, actually told me he had never encountered a household more prepared for a move and later acknowledged that our move should have been easy because of how organized we were. It was anything but. **Day 1 was a disaster.** Driver was supposed to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. He arrived around 9:15 — without a crew. Two movers arrived around 10:15 and two more around 11. It quickly became apparent that the crew was struggling with the packing. My wife, who had previously worked in corporate relocations, literally started helping them pack because it was obvious that at their pace the job was going to take more than two days. They didn't even have all the appropriate packing materials. Driver asked me to go to Home Depot to buy bubble wrap and frame boxes for the professional moving company we had hired to pack our house. Around 1 p.m., after I had bought the crew lunch, they left to "get drinks," creating another delay. I called IVL because the situation was deteriorating and severe weather was approaching. I spoke with an employee named Sean. When I expressed my concern, his response was essentially that the crew could just leave. At the end of the conversation, my wife literally asked him, "This would be a great time to tell us everything is going to be okay and you'll make up for it by kicking it into high gear... can you say that?" His response: "No." That interaction pretty accurately foreshadowed the rest of the move. Day 2 somehow got worse. We were supposed to restart at 7 a.m. to make up for the first day's delays. People didn't show up until around 8. Boxes were poorly wrapped and taped, and many ultimately arrived crushed or open. More importantly, despite our repeated warnings, our $20,000 table was inadequately protected. My wife specifically flagged the poor wrapping job and AGAIN told the crew how important and valuable the table was. They then put this delicate, sculptural vintage Brazilian wood table at the bottom of the truck and stacked other belongings above/on it essentially to the height of the truck. I have video. At approximately 4 p.m., the driver and members of the crew then got into an argument in our kitchen over pay. So while we're trying to get our family moved out of our house, the moving crew is arguing about compensation in our kitchen. Then the driver stopped loading the truck at approximately 3,500 cubic feet and told us we had reached our paid volume. This was news to me. I had specifically asked him on Day 1 whether there were other moves going on our truck and had been told no — we had the truck. After roughly a 30-minute standoff, an IVL representative, Daisja, intervened and told the driver to continue loading. The only reason this moved forward is because the driver failed to have me sign the Bill of Lading at the beginning of the move. By then it was pouring rain. The delays meant belongings were being loaded in heavy rain, and the truck was apparently packed so poorly that by the end we were given a choice: leave our outdoor furniture behind or leave multiple boxes behind. We left the outdoor furniture. I subsequently had to pay someone approximately $1,200 to drive it 600miles separately. The move finished so late that our children, who were 2 and 4 years old, weren't in bed until approximately 11 p.m., even though we had to leave early the following morning. Then the truck arrived at our new home. To be fair, the local Michigan crew was excellent — early, professional and efficient. They were a night-and-day difference from what we experienced days prior. And then we started seeing the damage. Our **$20,000 table was destroyed.** The exact piece we had repeatedly identified. The exact piece my wife had specifically warned them wasn't being adequately protected. The exact piece that had been placed at the bottom of the truck with a massive amount of our belongings stacked above/on it. A critical box containing furniture assembly hardware was also missing, leaving us unable to properly reassemble furniture. Remember: we had paid IVL to provide packing services. The driver said he put it in his cab and it disappeared. As we continued unpacking, we found more damage. Our 108-inch Restoration Hardware table was damaged. Then we found that a leg on a vintage chrome Milo Baughman dining table worth approximately $4,500 had been significantly bent. That table had also been transported on its side with other items stacked on top of it. So this wasn't one unfortunate accident. We had multiple expensive pieces of furniture damaged during the same move, a missing box of critical hardware, belongings that couldn't fit on the truck, an additional $1,200 expense to transport what IVL left behind, crushed/open boxes, significant delays, and extensive documentation of the way our belongings had been handled. I had video. I had witnesses. I had contemporaneous emails. I even recorded the driver acknowledging that the handling of the table was "not industry best practices." IVL asked me to provide them with video documentation. I did. And after all of this, their proposed compensation was: $1,000. Let that sink in. Their offer didn't even cover the approximately $1,200 I had to spend transporting the furniture they couldn't fit on their truck. They also charged me $500 for "moving blankets" which I begrudgingly paid so I could have a clear conscience to write this review. I actually emailed IVL asking how they had arrived at $1,000 and pointing out that they had requested my video evidence but apparently had not even reviewed it before making the offer. There are occasionally unavoidable accidents during a move. I understand that. If one piece of furniture had been damaged despite being professionally packed and carefully handled, I wouldn't be writing this review. That is not what happened here. This was a cascading failure from the moment the crew arrived: late and incomplete staffing, inadequate supplies, inexperienced packing, delays, employees arguing in our home, a dispute over truck capacity in the middle of loading, furniture left behind, belongings loaded in heavy rain, valuable furniture inadequately protected despite repeated warnings, multiple damaged pieces, missing hardware, and then a claims process that added insult to injury. The most remarkable part is that we did almost everything possible to make this move easy for them. The driver himself told us so. We were organized. We labeled everything. We identified our valuable belongings. We repeatedly warned them about the Scapinelli table. My wife even stepped in and helped their crew pack. And somehow IVL still managed to turn the move into a disaster. I would never use International Van Lines again. I would never recommend them. And based on our experience, I would strongly caution anyone with valuable or irreplaceable belongings against entrusting those belongings to this company. If you somehow don't take my advice: buy the insurance or make sure your renters or homeowners insurance covers moving damage. I have retained the emails, photographs, videos and other documentation supporting what I've written here.
